Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights/Temple of Elemental evil and other D&D CRPGs thread.
I finished Siege of The Dragonspear today and i can say that besides a few cringy moments the story and gameplay was good enough to satisfy me. Ill give it 8/10. Minus for being Throne of Bhaal level linear and bugs. Also final boss was too easy for a powerful fiend.

Now i will jump straight into Baldurs Gate 2. Any recommended mods besides wheels of prophesy and ascension?

Since everyone is being a boring faggot and talking avout min/maxing ill throw my 2cents.

For BG and SOA pure druids are fine. Unlike the cleric they cannot play the role of a semi caster/fighter so they need to be built to be pure casters. In terms of kits all of them are good. Avengers give good spells that boost their direct offensive capabilities, totemic is a free tank that breaks the eaely game, and shapeshifter makes them into a part time fighter that quickly loses steam as the game progresses.

Druids spells are linear but are still usefull. They are good at disabling large groups and have a couple of decent spells for oh shit melee scenarios. Their bread and butter revolves around summons at mid - high level where they can shit out elementals without the dumb battle of wills shit. They also get a bug spells that is an instant win vs any spell caster in the game.

They are def a little weaker then other oure classes but they are still competant characters in the long run.

Druids are weak, but it's not like the game is impossible to beat with a substandard party. My biggest gripe is how shit summons are on low to mid levels but that's jsut a general problem of the game, rather than druids.

Also warned that shapeshifters are gutted and their werewolf and greater werewolf forms don't get the advertised stats.

Top-tier taste, friend.
Not particularly. If you're ensuring good rolls and you know how to play, -1hp for a rogue isn't much of a downside. If you're going to unlock HiPS then it becomes almost entirely irrelevant then, and even if you're not going Shadowdancer it's entirely possible to build a Princess who is essentially unhittable by halfway through the second module.
There's always ways to help if you're having trouble early on, like abusing the Ironskin ring and Belts of DR
>>
>>334927581
Use electrical traps until you get HIPS.
>>
>>334928993
So I have to keep Vico alive?
>>
>>334929289
Only in Part Two, you don't have a choice in Part One (you have to keep all your companions alive then)
You start off Pt 2 separated from your party and have to rescue them, and you can simply choose to not rescue Vico, but it fucks up the triggers for the rest of the module (because Valine is bad at coding)
>>
>>334928441
Yes fighter/mages are straight up better then every solo fighter or mage class. What is your point?

>>

If it sucks dicks better then yes.
>>
>>334931156
Yeah, I'd say that along with Rogue/Fighter/SD are the best class combinations. Ranger is probably slightly better thematically, though.

HiPS is just too good, and if you do something like spec into dual-wielding rapiers with a large SA bonus... fun times.

Im glad this thread popped up, im having a serious personal issue regarding crpg's and I wanted all of your opinions

So I used to be into crpg's as a kid, and played stuff like BG1 and PS:T on release. never beat them or got very far because I was a kid and didnt have too much computer time. Regardless, i love them and always had fond memories of the genre

Fast forward to today. I have tried over, and over, adn over, to get into a crpg and beat it. ive tried BG1 and 2, ive tried PS:T, ive tried IWD, ive even tried fringe shit thats barely a crpg like NWN2 and pillars of eternity.

Every single time, the exact same thing happens: I get a decent chunk into the game (about half way or so) and just lose all will to continue playing. I keep trying to force myself to push on, but I subconsciously stop optimizing my characters by checking the shops for upgrades or seeing if drops are better than what im already wearing, stop doing any and all side quests to the point where they build up to a unmanageable huge list and becomes overwhelming, which then completely kills my last remaining bit of will to continue playing.

Its like at some point all of the gear, side quests, micromanaging abilities in combat and dialog options get overwhelming and I just kind of get overloaded and give up. Does anyone else have this problem?

Its weird because by all means these should be games I love to play, im big on dialog and story and RPG mechanics and all that stuff, so it really boggles my mind why I cant play a crpg to completion.

Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem before? Are CRPG's just not for me? am I too casual/need to git gud/a normie? please help
>>
>>334931284
I tried 1 for a time I believe, but all I remember is very clunky controls. BG:EE looks fun, but my big issue with IE games always seems to be actually playing the game. Making the characters is great and then after two hours making a brand new party, I'm burned out for a bit.

>>334930508
>>334930879
Sounds good anons. I'll try 1, probably take a break and play BG:EE or Siege and then continue onto 2 if I like it.
>>
>>334931628
From what i remember you get plenty of items to compensate
>>
>>334931849
Only fully blood related sisters are acceptable. Imoshit is only half related.
>>
>>334931628
Naw, not really. You only really need one level of SD to get the best ability (two if you want permanent Darkvision) and sure, the lesser skillpoints from taking a few levels in Ranger or - particularly - Fighter hurts, but it's more than made up for with proficiencies, higher HD, better BAB and access to Discipline as a class skill (and bonus feats if you go Fighter)
Rogue should still be your focus but there aren't many Rogue skills you need to keep /maxed/ (Persuade, Open Lock, Disable Device, UMD and Tumble are the only ones I can really think of) - between the moderate-to-high Int you should have, you shouldn't run into too much trouble carrying over skill points between levels and making up with item bonuses.

>>334931849
Yes. What else would they be for?

Hmm so you think the fact of the matter is that ive never been a "crpg guy" from the beginning?

maybe my problem is I like the idea of the genre more than actually playing it.

The dialog in planescape torment is so fucking good, I had such a blast from my time playing (up until you kill the hag in the maze and the big green guy pops up for the first time and you end up in a mysterious desert town) it just really bums me out I dont have the drive to keep playing to see the story through to the end.

Can't decide on either fighter/mage or fighter/cleric for full BG:EE trilogy run. I realize the former is stronger because you're half god (wizard) but having armor, shitloads of bonus spell slots, and acting as the party healer is tempting. Multiclassing BTW. They are quite strong. Dorn for example is really powerful even in ToB. Sarevok is only better and slashing with greatswords.
Blackguards can become very good wizard killer with their posion. Also they can do a lifesteal spell once per day that has damage scaling to level. They still are a bit worse than fighters, but you get spells of evil clerics and mentioned abillities.

Nah. You still go mostly rogue. Rogues get mad skill points. Enough to get the skills you need and keep them maxed.
>>
I still don't get 3E. Is picking feats based on your total level or level in a class? Does it matter what you put a level into when picking feats?
>>
>>334937914
Also should I ever put feat points into skills or as a rogue should I get evasive feats.
>>
>>334937914
It's based on total level. But some classes have bonus feats on certain levels(of that class).
For example, human fighter lvl1 has 3 bonus feats, elven druid lvl1 has just 1 bonus feat.
>>
>>334937914
You gain one feat every 3 levels.
>>
>>334938297
Okay but say I have 5 levels in rogue and pick ranger on the time of getting a new feat. Can I only pick ranger feats?
>>
>>334918048
What're are your canon protagonists in the various D&D games?
>>

>>
>>334938407
Its Abdel Adrian in Baldurs Gate
http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Abdel_Adrian
Other D&D games are party based or don't have specified heroes though neverwinter nights one is thought to be a paladin.
>>
>>334938802
>abdel
f*ck off
>>
>>334937914
Everyone gets a feat every third level. Some classes, like the fighter get bonus feats on certain class levels.

For example, at level 7 a rogue doesn't get to select a feat. However, if you are a level 7 rogue 5/fighter 2, you get to pick a feat from the fighter's bonus feats list.

The every third level feats that everyone gets let you pick anything you meet the requirements for. Classes that get bonus feats tend to have smaller class-relevant selections to pick from. So, on your second fighter level you won't be able to pick spell penetration.
>>
>>334938394
I believe rangers have no class specifics feats to choose, so you're choosing from general feats.
But yes, if you want metamagic feat(for example), you should pick that 6th level as a wizard.
>>
>>334938937
Thank you that clears up a lot of things for me. I was worried I was picking levels at the wrong time.

