I played Splatoon for maybe 20 minutes during the free demo periods.

Star Fox Zero's control scheme was so intuitive that even in the mandatory (yet short) initial tutorial I was already comfortably and intuitively blasting shit without even glancing at the Gamepad.

I'm 4 stages in and so far it has been relentlessly enjoyable. I know it sounds like hyperbole but so far this is the Star Fox I have dreamed of since 64 and so much more.

If you have any questions, just shoot and I'll do my best to answer.

No, I don't have Guard and I really don't care about it.

>>
>>335040131
If you have played 64 and did nt enjoy it, it's unlikely.

However try it out for free if you can. Aiming and shooting with the gyro controls is satisfying by itself. It adds a layer of enjoyment not present in traditional Star Fox.

Looks shitty, even it's gameplay. Reviews will be mediocre, you'll see. You're simply on a high because you wanted to talk about it. Sorry anon :'(

>>
>>335040206
Splatoon also uses gyroscopic aiming and is one of the few console games to do it to my knowledge, especially with a controller like the gamepad instead of something like the Wiimote or Move.

If you have played a ton of Splatoon, I would assume that Star Fox's controls would feel immediately intuitive to you through training alone, not necessarily because of the controls actually being intuitive.

In my case, I barely played Splatoon or any other gyro-based shooter.

What's the speed of the game like, compared to 64?

People keep saying it's slow but I'm not sure if that's true or just hate bandwagoning. This is probably the deciding factor in getting the game for me.
>>
>>335041335
Movespeed wise it's about the same. The boost seems like it might be marginally slower but lasts for a hell of a lot longer and you don't need to let it recharge every time you disengage it.

However it feels frenetic as fuck because aiming is blazing fast and there's a lot more enemies. And also because of the wide, "cinematic" (yes I know, buzzword) camera angles when you use the lock on.

If you want to kill and dodge everything, you'll be balls deep in the zone.
>>
>>335041839

Thanks for the insight. I'll probably be picking it up, then.
>>
>>335039085
The biggest thing that puts me off if the walker mode thing from starfox 2, how does that feel, does it become like a platformer or what?
>>

Good lord, apply your own advice.
>>
>>335040091
Why do people alway say to drink it? Why not just pour it in your ass. You will die alot quicker.
>>
>>335042112
I was skeptical as hell too.

The left stick is both movement and rotation in the same way as Metroid Prime (GC), Goldeneye or Perfect Dark (64). However the right stick also controls horizontal rotation separately, similar to splatoon. Right stick up is boost, down is hover.

Aiming and shooting is the same as on the Arwing and it's fucking good.

ZL locks you on to an enemy. You will strafe horizontally around said enemy like in, say, Devil may cry, while always facing it. However aiming is independent of that (think Metroid Prime 3).

When there are no enemies, you can use ZL to lock horizontal rotation so that you will be able to advance or retreat with the left stick, but left and right will strafe, like traditional third person shooters.

I was very skeptical because Assault on foot fucking sucks balls, but the Walker is fantastic.

Some Walker segments in interiors will allow for some Arwing use in long corridors or spacious rooms. You won't fly a lot in tight indoors, but you can use it for quick escapes or to quickly surpass obstacles you would otherwise hover past.
>>
>>335042112
Oh, and Walker during on rails sections controls exactly like the Arwing except stuck to the ground.
>>
>>335042712
Thanks for the insight, how long are the sections roughly and how often are they implemented, if you wouldn't mind adding on.

>>335042960
4 stages in, I've predominantly piloted the Arwing by far. But seriously the Walker (and even the fucking Gyrowing) are great.

I haven't used the LandMaster yet, but I hated it in 64. I feel that the reason I hated it and the on-foot in Assault was the shitty ass controls. Decoupling aiming into the gyro controls makes all three vehicles I've used so far equally enjoyable, and I think it's because regardless of yiur vehicle, you have free aiming like with 64’s Arwing.

From what I've seen now, it's special conditions because I took the higher path in the Gigarilla level and I think it was because I did everything right and got a Mission Accomplished.

Can't confirm though. I'll go replay it and see.

However one thing I'll say is that you aren't funneled through a path during your playthrough. After every stage, you can select any level you've unlocked and replay it, and then continue from the last stage you unlocked at any time.

I agree as long as I don't have to actually look down at my gamepad to do it.

>>
>>335044351
It's a strange mixture of familiarity and something new.

Movement is the same, and aiming is "the same but better". Both movement and gyro affect it, and you'll subconsciously use both at the same time.

I love SF64 3D as well and for the love of god, I would not want to miss this game now that I've played it.

In fact, I would say it's better than 64 if only because all the vehicles are fun thanks to the decoupled aiming. The reticle, unlike with the Landmaster, moves freely, and unlike with the Blue Marine, it moves fast.
>>
>>335044563

> you bought a PS3 filler machine before the PS4 came out!

Alright?
>>
>>335044346
sounds good mate, I'm hyped
>>
>>335044635
You won't need to.

When you are not using lock on camera, you will use the on screen reticle and aim relative to that.

When using the lock on camera, you can dodge/position yourself and quickly switch screens with the Minus button to open fire. It's seamless.

This also enables off-TV play. The gyro movements required for aiming are wide enough to not be oversensitive, but sensitive enough that wrist movements are enough.

This allows you to offTV or to enjoy the game fully on a TV. Your choice.

>>
Nah. Controls are fucking awful, you are so much better off using the "Only use Gyro when holding ZR" option as it makes it play a bit more like actual Starfox. Your first sign that the controls are shit is that they need to have a dedicated recalibration button.

The new lock-on camera is awful and being forced to split your attention between two screens AND deal with awkward controls sucks.

The voices are awful, none of the characters sound right at all despite them APPARENTLY getting the N64 cast. It's jarring seeing these great looking versions of characters I should like and hating them because they get everything about them wrong.
For example, they have the guy with the Luigi hat from the train level in 64, only instead of his awesome southern DANG, DETACH THE REAR VEE-HICKLE voice, he has some mincing british accent.

Dear lord the new vehicles. The chicken walker is at least decent, but the Gyrocopter is probably the most obnoxious and out of place shit I've seen in any Nintendo game since the lilypad level in Mario Sunshine.

They use All-Range Mode way too much. All-Range Mode was special in 64 because they used it so sparingly, almost always only for boss battles.

The music so far has just been bland remixes of usual Starfox music or shit that blends into the background. Assault's soundtrack was a lot of remixes as well, but they were risky and memorable, everyone fondly remembers the jazz Star Wolf theme.

The game is so bloated with unnecessary shit that bogs down the experience. Unnecessary motion controls, unnecessary vehicles, unnecessary puzzle elements. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Star Fox Guard, a game with actually sensible controls and simple execution that's actually fun.
