BG, IWD, NWN, PS:T, ToEE and other D&D related games thread.

>this neverending cascade of slashfiction is still unironically propped up as an example of a well designed video game
>>
>>335641651
don't make this thread so often, you'll just wear out all discussion
>>
>>335643670
Usual OP here, I try not making more than 3-4 threads a week, but then often times someone else makes the thread(like this one). I guess it kinda caught on and now we have regulars.

We could try moving it to /vg/, but I really doubt it would live long.
>>
>>335644296
/vg/ would be dead as hell + tripfags and general /vg/ autism
At least on /v/ the thread will have new blood from time to time. Ideally I'd like general CRPG threads from time to time but those always die because they're unfocused
>>
>>335644668
Yeah, BG and NWN is what keeps the threads alive. And some D&D shitposts here and there.
Personally I don't mind if people discuss other RPGs too, like D:OS, but don't want to put so many games in the title as then we're really become something like a /vg/ thread. If someone brings up one of the other games occasionally, that should be fine.
>>
>>335641651
Damn... I forgot how many dialogue options you got while talking to the other incarnations. I know they're all questions, but damn...
>>
Honestly I can't believe people still enjoy D and D gameplay. It's boring as shit.
>>
>>335645345
Not much worse than most other RPGs.
Like every jRPG is just the same menu based combat, still people play hundreds of them.

The main thing about these games is the world, characters, story. Forgotten Realms is especially rich in lore thanks to tons of books being written about it, so it's a very well made world.

I think these threads will die off soon then come back when a big name CRPG comes out again like Tranny or DivOS2. These threads always get sidetracked anyways and talk about modern RPGs and I don't think an RPG general would be focused enough for a general to work. Maybe if NWN was considered /vr/ and there was a community working on modules like Doom I could see something like that happening but BG2 already straddles the line of "not retro"
>>
>>335645546
nigger JRPGs do try to innovate, most Final Fantasy games differ in gameplay and Xenoblade Chronicles had a sword that could see the future and change the present accordingly.

Not to mention that Fire Emblem alone trumps every WRPG turn based system.

Expeditions Conquistador was the only good WRPG since Bloodlines.
>>
>>335645546
Traditional JRPGs are just wizardry clones anyways
>>
>>335646589
I don't know about other Wizardry games as I only played 8, but there is almost no similarity to jRPGs.
>>
>>335645345
DND is only fun in tabletop format, with your friends
>>
>>335646456
Silent Storm, X-COM, DivOS, and ToEE all have better turn based combat than any JRPG sorry m8
>>
>>335646834
Also VtM:B's mechanics are all mediocre and the game is heavily carried by its characters and voice acting (not counting random civilians or cops voiced by devs) .
>>
>>335646834
>X-COM

sure, if you like rolling the dice. ToEE is completely broken like all Troika games, DivOS is middle of the road tier game and Silent Storm is pretty great due to its TECHNOLOGY.
>>
>>335646684
True. I like the idea, but I prefer games like Divinity Original Sin to PoE. Micromanaging pauses and retarded AI running through traps does not good gameplay make.

I think that striving to achieve "retro 90's" games without being aware of the flaws (graphics, text walls, clunky UI, and combat) only creates a polarized fanbase.
>>
>>335647076
It's carried primarily for its number of perspectives and routing. Age of Decadence mimics that well enough for an indie.
>>
>>335647180
I'm excited for Divinity Original Sin 2. They sound like they've learned from their mistakes, which is obvious in the Enhanced Edition.

I didn't care for Path of Exiles clunky outdated combat system.

Yeap, too bad half of neo-/v/ didn't even finish the free demo; anyway enjoy the rant:

>text walls
So this is a fault now?
>>
>>335647791
Literacy requirements and lack of handholding are archaic design flaws. Quest markers should be in every RPG it's 2016
>>
>>335647791
I think it can be distracting and difficult to follow depending on the context.

When a majority of gameplay is spent between reading (imo)excessive text, bookmarked by difficult to follow combat, I tend to get lose my desire to continue.

Text can be fine, but to me, it's important to pick out the nuggets of important plot vs flavor text.

My example in POE would be the ability to read peoples souls. I found it dull and unengaging when very little tied into the plot.
>>
>>335648337
Read more slowly, understand that what you are reading is to be enjoyed, not skipped, unless you don't like they way it's written.
>>
>>335648337
PoE suffered from heavy (uninteresting) exposition and terrible backer NPCs. I don't mind lots of good dialogue.
>>
>>335647405
I hope they fix the shit itemization
>>
>>335647736
I think they missed a big opportunity not making the game feel more late Roman. Late Roman soldiers look baller.

Why did BG sell over 5 million copies then? Surely some of those people had fun.
>>
>>335651314
None of those people had fun, they just thought they had fun
It's all a clever ploy, people are playing MUDs today because they're "having fun".