>Although Adrian eventually escaped the grasp of Irenicus, he ended up being aided by Bodhi. Slowly, he began to fall in love with Bodhi, who had already fallen for him, with the two ending up on an adventure to stop Irenicus. Travelling with Bodhi, Abdel eventually acted on his feelings for her and the two had sex.[citation needed] However, before they were going to again consummate, Abdel transformed into the Bhaalspawn Slayer and murdered his love. After defeating Irenicus, Abdel resumed his romance with Jaheira and became embroiled in a conflict with the other Bhaalspawn.

For me it's a bit of both.

Adapting the systems for computer games made for some clunky gameplay at times, so when you're actually playing the games things might not flow as well as you'd like.

However, the upshot is that the clearly defined systems allow for complex and involved character creation and planning. I think I've spent as much time or more planning characters for NWN than I have actually playing modules think I got a touch of the 'tism.
>>
>>334940172
Well, it's not like the books are any good, so how he is portrayed is a pretty minor problem. The setting can handle one character like him, and he's been like that long enough that no one really cares anymore. Now on the other hand, from what I've read on the wiki, Cattie-Brie is inexcusable.

I want to make a character in BG1, beat the game with him and import him into BG2 but I'm not sure which class to go with. My predicament is this:
Mage is pretty weak in BG1, Fighter is the best option
In BG2 it's the reverse where the Mage becomes stronger than the Fighter
What do? This would be a non-problem if Druid wasn't so shitty in Baldur's Gate.

It's ok, but it's not that great. Mages only really become powerhouses in BG2. In BG1 their only use is utlity and buffs. I mean you can do damage with them, I guess, but most big baddies like >>334941305 will simply resist everything you do. You really have to let the frontliners do all the heavy lifting.
>>
>>334941704
Um, yes. And?
>>
>>334940821
>HOW
Haste + potions of invulnerability (if you get Held, you might as well just reload)

It's a fair bit easier if you kill the summoner before she talks to you (Aec'Letec still appears, but it takes an extra few seconds, and you should be able to kill most other people in the room before then)
>>
>>334941623
For real though, I much prefer sorcerers, if you know what your doing you'll have every spell you'll need and you get to cast so much more.
>>
>>334941721
So mages are shit because the last boss has magic resistance, right.
They will still clean up most of the encounters for the remaining 99% of the game with a single spell or two, starting from level 1.
>>
>>334941217
>>334941250
>>334941379
>>334941478
Skulltrap always does 1d6 per level with no hard limit like fireball has and due to its lower ratio you can use it effectively in combat once you will learn to aim with it well. Skulltrap > fireball > sunfire > shit > lighning bolt
>>
>>334941141
>>334941865
I hate sorcerers because I love having options.
It's also the last class I would recommend to someone who's new to the game, since you need to know every spell inside out to choose the good ones.
>>
>>334940821
I remember it as easy. I killed all the cultists around him first and it weakened him somehow.
>>
>>334941868
Lightning bolt is godlike in 2E if you learn how to use it, as it can hit an enemy multiple times if you bounce it right. You can make yourself immune to it with a minor globe of invulnerability, and then bounce it between two walls for obscene damage.
>>
>>334941952
I guess, options don't really matter when most of the spells are just fluff and you can get through 90% of the game with just fireball, cloudkill and breach
>>
>>334941865
Yes, mages are shit because in the most important encounters where every person counts they fall short if you are trying to do damage with them. That's why Dynaheir is a fucking awful Mage NPC. Invoker is a garbage Specialist Mage. OTOH Edwin is a Conjurer which is the best.
>>
>>334938407

>>
>>334941868
Skulltrap does magic damage which means you'll kill your own guys with it, and less AOE isn't better. Try again.
>>
>>334942132
That's not even true, though.

I see a lot of people talking about figher/mage multiclass here, but isn't that kinda shitty?
I obviously don't know much of D&D games but aren't arcane spells with armor a big no-no? Or do you just give up 9th level spells to use still metamagic?
