Legend of Zelda and Zelda II were games before turn-based even had its heyday.
Secret of Mana was around close to their peak and during their actual peak in popularity they overshadowed a fuckton of action games
It's a style of play that allows one player to fully control a bunch of different characters instead of having them be AI controlled.

That's in actual strategy games though. Most games that use turn based aren't strategy games.
I don't completely agree with OP but just using the basic turn based gameplay with nothing new is just laziness on the part of the developers. Turn based gameplay was developed because of constraints from old consoles and computers and that's just a fact. It can be good in modern gaming but that doesn't mean it is okay to use exclusively.
I'm surprised this isn't used more in the phone/mobile market - it's perfect for them when you think about it. A turn based system is perfectly interruptible; play a turn or two on your lunch break and finish a battle when you get off work. You can even jew it up and offer only so many turns per day, pay for more turns a la gems bullshit you see in every mobile game.
