No, they were some guys who wanted to make a game that's like one of their favorite games. They also wanted to be innovative, creative, and make it fun and challenging. They also knew some of the most basic things about why games are good.
Modern AAA games and Modern Indies are garbage because while AAA games know how to make good vidya, they don't because they want to make money efficiently. Modern Indies often don't know how to make good vidya, so they don't.. That, or they just want money.
