Is there a single modern game that W. Americans are the best at?
I'm pretty sure Quake was the last game in which a W. American held the title of #1 for a short period of time. Quake is arguably one of the most skillful competitive games ever so we can give Americans an iota of credit for that, but certainly this does not apply to any other game.
Probably because white Americans have jobs and bills and families and stuff.

Are W. Americans worse because we're relatively isolated, homogeneous, and less competitive than Europeans for example? They have a larger population and countries develop rivalries with other countries.
On the other hand East Asians dominate certain games and they're not as heterogeneous as Europe so that excuse doesn't seem to fly, or it's only a partial explanation.

In dota 2, NA is just embarrassingly bad at dota. It partly has to do with how unpopular it is compared to the casual League of Legends, but even smaller competitive areas like Korea manage to put almost as good teams out.
EG was a pretty good team for a long while, thye kicked out the asian (fourth from left) for a white canadian and immediately stopped placing #1 at events. They were always pretty high, though they exploded some weeks ago after a tourney and the new canadian+brown guy in the middle left for another team (now consisting of a white canadian, an asian canadian, a brown american and 2 europeans).
The only other competitive NA team at the moment consists of 2 white american brothers and 3 europeans. Everything else is europe or china, and there's 1 good SEA team and 1 good Korean team.

Americans are mostly anglo and Germanic, and the UK and Germany aren't amazing at any competitive game either, are they?

There's a bunch of high level germans in Dota, but not that much. Most notably there's Team Liquid that got second place in the Shanghai Major recently, which sports 2 germans. However, one of these (Kuroky) is a 'new' German, so really only one german. Black^ is also a wellknown german player, but he can never find a stable team and hasn't had a lot of recent accomplishments. The best he did was running with the chinese in 2014. There's a couple of other german dota player who have been on decently well-running teams, but they haven't done anything recently.

For a long time it was considered odd to own a computer in japan. This was mostly because their phones were so advanced, and they got used to browsing the internet/mailing on their phone way before the west. Owning a PC is only for ultra-nerds. The only reason to get them is shit like touhous and porn games. They even play MMOs on their consoles.
