It's sad, I'm not surprised. Valve has been desperately trying to data mine personal details for a while now. They're never getting my phone number.
>>
genius idea to me. Now it locks hackers out. I really don't see any downside.

>m-muh phone number!
Please. What could they do with your phone number? Which by the way, is in the fucking white pages.
>>
>>335086668
Paying for a copy of the game is far more onerous for anyone who cares.

Also, I resent the fact I own thousands of dollars of games on my account but I am less trusted to Valve than someone with no other games and a burner sim card.

I don't really mind giving my phone number to Valve, but this borders on cringe-worthy. It's such a shallow attempt to get you to hand over your phone number instead of legitimately providing you with "better service."

You're still under the delusion you're one of Valve's customers.

The publishers are Valve's customers. You're the product being sold, the captive market tied to a DRM platform.

They don't really care about how much you paid.

Hey friend, I'm all about getting high and playing CSGO. I would just argue that competitive is way more chill due to the smaller team sizes and base level of somewhat competence. Casual is just a miserable experience all-around with all the kiddies
>>
>>335089384
VAC was caught using DNS caching and Valve claimed they were using it to detect hacks and basically went 'nothing to see here'.

And VAC is completely non-transparent and is as dodgy as fuck. It injects and executes random pieces of code onto your computer.

>>335086642
If someone at the federal level wanted your number, they could get your IP from that post. Run it against thousands of other sites and if you have ever entered your phone number for anything, for instance amazon, Bnet, YahooMail, etc... then they have it. There are probably tons of backdoors installed on your computer as well if anyone from the NSA wants any of the info off your harddrive. Windows 10 for example.

You really think it matters if Steam has your phone number?

>>335085909

>>
>>335089879
tbf hackers and smurfs weren't as prevalent then as they seem to be in csgo, also back then simply playing multiplayer games didn't have the possibility of you getting shit to sell for dosh to buy more games
>>
>>335090306

Which is kind of terrifying when you think about it.

Companies are slowly taking away powers/responsibilities the states have over the people, and there's no resistance to it.

Banks are now managing payments. The money provided by the states guaranties banking transaction, while the banks themselves have hold of citizens' ability to pay.

Identity guaranty is being taken too, in a way. Bit by bit.
>>
>owning a cellphone
>>
>>335090531
They can attach your video games habits to a phone number. They can now sell this data to somebody who can attach it to other data connected to that phone number (who you are through facebook, where you are through your phone's GPS, et cetera). It's all about offering data that a client can make a portfolio out of.

they do not ;need' to know anything I do that isn't steam related

>>
>>335091408
They aren't separate entities. All portfolios will use data from as many sources as possible. With enough data it becomes very easy to fill in the blanks by comparing you to the rest of the population. This is why things like the pregnancy prediction score exists.
>>
>>335092068

>>
>>335086297
I think it's more an attempt to get more folks on Steam Guard (thus not needing as much in the way of their already-slow customer support on stolen accounts), as well as stopping the smurf problem in CS:GO.
>>
>>335092491
i'm not saying it 'will' happen, i'm saying if we reach the point your public identity is being judged by how much of a game you played in the past, it means the countries at a point where your being labeled socially anyway, so you wouldn't be allowed a job of your own choosing anyway.
>>
>>335087606
Yea better cover them names you don't want that hacker know as 4chan to get you
>>
>>335092758
it's about data tracking the info for most likely internal use. Smurfing has fuck all to do with it, it's just like many valve 'efforts' an experiment to see who bites. they want to see if promising a 'nicer' matchmaking will make people give them the phone number, just like they try and nudge you with the store front telling you it exists before lettign you see it, adding a delay to your trades and transactions if you don't have it to try and inconvenience you to get it, etc. literally expect eventually they will do a sale where 'Steam guard' users get a higher discount if they buy whatever, than non steam guard.
>>
It's obviously to stop smurfing.

I honestly don't get why it's a thing. How is it fun to purposefully play with people at a much lower skill level than you? It's like going into a preschool and bragging about how much better at reading you are.
>>
>>335093091
I feel the phone number shit is something the modern smart-phone crowd are unknowingly fine with giving up.

Want to use this application? Sign in with your phone number! Totally secure! We totally won't use it as unique identification tracking across multiple platforms/services!
>>
It's cute how well you think you people know how datamining works
>>
>>335093276
that's exactly why they do it. the phone ends up being a central tracking point to allow them to link all your separate purchase/viewing habits together into single entities for marketing info. even if they track it via an internal Indent (like your steam id) the phone number is more valuable because it always them to track unrelated stuff you do too.

Maybe you will hesitate to call someone a nigger when anyone looking at the replay to judge you can get access to your phone number.
A shitty social experiment, and one that backfired when Blizzard attempted to do it.
Still, if I ever feel like it I can buy a burner carrier chip for 8 dollars
>>
>>335094686
It won't smurfs always exist because there will ALWAYS be people who get off on bullying people weaker than them, and those people will always seek ways to do so.

plus in games where your rank can affected by others around you and limits your que time people who are on the top end will always seek ways to practice without risk/excessive delays

I'm not some pedo that has a giant loli folder waiting to be shown to the public. The only people who are for privacy to the point where they would let safety and anti cheating measures take a back seat to it only do so because they have illegal shit to hide.
>>
>>335095112
considering people are just as massive cutns on facebook with their 'real' account that's not going to happen.

in blizzard's case it was, as usual their laziness bit them in the ass more than the idea. they tried to use account name data that had been entered 'privately' was stated as being used thus as the new public data, and that's where the blow back came. telling people identification they'd entered in some cases half a decade or more ago is now publicly viewable got them ina tizzy. noticed they don't get the same blowback when they asked you to enter a universal name with extra numbers on the back accords all blizzard games.
>>
>>335095395
you have nothing to hide but 'why' do they need that information at all? I have nothing to hide in my house that doesn't mean you can come in and see what i'm watching on tv just because I buy something from you.

>>335095905
and i'm perfectly content with using their discovery que and 'telling'' them the types of games i want so they can help show me the games they have like those I may want to buy. i do not however, 'want' them to have my phone number, because everything 'outside' what games i like, is none of their concern.
>>
>>335096150

I don't know why Valve won't add some kind of subscription service for 128 tick servers (assuming server costs are the reason they don't currently use them). It'd be a lot more helpful for the players and in turn also be better for their public image than this.
