What is the future of 2D Mario? The NSMB series is finished and Mario Maker is a level editor/builder, not a full standalone entry.
Will we ever have another sidescroller Mario game?
>>
>>334878390
I hope to God not. Super Mario 64 and Galaxy are far more fun and trump 2D Mario any day of the week. I don't understand why 2D games are still even a thing. 3D platformers should have made 2D platformers obsolete.
>>
>>334878390
>Will we ever have another sidescroller Mario game?

I'm sure we will. It prints money for nintendo, so yes they will make more. After all... nintendo's best known for rehashing...
>>
>>334878390
>The NSMB series is finished
lol ok

/v/ can bitch all they want, but the NSMB series is guaranteed money
>>
>>334878390
Hopefully never.

2D Mario belongs in the 90s. 64 and the Galaxy games thoroughly demonstrated how obsolete they are only for NAMB and 3D World to desperately try to cling to nostalgia for an outdated formula.

>I don't understand why 2D games are still even a thing. 3D platformers should have made 2D platformers obsolete.

uh... since when? 3D platformers are good but they don't fill the same niche as 2D platformers at all. Neither of them should become "obsolete"
>>
>>334879236

what the literal fuck are you even talking about?

What's wrong with sidescrolling platformers?
>>

>nintendo's best known for rehashing

You say that like it's a bad thing. Everytime someone demands Nintendo do something "different" and deviate from their tried and true formulas, they just end up going full retard trying to reinvent the wheel.

We ended up with crap like wagglan and mobile because someone decided traditional buttons were old hat. Never again.

>we will never get interesting enemies or worlds ever again
>Nintendo will continue to recycle Goombas, Koopas, Bullet Bills etc. and grass/desert/water/ice/sky/lava worlds in the same ugly plastic 3D artstyle until the end of time
>>
>>334878390
Nintendo hates making them, so enjoy NSMB rehashes until they stop selling.
>>
>The NSMB series is finished
I want to see your reaction when New Super Mario Bros. NX is announced.
>>
I won't buy any until they go back to sprites and remove wall clinging/jumping
>>
>>334879236
I had thought 3D World would reconcile the 3D and 2D platformer fans.

In any case, the jump in content from 3D Land to 3D World was surprisingly big, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were more games in its vein down the line.
>>
>>334880550
Honestly, Super Mario Maker is released already. Anyone can make their own NSMB level.

The future is grim. Nintendo is too busy trying to get 3D Mario to sell as well as 2D Mario It will never happen to give a damn. They'll shit out an obligatory NSMB every system to shut shareholders up.
>>
>>334880392
The Mario Land games had such a weird and creative aesthetic. I love it. I wish Nintendo could make Mario games like this again.
>>
In all likelihood, the future is just more bland, uninspired games with reused assets.

>>334878620
>I don't understand why 2D games are still even a thing. 3D platformers should have made 2D platformers obsolete.
Obviously they didn't.

Maybe people just prefer 2D platformers and always have. Mabye 3D platformers simply aren't as good as 2D platformers.
>>
>>334881374
You're retarded if you think SMM levels are of the quality of real Mario levels. There are so many limitations for starters that keep you from making most if not all of the official levels
>>
>>334881626
All Nintendo really has to do to have their cake and eat it too is to give the 2D games the care and love that the 3D games get while still making the 3D games they want to.
>>
>>334878390
Honestly, they just need to give it a rest for awhile.
>>
>>334878390
>What is the future of 2D Mario?
NSMBNX
If you think the 2D Mario series is dead because of Mario Maker you're an idiot.

Why do you think Mario Maker lacks so many features of 2D Mario games?
1: So they can make more 2D Marios
2: So they can shit out Super Duper Mario Maker with slightly more content
>>
>>334882217
The problem is Nintendo no longer wants to make 2D Mario. They'd rather 2D Mario fans just start buying 3D Mario, games they want to make. Why do you think they shove in 2D Mario elements in 3D Mario, in the hopes of getting it to do 2D Mario numbers?
>>
>>334883142
I know, it's a sad reality. 2D fans are pissed because the 2D games get pushed off to some C-team with no ambition or vision while the 3D fans are pissed because the 3D games try to be like the 2D games instead of their own thing like they should be.

