It was the black sheep. The developers got bought out by Vivendi Universal and made some strange design choices before Vivendi just said fuck it and killed support for the game. Dumpster baby on prom night. Then Ascend came out and Tribes was good again for a while. Now it's dead for good as far as I'm concerned. Pour one out.

God I really tried with system shock II, I did, but its so goddamn clunky man and I couldn't find the hook.

I'm not saying its bad, it clearly isn't by virtue of its influence and its cultural staying power, but its like ancient technology with unknowable runes to me.

Its like Aurora for me. I feel like I'd get something truly great out of it if I could just grasp understanding.
>>
>>335699483
Hirez fucked it up although it had huge support from the community, and moved on to smite.
It's better now but the dmg is done.
>>
>>335699961
What did he do? Mechanical changes? I remember it being F2P right at the start but did he make it worse?
>>
>>335699304
Yeah OK maybe not ESSENTIAL but I thought the open-world thing was pretty well done. I enjoyed the "everyday" setting and all the interaction. The tone is ultra-adolescent, and the gunplay is mostly shit, but the exploring part is pretty good, the non-linear missions (grocery list) that you could end whenever you felt like it, the progressive difficulty level... I dunno, a lot of it just clicked with me and I think it's one of the games that got me into stuff like Deus Ex, Stalker, etc.
>>
>>335700103
I actually don't like postal 2 very much, but I admit I can't think of a FPS that created an open world with such variety.

Farcry 2 tried, and I fucking love it, but it actually just has the same 5 things in the same 10 africanish locations, it didn't make as much use out of an open FPS world as it could have. Postal 2 does it a lot better.
>>
>>335699932

The game is deceptively simple. It offers a lot of stuff to the new player but once you get behind it you notice that the game is so terribly balanced that it becomes a cakewalk after a while. It's like Deus Ex and the Dragon Sword. Shit's fucking retarded how broken it is.

As for clunkiness it's something you get used to. Thief used the same engine and it has the same feel to them.
>>
Is TekWar any good?
>>
I'm actually playing Doom for the first time lately. I've got through the first 3 episodes so far. I'm currently on E4M6 right now but so far E4 as a whole has been kicking my ass.
>>
>>335700251
I got retroactively into deus ex back in 2010 without much issue, and thief I came in from the ground floor. System shock II seems to be built in a way that is unique enough to be hard to grasp for me personally.

Its just me though, a personal failing rather than a failing of the game.
>>
>>335700298
E4 is just rough, what difficulty are you kicking around on?

God I want to play again. I just love E2, every part of it.
>>
>>335700286
Its pure shit, Shatner's horrible acting when you die is pretty funny though.
>>
>See people talking about how good Doom is
>Buy the games
>Play them
>Not even as fun as people made them out to be
I'm not even talking about graphics because there's plenty of DOS games I like playing, but holy fuck literally all you do is run around and shoot people. Even the "puzzles" are meh at best.
>>
>>335700483

I went straight in with ultra violence. The first three episodes weren't that bad because I was always given enough to get through to the end. When it came to the first few maps of E4, I was ending levels with not much at all. It took me a few tries to beat E4M1 and I had to go real slow because I couldn't find any armour anywhere.

(Thy) flesh consumed is extremely unreasonable, and you can tell it was designed after 2 years of doom being out, for people who had been playing doom for 2 years.

Its the only one you simply cannot play without using doors and entrances to duck in and out of view. People think halo invented cover, thy flesh was doing it years before and I vaguely remember it happening in wolfenstein 3d.

Good fucking luck on ultraviolins.
>>
>>335700768
The first one is a blocky saving private ryan but it remembers it wasn't just yanks fighting by themselves.

Lots of set piece scenes, not cutscenes but things like sitting on a boat sailing towards leningrad and hearing your comissars telling you that only half of you will get rifles, and the other half will get a clip of ammo to follow him up a hill lined with chainguns. Also Operation CLEARLYNOT Market garden.

2 has fat germans. Seriously. Lots of them too. Its alright.
>>
>>335700654

Controls are great, level design great, guns are all varied and useful throughout the entire game except the pistol and fist, enemies are all clearly different in order to challenge the player, soundtrack and sound overall is badass. Wolfenstein 3D showed how a good FPS should be, but Doom raised the bar tenfold. We're talking 1993 here.

