Shit, dry, boring-ass 'deliver this to this' content that has around 86 quests which result in 5 worthwhile trials and 1 dungeon. Where they lead up to a huge plot and betrayal which is nicely glossed over in 2 quests once the expansion comes out.
The cutscenes are fucking atrocious. There were roughly 3 which weren't just people standing around and talking to each other (which I have no idea why that needs to be a cutscene, but okay). The characters were... okay. Underused, and they introduced a woefully boring Roe-bitch with a dyke haircut that died and literally nobody cared because she didn't matter.

I don't really play for the story. I'm about six quests from heavensward and I really don't remember much about the 94 post-ARR I've gone through. Most of it was completely pointless running around and listening to ul'dah politics that meant nothing to us.

I think what hurts this games story the most is that the places you visit and 99% of NPCs don't react to events. No matter what you accomplish or who you fight, the world remains in a neutral state so everyone is on the same page.
Like, we're told "oh, ishgard is on full alert. The steps of faith are being attacked and battles are raging everywhere" but of course coerthas is the same as always and npcs are just doing nothing as usual.

I'm just wondering what it takes to be a story based game. People roll their eyes and skip over most of the plot in blade and soul and nobody bats an eye. But in FFXIV it's seen as some cardinal sin that maybe you're not too enthralled with the thousands of fetch quests from boring, uninspired NPCs sending you out to get their soldiers a fucking hot meal (this happens too many times I swear on me fucking mum).
