Just the sense of wonderment. Every class was vastly different. Things were a lot harder. There was no dungeon finder or cross realm. So this meant you literally had to form bonds with people and that was great.
There wasn't raid finder. Which means if you didn't go out there and earn the gear and make friends. You didnt see the fun stuff and raiding was 20 man minimum. Molten core was 40 but you didn't actually need all them.
Fuck just to get geared to raid you had to do a 10 man. It was fucking hard.

Vanilla and TBC were actual MMOs. It was a world you explored. When you wanted to kill something, you walked over to it and entered the instance. There could be problems on the way. The enemies were simple things like dragons, making you feel like just one member of a gigantic faction. To kill a enemy faction leader was a big accomplishment.
Modern WoW is not an MMO. It's an online game with other people, but it's not a world. The solo content is too easy and you are considered a "hero" by the NPCs regardless. You can reach just about any corner of the map relatively easily, and normal enemies are no challenge. In vanilla WoW, even normal enemies could kill you if you weren't careful. Murlocs for example, they were a notorious meme as they often aggroed in packs. You were one man in a big big world.

Let me lay it out for you
Class halls and missions are absolutely mandatory, no exceptions. You have to do them to make your relic viable for either PvE or PvP, and they are so strikingly similar to garrison missions that gaining a troop for your class hall currently prompts the message "Garrison Follower Gained!"
On top of this, they are filled with arbitrary wait times. Getting class hall upgrades can take 14 days of real time EACH (most of them take about 7 days) of waiting before you can play the actual game

I have to make an effort to have fun though. I'm currently 13/13 mythic, which means my character is extremely well geared, and WoD gear scaling is fucked up beyond anything so my character is incredibly stronger than anyone who only does heroics.
So once a week, usually on Sundays I find a casual guild that needs a few more people for their Norma run progression and uses TS for communication. I join their group, carry their shit and have fun chatting with them on TS. These casuals are usually a lot more fun to play with, because they play to have fun. Healing them is also a lot harder because they're absolutely terrible at the game and doesn't know the concept of moving out of stuff.
I wouldn't want a group like that for my main progression, but once or twice a week for the sake of having some fun is great.

I never played on Nost but I truly do see the appeal of it. Servers used to mean something. The game used to be an MMO and you had to be social to get anywhere. You learned to make friends and used teamwork to accomplish these tasks. If you were a particularly good player (or just a healer lol) a lot of people would know your name. Your server mattered, and servers were like large communities.
CRZ, LFR, and LFG has fractured that. Players are now faceless. Theres no social stigma or repercussions for being a dick. Those people you queue with dont matter because you wont ever see them again. Your social contract begins and ends with either pugging for PvP in trade chat, or filling out an app on some guild website.

Vanilla/TBC happened during a time when the internet couldn't provide players every single answer to a game. The world was fresh, exciting and FUCKING HUGE. People played Nost so that they could experience that nostalgia with a community that craved the same thing.
The game was very rough around the edges though. Modern WoW in contrast is objectively better at almost everything the old versions tried to accomplish. Why Legion will save WoW!
1.) Outland/Northrend Melting Pot!
This is probably my single favorite prospect about this expansion; look at these new zones and the enemies. We'll be fighting the powerful Legion, and adventuring through these beautiful WOTLK/BC/Vanilla-like zones! No more adventuring in Pandaland, or in space!
Look at these places! We're finally back home! Back in the world we know and love! It's like the rebirth of Teldrassil, Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills, and Uldum (maybe?) all in one giant continent! We'll be adventuring in some of the most beautiful areas WoW has to offer.
2.) New PvP System
PvP'ers and PvE'ers rejoice! We will finally see the closest thing to a balanced World of Warcraft ever! To those who don't understand, the choice for Blizzard to seperate PvP/PvE abilities and passives will mean that we're not gonna have any more butterfly effect changes!
For example; a warlock gets a buff to Drain Soul so he can compete in PvE dps. However, warlocks were doing extremely well in PvP so far, and this Drain Soul buff will empower them more! Even though this makes PvE more balanced, the Warlock will be annihilating people in PvP!
Luckily, if a change needs to be made to PvP, it can happen without interfering with PvE. Anyone, especially in the PvP community, will understand why this is a brilliant idea. In addition, the new PvP talent tree will give more options and diversity to each different player in PvP instances!
Blizzard is also implementing a new system in which you can prestige after obtaining enough honor. These prestiges will unlock several VANITY rewards, but completely reset your PvP talent tree. This system awards players that love doing BG's for fun, and can do nothing with their honor! There is finally another reason for players that love battlegrounds to do them for fun!