And the game still holds up. It's simple, it's good.
>>
>>335698615
>people born in 98 can post here
>>
>>335700880

>People think halo invented cover, thy flesh was doing it years before and I vaguely remember it happening in wolfenstein 3d.

It's actually pretty funny, despite your running speed Doom isn't that fast paced of a game. You had to utilise cover plenty of times to not get buttfucked by chainguners and hitscan weapons, and now people are going apeshit over the new Doom.
>>
>>335701418
Yeah, especially when any monster with a hitscan weapon DOES NOT MISS IF THEY SEE YOU. modern games often give you a little breathing room.
>>
>>335700246
Agreed. Postal 2 is by no means an amazing game, it just got the whole open world thing really well. I liked Far Cry 2 a lot as well (took me some time though !) but yeah, the mission system is shitty and the "open world" is basically just corridors you drive through (except for a couple of places at the maps' extremities), but yeah the gunplay (rust, health system, stealth, and yes even malaria) was really well done (except the respawning checkpoints, the next games were much better in that regard).
IMO the perfect Far Cry game would be the gunplay / HUD / atmosphere of 2, mixed with the level design and checkpoint / outpost system of 3.
If you like Far Cry 2, you propably played Stalker, but on the off-chance you haven't I'd definitely recommend it.
>>
>>335701645
Way ahead of you, I knew there was another game series that utilized open-world FPS, I just fucking forgot stalker existed for some goddamn reason.

Farcry 2 has a lot of stuff in it to offer future games. You do feel immersed, it does look beautiful, you do enjoy gunfights. It just lets itself down so badly over the rest.

I have the same problem with shadows of mordor. I really think the nemesis system is worth pullout out of the crapsack and using again, or reinventing. There must be so many really good ideas hiding in mediocre or less-than -perfect games.

Good talk, anon.

>>335702132
I have no idea what you're saying here.
The KB-only controls work fine, and if you want you CAN turn with Mouse as well.

All in all, Doom is still a superb FPS game, and literally set the bar (quite high at that) for the genre.
>>
>>335698220
It deserves the praise it gets.
>>
>>335701958
Ha ha, yeah Stalker's great.
Haven't played Shadow of Mordor, I'm not really into the whole Fantasy thing (I really tried with Elder Scrolls, and I know it's my loss, but... not my thing) but yeah, FC2 had some great ideas, and FC3 was surprisingly good (considering Ubisoft) as well IMO.
I think it's a real a shame that for a game series that so consistently and successfully came up with new stuff on each iteration, they decided in the end to do the Ubi thing and shit out sequel-clones from now on (FC4, Primal, what-fucking-ever).
yeah, good talk man

I know you're talking about the second game, but while it is in fact a great experience for many aspects the gunplay is really weak, especially compared to many games in your list. I haven't played the new expansion yet though.

>>335701645
>>335700103
The thing with P2 is not only the free roaming but how much the game has been touched, updated and the many small details that make it a unique experience. Plus the fact there is a variety to work around the levels due the many weapons and items you're given.

Essential FPS? Not really. But I'd consider it an essential free roam tittle.

And don't get me wrong, I loved and 100% P2 (Minus the DLC as for yet), but it belongs on a different category.

Great game, but i still prefer the Allied Assault w/expansions.
>>
>>335705271
It is objectively worse.

It costs twice as much and has like a third of the original's content, and even then there are some questionable changes to the levels, like different enemy placement, different level progression, different weapons, in some cases different lighting and music, and somehow a WORSE final boss fight.

Painkiller didn't need an HD remake, it still looks pretty good.

The only good feature of Hell and Damnation is the co-op.

We have argument of exceptional quality here.
>>
>>335700062
HiRez, the company, not a guy. They got the game up to a really nice point, very nicely balanced, then SMITE came out, then Ascend got fucked up (mostly having to do with flag mechanics and speed caps, gunplay got left untouched I THINK), and then the devs completely and totally abandoned it for a few years to focus solely on SMITE. They brought out a patch fixing what they'd fucked up a few months ago, but it'll never be as popular as it was.

It's an FPS (duh) game where you play as someone from the FBI (Or a bodyguard?) and the first level takes place in the white house being under attack. Anyone knows the name? I remember seeing a video but Google doesn't give me shit.
