This is simplistic and bordering on lazy writing, it's not necessarily bad depending on the atmosphere and style the story is going for, but it absolutely shouldn't be mandatory, every story being a clear-cut black and white plotline where the protagonist is a paragon of sainthood and the antagonist is the devil's asshole uncle sounds boring as hell
