You can choose to have Sigurd fight his best friend, Eldigan, in FE4. It's a really bad idea to try to fight him because his Holy Weapon is extremely powerful and can easily one shot anyone in your army at that point.
Pic related isn't Sigurd's best friend, but he is an ally and kills Sigurd in one of the greatest vidya betrayals of all time. He also NTRs Sigurd out of his wife, Deirdre.

It seems like he always had issues with pride, and the duel definitively showed him for the first time in his life that someone was better than he was.
Guts didn't have a bigger army, royal favor, better weapons, or anything else Griffith could use as an excuse. He simply surpassed him. Griffith saw himself as a conqueror foremost, so it probably broke something inside at that moment that lead to him doing whatever he could to feel powerful. He fell to the depths of malice, spite, and jealousy because he couldn't respect that others could be his equal. That they could work hard and eventually match him. That's why he used the Behelit: he took a shortcut to power at the expense of others, which really, is what he'd been doing all along.
He's sympathetic, but deep down disgusting. But how a person feels about Griffith is largely going to depend on their own struggles, which makes him an absolutely phenomenal antagonist.
