I think having it so that rating it either way increases a messages rating is a glorious idea. The messages that actually manage to trick people always get the most ratings, which just means they trick even more people because people assume more ratings is always a good thing.

the thing with the immersion maybe is because iam too used to play offline. I also find the ghosts distracting. Iam used to be pretty much alone in the souls worlds.
I drop helpful messages all over the place as often as I can and always applaud almost all messages I see. There is literally no reason not to do this. I have so many messages floating around that I usually get one applauded every 2-4 minutes. Really helps during boss fights.

To be honest the world feels bare without random messages everywhere. I usually read all messages I come across because OCD, sometimes they are actually useful. Never rate them or particularly care, when you are used to PC DaS hacked messages that have thousands of votes it loses meaning.
The only time so far in DaS3 that I would consider saved my ass was in the ithridyll dungeon. In that corridor thats empty but when you get halfway a few of those brand witches that insta-kill you spawn. I was walking around with like 50k souls and if I had gotten insta-killed I would have been pissed.
