Damage + Length + Speed + Moveset are the most important factors and all the Katana's fail on one end or another. The best of the katana's is the washing pole but even then its not great.
But weapon classes are all over the place, there are lots of good dex/strength weapons and lots of good and bad weapons within weapon groups which makes it all a bit messy.

So far there are two fist weapons i seen, caetus and a fire variant. The caetus is pretty shit, its l2 is worthless and cant stun or have much range at all. The fire variant has a flaming double lariat as the l2 but im not sure how strong it is. The mannikin claws dropped from a npc invasion seems ok, quickstep is the l2 more range than the fists, and scales better with dex i think. Overall fist weapons are majorly weakened from the da2 days

Bad poise damage in general, very low damage. They use little stamina and you can hit quite a few times with them before running out, but your range is also abysmal.
I made a fists only character in DaS2 and had a whale of a time. The little I've experimented with the fist weapons in DaS3 (and I have most of them), I haven't been too impressed. They could do with a bit of a buff. Manikin Claws were fun to use on the odd NPC invader/armorless trash enemy, though.

2 handed mode R1 has a wide swing and what appears to be super armor. I've been invading a ton and hanging out embered to get invaded and summoning mound makers constantly. I usually win 1v1s but unless I get lucky with mobs and/or plunge attack I get my shit pushed in super hard against 2+v1. I assume most of my wins are because lolestoc. Been trying to practice parrying but unless they're mashing r1 and I get the first hit blocked I can't get the timing down.

Personally I've been smashing people with Murakumo. If they R1or parry spam or try to Uchifag stance bait the weapon art eats their lunch. Dancers Twinswords are nice too, most dickwraiths dont prepare for two elemental damage types and the moveset is nice and varied.
All else fails Farron Greatsword 2 handed L1 is usually a safe bet and its got a decent parry too.

I think Faith could really use a melee type of casted miracle. Magic has the flashsword and the greatsword, Pyromancy has GCFO which is basically best used in melee range as well as Sacred Flame.
I get that it's mostly focused on buffing, but just something melee would make it more enjoyable.

Parrying in DS3 is exactly the same as DS2, I don't know what to tell you. Actually it's worse because partial parries don't block as much damage and use much more stamina now.

lightning blade enchantment adds your spell buff in additiona lightning damage. at SL 75, i end up doing enough damage to 3-5 shot an invader with a straight sword.
it's also quite handy against most enemies in PvE, notably the invading NPC spirits.
Best armor, best Greatsword.

They've become an easy as fuck crutch now because in this game you can literally R1 stunlock an enemy to death, and due to being able to just attack non-stop their DPS is fucking higher than slower weapons. Past games would punish this behavour so people would go to other weapons and you wouldn't have a straight sword in 90% of PvP situations.

I tried them all and they are so awful that I'd not recommend a fist build for any purpose but a challenge run. If you desperately want to use your "hand" go pyro. The +10 flame is better than any fist weapon.
