There is a demo on JP PSN if you're curious about playing the game at all, it really lets you know what you're in for, because when I played the demo I was like "Yeah this was unplayable, perhaps it was just the demo". Felt the same way back when I read it. The stand stuff eventually gets better, but the series never moves away from it. Honestly I found 3-5 to be pretty tedious. 6 was better in the sense that just about every fight was plot relevant.
Part 7 and 8 completely reimagine the series from scratch and make parts 1-6 feel like a rough draft. If you get burned out on the stand-of-the-week slog just skip ahead to those. Part 7 is also the closest you'll get to having the ripple back too.

Some people seem to feel like it's weird but I thought it was fine. Stands do get off to a rough start though, early on Araki was clearly still trying to figure out how exactly they worked so you get a lot of things like Stnads shrinking or being able to go through walls that Stands can't do later on because Araki decided that kind of thing should be a Stands ability, not something it naturally does. The early Stands are also pretty bland, later on you get a wide variety of designs and abilities, but in Part 3 you get the Stand that punches things, the Stand that burns things, the Stand with a sword and so on.
Stands are still far better than Hamon though, this is all more a problem with Part 3 than it is Stands.

Well that's because they were never fighting human opponents for the most part.
Jonathan was the only one that was unwilling to kill humans, as Speedwagon commented, he could have easily killed them, but didn't and he realized he was a true gentleman.
After that, Jospeh seemed more then willing to kill or at the very least maim people. He shot a tommy gun into a bar full of people.
Josuke never did kill anyone, but that doesn't mean he wasn't willing to do it. While Kira's father was technically already dead, he did still steer Kira's air bomb right to him.
Giorno's lack of killing wasn't because he wasn't willing, but more that he just wasn't part of the fight, or was taken out of it. He's got 5 kills, each of them were messed up.
Anyway, the point was that Johnathan is the only "Moralfag". The others may have been righteous, but they weren't going to fret about someone dying in a fight, or go out of their way to ensure that the people they were fighting against lived. If they died, they died and if they were just unconscious, then they were left.

I have no problem with that, the source material does that all the time. You determine the pace when you read something so it largely goes unnoticed.
When you watch something, the production studio dictates the pace. For people like me that don't watch a lot of anime and therefore aren't desensitized to anime's huge array of flaws and shortcomings, it's super fucking tedious and awkward to watch something stretch out for that long. Especially since David tends to treat the manga as a storyboard and doesn't restructure things to better suit an animated format.

The very first part, and even the second to some degree, are a setup of sorts for following content. The first feels very classic, with a clear good guy/bad guy dynamic. It makes me feel like I'm literally reading the Japanese version of a western comic. Later ones really move into their own.

2 is the most overrated part, I like it, but it 0's nothing without Joseph. The Pillar Men are the worst antagonists, Wham being the only decent one and he's just a generic "muh honor" warrior, Caesar and Lisa Lisa might have been okay but they never get their time to shine, Stroheim was great but also didn't get enough time and the rest of the supporting crew was shit, except for Speedwagon who already had all his best bits in PB. Joseph's trickery is overrated, most of the time he just runs a rope under the arena and the says he planned everything as he pulls it up and infuses it with Hamon, which doesn't overstay its welcome so it's still entertaining and he does oher clever things like with the grenade, but it's still not as good as when Jolyne formed the moebius strip or when she slided across the water using her strings.
I like BT, but it can't compare to the second half of SO or all the great fights in VA.

This has been the case even since the Manga has been running. People think Stands are boring because it became nothing more then "my ability trumps yours", instead of actual fighting.
The problem is that they just don't realize they are reading the wrong series. They want a fighting series, like Yu Yu Hakusho, or DBZ, but while Jojo shares many aspects with those, it's more character focused and uses Stands for more then just fights, it's part of the subtle characterization that Araki likes to do.

I pirated EoH for PS3 and really enjoyed fighting with the AI on the hardest difficulty. ASB was a slug attempt of fighting game, EoH still shares some of the problems like stoping the momentum to pose. Personally, i found the cooldown and stamina management pretty neat.

I tend to ignore hamonfags. Part 2 was one of my favorite parts, but I don't see how anyone can think hamon trumps stands. Hamon is literally only useful against undead, while stands can be literally anything.
Shitty stands with shit powers can make for more entertaining arcs than OP stands. The second fight in part 8, California King Bed, is a really shitty stand, but it had one of the best fights in a while.
