I thought Mirror Knight in DS2 was on the right track to balancing it.
When someone summons help for a boss, a boss also summons a player to come in and fight.
A NPC phantom if there's no one to be actually summoned.
I was so hyped when I realised an actual player walked through that fucker's shield, ready to ruin my day. Best part of the boss.

Dark souls 2 doubled the bosses HP for every person you summoned, and it was fucking retarded.
Some fights ended up being even harder than if you did them alone.
If you summoned for something like Fume Knight, everyone would end up doing chip damage unless they all died and left the host to chip away for 20 minutes.

It definitely does not. FUGS hits for 1,000 damage a time at 50 STR. Darksword you're looking at more like 200-300 on most enemies. Both fully upgraded, of course.

I very much have to disagree with that.
Most bosses, with I think only the exception of the Darklurker and those 3 sentries (and very maybe the flexile sentry), had absolutely no way of dealing with two or more people.
Yeah, the healthbar was bigger, but your damage output more than doubled due to only one player having aggro. Play around that aggro, and every boss was an absolute cakewalk with summons.

Piling up more HP isn't the only solution to having loads of summons. They could have made it so the boss is more aggressive/has a different moveset with more cleaving/AoE attacks if you have summons, or perhaps given the host and summons a HP penalty, or removed estus for summons like in the previous entries.
Any solution would have been better than making every boss trivial with summons.

Because the single purpose of the games is to overcome the bosses.
The games are all incredibly short.
They have absolutely no story to speak of.
Combat and character progression aren't even all that deep.
All you do in this game is find a way to progress to the next boss, and figure out a way to beat it. You learn their patterns, you strengthen your defenses to counter their strengths and strengthen your weapons to push their shit in.
You learn to beat a huge fuck off boss, feel accomplished, and move on to an even bigger challenge. Another thing to overcome.
That's how I've always seen it, though, your view may very well be different.
But that's always been the charm of the games to me.

You shouldn't be using slabs willy nilly, anon. There's only 5 per plauthrougn. Shards and chunks are fairly common end game though, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting stuff to +9. Special weapons are obviously a little diffent and require different titanite.
Can somebody please tell me where to find Crystal Soul Spears and Grear Heavy soul arrows? I have a bunch of scrolls for magic stuff but don't know who the give them to. Have I missed an important NPC somewhere? I'm fucking stumped.

I never really liked Souls bosses. I mostly play them for the exploration in a hostile environment and occasional bits of Co-op/PvP. That being said I did like the Dark Souls I DLC bosses, Nameless King, and Yhorm (solo) fights.
