Platinum Games
They're hot shit this year and every publisher wants an exclusive from them because they have million-sale brand name recognition and incredible core gamer street cred.
But anyone who ever played any of their masterpiece games (of which there are many) knows several things:

>Kamiya always shoehorns in some bullshit rails shooter segment because he likes them, and they're always tedious and overstay their welcome.
When I saw Platinum announced as the dev for SF0, the first thing through my mind was "why? What could they possibly bring to this franchise to reinvigorate it?" and my second thought was "god dammit, this game is gonna be the missile riding level in Bayonetta for 8 hours, isn't it. Am I gonna get Fox Time if I do a Barrel Roll at the last possible second? Jesus Christ"
Then I saw the chickenwalker segments and it became clear, Platinum is desperately trying to make this flight-based game into something they're comfortable developing, because they know their execution will be sub-par.
And lo, that's exactly what fucking happened.
Between this and Scalebound, Platinum is in for a very rude awakening in the form of some permanent reputational damage. Infinite Space apparently didn't teach them that they're beloved for their combat systems ALONE, and trying to "widen their scope" is a fool's errand. Kamiya and Inaba are clearly bored of churning out action games, and trying to move outside their wheelhouse, but it isn't working.
Ninendo is, of course, equally to blame for thinking that the name "Platinum" would be worth jack shit without the gameplay that it promises.
Do what you do and do it well. This game should be a lesson not only to Platinum, but to all companies considering Platinum for future projects that have nothing at all to do with what they're good at.

You have a competent dev slap a quick turnaround remake (let's be fair, Insomniac has been focused on that other game coming in July) of a beloved game that captured the heart of the original while adding some elements from later titles. It scored well.
Then you have a developer that has been shaky this gen AND last turn out a game that does nothing new and tries to recapture a spirit that was amazing 20 years ago but has been outdone dozens of times since. Nintendo itself hasn't done anything interesting with an IP sinxe Galaxy and the Wii U has had short, disappointing versions of all the beloved IP except Metroid. When the first selling point ever mentioned was "you can turn your gamepad to turn your ship" everyone should have smelled the shit.

Nothing went wrong, really. I have said that R & C was a sign of everything that needed to be done with the Starfox series to breathe new life into it. R & C's space segments (in 2, an 3 especially) are VERY Starfox influenced, right down to the barrel rolls. There should totally have been an on-foot section in the new fox game, Rob on McCloud's back providing jump boosts, maybe have Samus's Zero-Blaster which seemed to also be a sword and a whip.
That said, it seems like most reviews are still very Nintendo biased, in particular when it comes to multiplat releases the Xbro version gets generally a higher score, Sony version sometimes would get a slight boost back when multiplayer was still free, the Nintendo versions were uniformly shat upon by reviewers, usually accompanied by comments regarding other versions' faults not being fixed.
