>The year is 2016 A.D
>You're playing Dark Souls 3
>You're STILL not using a bow

Explain yourself, /v/. There is literally no excuse not to have some kind of bow equipped as a secondary weapon a all times. No excuse at all.
>>
I actually feel the bow is too cheap in this game. I nearly solo'd all of the bosses with the pharam bow my first playthrough.

Are there anymore godlike bows?
>>
>>334763123
Equip weight for one.

It's true though, every melee build should have a bow on backup. Even if only to pull enemies away from a group ambush.
>>
because sorcerer
>>
>>334763123
But I am, and I'm loving it, also is there a way to make the Abyss Watcher sword/dagger combo a viable build without getting the shit ganked out of me?
>>
>>334763123
But you can't even do roll attacks with that one, ew.

I love my composite bow waifu. Bowfu? Bofu? Bowifu?
>>
bows and sorcereies seem to go hand in hand since dex reduces cast time.

You get the black bow from one of the log Giants at the swamp right?

I'm using a Dragonslayer Bow +4 and it's pretty good even when using feather arrows. I mainly use it for aggro but occasionally I kill enemies with it as well.Took the Dragons out with it in Lothric Castle, which was handy.

Also this game looks really nice if you take just the right screenshot. At the Archives now and I'm enjoying this area quite a lot.

I don't really understand the point of these spooky arm things in the Archives. They never manage to kill or curse you, they seem to be there as a minor annoyance more than anything.

>>
>>334764718
They did manage to curse me when I just didn't pay attention to the meter

You can get your head waxed though and be fine anyway
>>

Got my desktop BG from Archives.

Currently getting my head kicked in by Nameless King.
>>
>>334764875
>>334764876
Yeah I did wonder what that wax pit did. I dunked my head in but didn't really know what it was supposed to do. By that point you're basically done with that part of the area as well, so it doesn't make much sense it being in the place it is. I imagine most people just roll through the spoopy hands to grab items and then roll back out. That's what I did.
>>
>can't even raise int and faith because leveling is so goddam expensive

Seriously, I've be 38 for fucking ages now.
>>
>>334765325
There are several pits, actually, since it's temporary.

I personally dunked my head in the first one, right before the room with the first books, and then they just popped open and nothing happened, so I thought it was just a spooky effect. Turns out they can curse

Also, is there a legit way to fight the Smoulder Lake Lightning Worm thing? I just shot it a bunch until it died.

I spent like 4 hours in the Cathedral before fighting the deacons because i kept killing everything and getting enough souls.

Also i was too stupid to find the shortcuts to the bonfire in the church
>>

>SL38
>Thinks leveling is expensive now

Nigga I'm SL78 and it costs me 32,000 souls to level ONCE. it's getting ridiculous but I'm at a point in the game now where you can farm 50,000 souls in 20 minutes, so it really isn't a big deal. I just lost 120,000 souls to a fucking Gargoyle who knocked me off a roof.
>>
>>334765562
yeah stand in the middle or behind it and melee it.

I think the intended way is to have the balista shoot it
>>
I can't figure the optimal starting class for a spear and bow build
>>
because i bow to no one
>>
>>334765562
There isn't really a "legit" way, since every way is gimmicky

You can just cover from the ballista behind a tree, near the Demon Ruins bonfire, and it will just do two attacks which all place him in the same position every time for you to attack
>>
>>334765562
>>Also, is there a legit way to fight the Smoulder Lake Lightning Worm thing? I just shot it a bunch until it died.
I stood behind a rock near the entrance to old demon king. The gigantic avelyn machine will shoot it to death trying to hit you
>>
>Use long bow for over half the game

>That draw time
Are the other bows any good? I used Dragonrider Bow in DaS2 but it was shit because every draw used up a third of your stamina.
>>
>>334765562
Not really, no. Your options are:

A) Shoot it with arrows/bolts
B) Stand behind it and let the ballista kill it
C) Turn off the Ballista and then fight it never

It gives an undead boneshard so it's worth doing either way.

It has a couple of bullshit AoE attacks which are virtually unavoidable if you're near it. You can fight it melee, no problem. But you gotta turn the ballista off first, otherwise you're facing a lot of frustration and bullshit deaths. It's much easier just to cheese it.

Going back to this system was retarded, it should have been a perfect parry, or no parry at all. I keep getting partial and perfects at the same time, which means i'm taking damage as if I had only partial parried the attack, but I also get the perfect parry, because the enemy gets staggered and I can riposte them. This shit is fucking retarded.

Punish me for missing the parry, not for fucking perfectly executing a parry.

>>334769719
Dunno. I just think any nerf is good, because they're just a bit strong in PvP at the moment. Meta seems to be moving into a defensive parry hornet ring direction and I hate it.

Honestly though it probably makes sense that it's worse than just getting hit from a game design standpoint, you've got risk vs reward in every other system. If you try to roll and get hit you take extra instability damage, for example. And blocking has real consequences now too. You can argue that parrying can just get you hit but honestly that's not really enough considering both other defensive options are getting hit + something else.
>>
>>334769352

>>
>>334769803
It often feels like you're taking full damage on the partial parry. You get the blocking sound, but a huge chunk of your health disappears and your stamina bar ceases to exist. A partial parry can be a death sentence, if you didn't have full stamina, paid stamina to parry, then lost stamina again due to only getting a partial, you might be at 0 stamina and unable to roll away from any follow-up hit.

