i want to get into fire emblem. i have both awakening and the newest one (special edition, my 3ds is hacked)
and when i went through awakening, i got up to chapter 20 or something with a dancing girl idfk. i looked at my party and most of my characters were level 20 in their second class. i read a lot about playing on high difficulty on 4chan, so i was reminded and felt weak and casual so i started over on a harder mode using the classic mode, and reset every time someone died, which was way more annoying but i guess i got better until that one where the theif guy comes i think, and its like you have to protect someone. that shit was just really hard. i dont know, whats really the best option for me? i just want to play their games, but strategy isn't my type of thing unless its disgaea. also i like this girl the most

If you're starting the series with Awakening I'd go hard casual, or normal classic.
Normal is pretty lacking I found, but hard mode having reinforcements move as they appear will screw you over, so it's a lot less tedious to do it on casual so you don't have to reset when Libra gets ganked by wyverns who just appeared and travelled half the damn screen

Seriously, if it's your first time.
Do a classic-normal run and get a feel for classes and pair ups. Pair ups are game changers in the new games.
Don't reset too much when people die, it starts a bad habit.
Awakening and the Birthright route of Fates are really there for the beginner players. That's where you really grind while getting a feel for everyone and what pair ups work and what doesn't.
But if you really want a bare bones tutorial of how to get better, i recommend you emulate 7 and then go back to Awakening. That should sort you out. The first campaign of 7 is essentially a tutorial of strategy and and the standard classes.
I usually play hard mode first now, lunatic is aight but sometimes it's just not fair and not fun at all. Lunatic+ fucking sucks too.

You should play Classic if you can, it's harder and takes longer but it gives much more satisfaction.
When playing Casual sooner or later you'll realise your units are expendable and just send them into the meat grinder, uncaring if they live or die. You have no or little connection to them.
In Classic you have to make that choice "Do I care enough about Lon'qu to spend another 30mins redoing this map? Or should I just let him have his heroic death?"
The game isn't balanced around having all the units alive and you'll be fine even if you don't recruit everyone, so you just do whatever you can. My first playthrough of Awakening I finished with about 4 casualties and never recruit Yarne or Inigo (both Panne and Olivia died before getting laid).
Play on Normal/Classic, get used to making safe decisions and keep the Enemy Range grid on. You'll be okay. Worst case scenario, just grind and/or let Robin/Corrin solo shit.
Robin can solo the entirety of Awakening and Corrin can solo 3/4 of Fates on Normal mode.

I would definitely play Awakening before Fates. Awakening is a LOT easier than Fates, to the point where most of the strongest features of Awakening got nerfed (Pair Ups) or outright gutted (Galeforce).
I've beaten BR and CQ on Normal mode and neither are all that difficult, certainly not as hard as /v/ makes them out to be (although I assume most complaints are on Hard or Lunatic mode, so take that with a grain of salt), but even Birthright is a significant step up from Awakening, the difficulty jump in the latter chapters will surprise you if you're not prepared for it.
And honestly, Awakening's story is just much better. If you're gonna learn to play, you might as well learn on a game that keeps you compelled with interesting, likeable characters. I literally put my 3DS down and stopped playing when some of the stupider plot points of Conquest came into play (Contrived scenario ontop of contrived scenario ontop of idiot ball). If I hadn't already fallen in love with the series...who knows...Plus in Awakening you can marry Lucina and get the DLC which gives her an even more complete character arc (Avoid Shepherds -> Join Shepherds -> Resists Falling in love -> Lets herself fall in love, but promises she'll leave when it's all over -> Can't take Robin's life and because of Morgan has no reason to leave. -> Happily ever after. 15/10 best game ever.
