Can't readmuch because I'm in uni. Usually do most of it over the summer. I agree with Nintendo's philosophy on video games. Story is only there to give rise to the gameplay. Beyond Bowser kidnapping Peach, for example, it's totally superfluous. If it's a focus of the game I know I can instantly disregard it.

the first part of the story literally describes how government scientists explore the zone
they don't bring guns for the same reason you don't bring guns to an active volcano, or a tornado - it's pointless

It's not entirely mapped out at the time the game takes place.
Actually very little of it is mapped out at all!
Also, the point of the book is that humanity doesn't understand ANY of the anomalies. They kind of learned to use some (the batteries), but they don't even really get WHY they work. They use fucking "black splatter" artifacts in jewellery, even though those are (possibly) some kind of enormously concentrated space with completely wild physical qualities - no one just understands how they work, why they work, why they are made.
The Zone in the book isn't scary because monsters will get you. It's scary because nothing makes sense.
And, well, if those are early suits they'd look more like army full protection suits, not some crazy sci-fi military soldier person apparel with energy guns.
I mean, it's a good concept for a Stalker game, or a Fallout game I guess (the rightmost dude looks like he belongs in one), it just has fuck-all with the book.
