I'm certain the reason why he sided with the Dragons was because he defied Gwyn's extension of the Age of Fire. Instead of the world constantly shifting between light and dark, perhaps he wanted to see a return to the age of grey, and thus sided with the dragons instead.
After all, a constant age of grey seems to be better for this universe rather than the shifting ages of Fire and Dark. It makes sense that he would choose this path, for he probably saw the power that the dragons held and how everlasting it was, unlike the flame that constantly needs to be rekindled.
