A menu simply displays commands for the player to choose from. It's quite interactive, the player has full control over what actions they choose. Arts can all be swapped out and leveled up along with skills and the player character has access to a ridiculous amount of classes, all of which can be unlocked and eventually combined in some way. There's a ridiculous level of depth to the combat in Xenoblade X. I'm not sure what game you played, but the one I played had some very flashy and often over the top animations. I can't understand how you could say they're lacking in visual feedback.
There's also a great deal more to a massive open world Role Playing Game than combat.

The combat depth consists of following a flowchart. There are many skills, sure, but only a few combinations are optimal or even useful. Once you figure out in what order you should use them, it becomes a matter of doing the same thing over and over.
Besides, you never get better than that. You reach the plateau of skill very, very fast in comparison to many other games. After that the only thing that grows is the numbers shown when attacking.
It also doesn't feel interactive at all. You click a button and watch an animation play out for a few seconds. It's nowhere near as good as actually performing any actions, like in most action RPGs. This would have been perfectly fine if there was a deeper strategy element, like that in a turn-based SRPG that makes better use of positioning, which is nearly absent in XCX.
