Gundyr's item descriptions tell us that he was long ago bested by an unknown warrior (which is the player) which lead him to becoming Iudex and succumbed to the abyss.
After visiting dark firelink and speaking to Ludleth, it all comes together.
Ludleth was your predecessor. He linked the fire and that was his firekeeper with the eyes.
the handmaid is the same as the one in our firelink, just at different times.
Why is it dark? Well maybe following the linking of the fire there's a period of dark or some shit who knows. Or perhaps Ludleth had not yet linked the fire by the time you visit the past

The shrine was created to re-link the flame using the souls of cinder when the fire dimmed. The first fire keeper saw a world without the flame and decided to shut down the shrine. This is why fire keepers are now forbidden to have eyes.

I helped a bunch of people with this guy to rank up in the Sunlight Covenant and the main issue I notice is that people either aren't patient enough or mis-time their rolls. I think the Carthus Bloodring is super good for this fight because his combos are pretty rhythmic. Secondly this fight is going to take awhile so just accept that and don't try to rush it. For example if those light orbs are up in the air don't attack until after they shoot them it's not worth getting hit by them for 1-2 hits on the boss.

The central story of DaS was Gwyn's story. You hear a lot about his war against the dragons, his war against the chaos demons, his knights and their journeys, his fear of the flame fading, his linking of the flame. Frampt and Kaathe both don't shut up about him, Gwynevere and Gwyndolin both don't shut up about him. You spend spend more than half the game just tracing Gwyn's steps and seeing what the fuck he did and why he did it, and then you find him as a hollow husk at the end, kill him, and decide to follow in his footsteps or do the opposite.
DaS2 tried to do the same thing with Vendrick, but it was too vague and didn't have the same impact. I believe that's partly due to the writing being less focused, but also because Vendrick isn't the last boss.

I forgot to mention Bloodborne. Bloodborne is super fucking vague for so long because everything that's going on is literally beyond your character's comprehension. The story is really interesting, and some of the human characters are really interesting, but everything in the story is set in motion by these incomprehensible horrors that we can't attribute human natures to, so the story really lacks a solid human story core element to really tie everything together.
It's a bit of a shit show, but it kind of has to be due to the subject matter, and it's cool because of it.

Not necessarily. The Lords you fight haven't yet linked the fire, but are destined to. The game explicitly states that the Lothric Prince refused to become a true Lord of Cinder. The others all fucked off after that for various other reasons (other than Ludleth). Yohrm and the Watchers went mad, Aldrich fucked off because he doesn't give a fuck about being a Lord of Cinder and just wants to eat shit. Your job is to round them all up so they can be used as kindling for the flame.

Sulyvahn sucked IMO. Nameless and Gundyr were pretty good but I found Sulyvahn extremely easy to parry.

I picked pyromancer because I knew I could cast fire and dark spells for kiting and buffing. I believe I've earned every boss victory and pvp victory under my belt. Easily a favored build for me now. I highly recommend it.

Yeah SOTFS really helped flesh out Vendrick as a character, and give DS2 a far more impactful story. I really want DS3 DLC to involve more of the stuff in DS2, since the main character's circumventing of the curse has ridiculously far reaching implications for the lore.

In DS1, you don't use any soul to link the fire, you just use your own. DS3, the fire is so damn weak that you need the souls of all the lords just to link the damn thing, and even then it's unclear if that was enough.

I don't disagree that the Herald is an important character in DS2, but I don't see how you can say she's more central than Vendrick, or even Aldia.
Everything happening in DS2 is either due to something Vendrick did or something Aldia did, and every piece of major story in the game leads you towards one or the other.
Vendrick set history in motion, Aldia set your journey in motion, and the Herald was somewhat of a tool.

Because they're imitating Gwyn? The Lord of Cinder? Their souls/cinder was used to open your path to the Kiln of the First Flame, and once there you had to kill the boss to get the Lord Soul from, the original soul found in the first flame, which is the one powerful enough to link.