I'm not a big fan of 3D Mario, but I'd rather Nintendo make 3D Marios like 64 and Sunshine and 2D Marios like 1, 2, and 3 than 3D Marios like 3D Land/3D World and 2D Marios like the NSMB series.

This is the reason why Mario Maker doesn't have slopes.
>>
>>334884559
Those fags still haven't added slopes?
>>

i really didnt want to have to say this but im mario irl

What I want most is single water tiles so you can have little pools of water around the level

>>334878390

They will just make a new 2D Mario somewhere down the road. Unlike Zelda and Metroid

But they just made a 2D Zelda, and it was fantastic.
>>
>>334889629

A 3D game trying to emulate the look of a 2D game is not 2D. By that logic, Metroid Other M is 2D because of side camera angles and set movement.
>>
>>334889792
You're an idiot.
>>
>>334889792
By that logic the NSMB series is 3D
>>
>>334878390
Mario Maker is the main focus 2D Mario

Following the cycle, we won't see a true 2D Mario till 2018
>>
>>334883142
I really enjoyed 3D world, and I hope they make more.
>>
>>334878620
>I don't understand why 2D games are still even a thing. 3D platformers should have made 2D platformers obsolete.
The industry thought they did for about a decade, from the advent of 3D graphics in the 1990s into the mid-'00s.

Then people realized that's fucking retarded and there's literally no reason they cannot coexist.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Super_Mario_Bros.

>While New Super Mario Bros. is seen in 2D, some of the characters and objects are 3D polygonal renderings on 2D backgrounds, resulting in a 2.5D effect that visually simulates 3D computer graphics.

2D and 3D is based on the engine being used. Not the camera angle.
>>
>>334889629

3D Models in a 2D Platfomrer is STILL a 2D Platformer anon

Top Down Zelda is considered 2D Zelda

Otherwise your talking about Zelda 2
>>
>>334883142

>Why do you think they shove in 2D Mario elements in 3D Mario, in the hopes of getting it to do 2D Mario numbers?

Uh no, they did that to recapture the original Idea Miyamoto had for "Mario, in 3D"

Nintendo always does new 3D Design every gen anon
>>
>>334878620

Not everyone agrees with you. Especially considering 2D Mario games sell 3x as much as 3D games.

And some genres like 2D Action/Platformers cannot exist in 3D. At least no one has made a 3D Action/Platformer that retains the feel of a Zelda 2 or Super Metroid.

>in before idiots that claim Metroid Prime is the same as Super Metroid
>>
I really want a 2D Mario with a completely new art style, so tired of the safe, boring NSMB shit.
>>
>>334890853

Mario Maker is pretty much guranteeing that NSMB is done

Regardless though, NSMBU is easily the best game to come out of the NSMB brand, it can sit right next to 3 and World in my book I perfer it more over 3 and equal to World, if not slightly more because World can be exploited
>>
>>334878390
>Will we ever have another sidescroller Mario game?
Why should we? Now we have players make the Mario games.
>>
>>334890957
I agree with you on NSMBU. I think if you cut a couple games out of the NSMB series, it wouldn't have the bad rap it has with all four titles.

If they do continue with NSMB games, though, it should certainly shake things up more in terms of visuals and powerups and stuff.
>>
>>334890957

>Mario Maker is pretty much guranteeing that NSMB is done
In what universe? NSMB is one of the highest selling series for Nintendo with only 3-4 games. If they continue to sell 12-20 million each, Nintendo will keep making it.

And Mario Maker is an entirely different style of game. And they can still make both and get double the sales.
>>
>>334878390
>The NSMB series is finished
Says who?
NSMBU (and Luigi U, fuck you retards its fucking NSMBU with a shorter timer and shorter levels) was barely a step up but it was something I guess. Still casual rehashed garbage but had SOME decent level design and gimmicks