3.) Artifacts
The addition of Artifact Weapons is a concept that took us all by surprise. However, this system only means more customization, and more reason to get us out into the World!
To power up your artifact, you'll have to obtain various sigils/runes throughout the new expansion. This allows for more customization options for your character, as each different sigil/rune will provide a different effect for your character/weapon/abilities. It's like a customizable talent tree for your weapon.
You can also bet that in order to obtain these runes/sigils/different weapon skins, you'll have to complete some tasks out in the world. This will finally give us a reason to get out of the city/hall to experience the world, and get rewarded for it! This gives us another thing to work for, outside of raiding or arenas/bg's.
THEORY: 4.) Production Time
One of the many reasons I believe this expansion will save WoW is the time it has spent in production. One of my theories is that WoD was nothing but a filler expansion; a mega-patch to cross us between MoP and Legion. I also believe WoD was a set up for Legion, as it offered MANY quality of life things (BG strongboxes, bag sorting, toy box; the small things add up). WoD definitely did a good job of making WoW feel a lot less outdated, and I think that's what they wanted to set up for Legion.
My theory is that Legion WILL be WoW 2. WoD was the perfect set up with the many quality of life increases, UI additions, and 2015 character models. Legion will feel a lot more modern and referbished because of WoD. I believe WoD was the "gateway" per se to legion, and that MoP/Legion will make WoW feel like 2 entirely different games.
I also think that Legion spent a lot of time in development. I believe that part of the reason for the content lacks of WoD was because of the background production of the many new features of Legion.

5.) Order Halls & Follower Missions
The new features of rder halls and the new follower missions will accomplish two tasks:
- Make your class feel more "exclusive"
- Give you a reason to head out into the world
Let me elaborate. Order Halls will be a little clubhouse for those that share your same class. This means that all the paladins can preen themselves in their little hideout, and all the druids can tell their druid puns in their secret area. We will finally feel IMPORTANT for playing a specific class. I mean, we get a freaking area SPECIFICALLY devoted to US. No one but US can come in. It's pretty cool stuff.
And the new "follower" missions? These isnt gonna be your facebook game simulator. It'll be LIKE garrison missions, and still provide that offline progression. Wake up, send your champions (the new "followers") on missions, go to work. But here's the catch; you work 9 to 5, come back home, get back on WoW, and these champions have brought you back some information on an enemy hideout they spotted while taking out an important target. Now you and your champions must team up and brave through this hideout.
Not only does this new system provide offline progression, but it will also give you ANOTHER reason to get out in the world again!
6.) New Class
This one will be pretty brief (after all, it's a no brainer). Bottom line, the new class (Demon Hunter) will potentially usher in a new crowd, or re-introduce some retired WoW vets to the game. Perhaps you tried the game and none of the classes fancied ya? Well here's another one, come check it out! Or maybe you retired back in BC, and you can remember how cool Demon Hunters were. Well, with the purchase of this new expansion, YOU can be one!
It will also provide an alternative for some existing players. Perhaps you were getting bored with the 11 other classes because you claim you've already "mastered" them? Now you can try another one!

7.) Class Identity
I touched on this earlier with Order Halls, so again, I'm gonna keep it brief. In short, we can now feel more "exclusive." With artifacts, we can now wield a weapon that NO OTHER specialization can. This is OUR weapon.
And about Order Halls? This will be OUR chunk of Azeroth. Our little clubhouse. No one else can come here besides our kind. We can finally feel more significant for playing our class.
8.) Spec Diversity
This is long overdue. Basically, spec diversity means triple dps specced classes can now feel like "new" classes for each spec. A great example would be hunter (probably the most noted).
Right now -> MM = Ranged DPS with a pet (unless you choose lone wolf)
SV = Ranged DPS with a pet
BM = Ranged DPS with a pet
They all sound pretty similar, dont they? How about after the expansion? (assuming Blizzard follows their current plans)
MM = Ranged DPS with NO pet
SV = Melee DPS with a pet
BM = Ranged DPS with a pet
This gives 2 more gameplay options to hunters. Perhaps you want to be the ranger that focuses more on his weapon than a companion? Try MM. Want to be the rugged tracker that takes inspiration from his pet, and fights up close, mimicing the pet's attacks and fighting? Try survival. How about the opposite? Maybe you want to stay in the back and command your pet, while offering ranged support to it? Try BM.

9.) A new main City
If you haven't heard, Dalaran will be the NEW main city of the expansion! Hooray! This gives the playerbase a hub, rather than just a secluded little camp that is entirely composed of you and some npcs. This will finally make the game feel more like an MMORPG than an RPG. It makes the expansion feel more populated and alive when you can go back to an area, and KNOW there will always be other heroes there (of both horde and alliance). I think it's also safe to assume that Horde will get their own section and Alliance will get theirs too, like it was in Wrath of the Lich King. This way, we have a sanctuary, but also a faction exclusive spot in our new main city; we get the best of both worlds.
10.) Emerald Dream
This one I feel is also quite obvious, so I'll keep it brief. Since we toppled the four dragons gaurding the portals in vanilla to get our rings, we've always wondered what was on the other side. Now's the time. We finally get to venture into the Emerald Dream, and help cleanse the nightmare! It's all of the glory of the Emerald Dream, compiled into ONE RAID! LFR heroes and harcore raiders alike, rejoice! We all get to experience the glory of one of the most beautiful, majestic areas in WoW.
Also, why not a zone you might ask? Well, I'm actually pretty surprised this isnt an endgame zone like Tanaan Jungle. Blizzard just sees it fit as a zone. However, I'm VERY happy it's not a leveling zone, that we'll experience once and never touch again

As much as I want one that is a upgraded III, but with a larger scale and with a more polished hero mechanics (including WoW-tier equipment management) and with more gimmick, after SCII I'd rather if they never did it.
The only way for WCIV to become a thing would be if Blizzard hired competent writers and retconned WoW into an alternative timeline and start like a decade after the events of TFT. But that'll never happen.
