Recently got a Cube from a friend. The memory card is broken, so no character unlocking for me (until I get a new one, which really, I should do right now.)
Until then I guess I could practice technical shit. I've been wavedashing around a little bit yesterday to get used to it. (I never played Melee before, but really love Smash 64, and play 4 regularly. Also had like 1000 hours in Brawl with my friends and brothers.)
So, what other stuff do I really need to practice to git gouda? I tech hits by reflex due to playing the other Smash games so much, and I guess L-cancelling works decently enough so far (that was in 64 aswell, so again, I have a head start).
Might want to add that I plan to play Jiggs. She is kinda my main in 64, and my main in 4 but she doesn't have many options there. So I feel motivated to play her well in Melee.

He was probably one of the best players back in the day.
Westballz is good, but throws aswell.
Ken isn't on the level of tech as the others but has solid fundamentals.
There are a lot of good players but nobody is on the 'god' stage of melee yet.
Scar, Chillin, Wobbles and such are good and can get there, but who knows.

You can die at 0%, or at 250%.
That's why a lot of you fighting folks think that melee is not a real fighting game.
Same can be said for SC where there is a Ring Out.
I think it actually gives more depth to the game, same as with wobbles, falcon punch, shine or a rest. Different characters have different abilities, some OP, some not.

While the RNG stuff that Peach has is bullshit, I think she is a difficult enough character to make it somewhat acceptable. She's a pretty demanding character to play, which is why you see very few new players play with, and not very many high level players play her.
Also, it can never put her at a disadvantage, it can only be advantageous to Peach as her regular turnip is still very useful and would be used just as much if it was the only one.

The Isai loss looks like he threw it on purpose. He hasn't ever lost with his Pika in about 5 years, up to that match. Also he never switches character mid match. The only reason he did was for the crowd. Also that SD was very easily recoverable at nearly every part of it. It takes time to get used to a new control scheme anyone being stubborn and totally refusing to even learn the basics is going to get left being including those top players. All it takes is someone who is dedicated to it to come by and they'll start winning, it's too good a tech.
Even just casually using it in your gameplay will improve your character greatly.

No one is going use bidou. You have to use a completely different button layout to use it(not to mention GC controller can barely do it, it's tech designed for a pro controller mostly), no one's going to sacrifice results for months just to switch to a new play style, it's only beneficial to characters with good perfect pivots and good foxtrot cancels, and no one is going to give up control of their buffered uairs and control of their momentum during aerials for this.

I like Smash 4. 2 stocks is still absolute balls though because it's hard to kill in Smash 4. 3 stocks means you don't essentially lose if you SD and you have more time to play and adapt to your opponent. 3 stock can't happen though because it's hard to get a stock off in Smash 4. Easier edgeguarding = easier ways to kill = higher stock count. I don't even mind the new ledge mechanics, I actually like them since it helps characters not get COMPLETELY invalidated by their recovery, but the PM 3.02 level recoveries, stupid hitboxes on up bs and magnet hands are ridiculous. It's so disheartening when I get a good gimp and then they just magnet to the ledge from 3 miles away.

It's not something you need to constantly do. Map Z to special and use it when it's beneficial. Your a fool to not even bother trying to use a tech that allows frame perfect actions