I've mostly noticed this in PVE so it has nothing to do with netcode. I fought silver knights for about one hour trying to get the parry timing right and it's so fucking difficult, as well as so punishing when you whiff, I have to wonder why anyone would ever fucking want to parry in PVE.
>>

>>
>>334770163
Parrying was already the highest risk, highest reward proposition in an exchange. Did everyone forget that parrying was not always monscimmy tier? >>
>>334770629

I fucking hate this system, DkS1 had it, but it didn't feel anywhere as punishing. DkS2 did away with partials entirely(one of the few things it improved upon)

I have to agree, like I said, give me the parry or don't, but giving me a partial pretty much means im dead. Unless you have high stamina, you're always gonna get fully drained.

Personally I love parrying in PvE. Parrying is extremely satisfying because I can get a huge chunk of damage in and hit them before they get up, but if I fuck it up, it's almost always lights out.

Nah you don't even take instability and you could partial parry fucking anything in DS1 for reduced damage and increased poise, which is better than taking instability on top of normal damage and likely getting poise broken.

2 was a shit game in general and we've got monoscimmy back in 3 in the form of various bucklers and the dagger on the memesword.

Regular rolling has always been the riskiest but second easiest thing to do. Parrying is harder, for sure, but it comes with less risk than rolling. In 3 it might even be less risky than blocking, even with the stamina drain.
>>
>>334771148
>Probably dex too

Nah, brah. STR all the way. Have 40 in STR (35 really, I'm also using a Knight's ring which gives 5 levels) and only 16 DEX. Also, I switch from covenant to covenant as the mood takes me. Doesn't seem to be any reason not to, really. You can change them on the fly.
>>
>>334771183
Do you have no idea how easy it was to punish parries in DaS1? Did you not dead angle or backstab parry fishers? The timing for a parry was hard to get, and it left you open for a long time and gave your opponents a lot of ways to push your shit in: if you landed the parry, however, you dealt huge damage. Fucking definition of high risk, high reward. Are you seriously, unironically implying rolling is riskier than that? There's nothing less risky than rolling, it's literally the safest move in combat in all Souls games. For a while, DaS even had the DWGR that made mashing roll even more safe and braindead than monscimmy parry spam ever was.

>parry fishers
There's your fucking problem genius. Do what the parry kings of the world do, bait an attack and parry it. Spamming parry at every opportunity is going to get you killed, yeah. So is spamming roll at every opportunity. In fact, chain backstabs relied on you rolling immediately on wake up. The only thing that didn't get you murdered immediately was shielding. Literally all you had to do to stop dead angles was unlock. Don't forget you can also parry or roll straight out of block without losing frames. Fucking dead angling was the most punishable bullshit, even worse than parry fishing.

If you misread your opponent with anything you're going to take a backstab in DS1 PvP. Latency+immediate lock into BS animation meant that it was stupid easy to just run past the opponent and fuck him up almost no matter what he did. The poise system made that even easier. The best defence was a good offence, which is to say counter backstab fishing tactics. No one is going to deny that DS1 PvP had some dumb bullshit. DWGR was some shit, like you said. It was ridiculous, and they nerfed it. Good fucking riddance.
>>
>>334763123
Guys should i make a dex build or a sorcerer?
>>
>>334772718
Baiting opponents only worked when opponents got baited. Those "parry kings of the world" you talk about are just YouTubers who got good at reading bad players. In actual high-level play, read: not fighting randoms in Kiln, you saw a lot less parries, and you sure as fuck saw parries getting punished a lot more. It was NOT a safe move, never fucking was, unless you read your opponent like a book: in which case you could kill them in literally any other way, you'd just go for parries because it's the flashier move to style on people.

Even monscimmy users were easy pickings if they didn't bother to read their opponents before mashing L2. Against any half-decent player, monscimmy twirly bullshit was still not a safe move, though definitely safer than it had any right to be. And yes, that deserved a nerf. Parrying in general did not. Parrying is only safe against scrubs.

I think im lost guys. I just got done with the Cathedral of the Deep, its all cleared out and explored. But before I even got there I accidentally wondered into the Abyss Legion fight and explored the catacombs, defeated Skeleton Man, and ended up in pic related.

So far it seems I can continue on, or go down into the Ash lake thats on fire with the balista and the GIANT WORM.

Am I going the right way? Have I missed anything? The only lord iv killed is the legion.

Long bow or pharas?

>It was NOT a safe move
I never said it was completely safe. If you get read when you go for a parry you're going to eat a backstab. If you get read when you go for a roll you're going to eat a backstab. Reading your opponent on some level has always been vital and always will be vital, no matter if it's for a parry or a backstab or prevention of either. You can create a situation in which they have no choice but to attack, by turtling a bit behind a shield, unlock and parry the inevitable dead angle attempt. Every single part of high level PvP is mind games. Denying that parrying was part of your toolset and saying it was just for style is disingenuous. Many times it was the only option when you're out-poised and out-gunned. Reading a dash attack, or an unlock backstab punish, or an empty air swing is much easier than reading 2 or 3 steps ahead to see if your opponent is going to continue his combo or backstep or roll or parry or block or... etc etc.

Parrying in general in DS3 is almost monoscimmy level at the moment. A lot of the weapons you can parry with have almost immediate start-up on their frames, so you can mash it out on reaction to medium speed weapons in low ping environments. That's all I'm getting at.
>>
>Put 40 into INT, having piss-all for HP as a result
>Great Soul Arrow does barely more than if I was at minimum necessary to attune

What's the point? It's like From wants everyone to roll Dex Melee.

Sorry, im not being clear. What im saying is. I think I missed a path. Is there something im missing? I was thinking there was going to be a path from the Cathedral somewhere else and I looked all over and there was nothing, so I backtracked. There seems to be a part of the swamp I missed, its full of Curse Frogs.
>>
>>334767762
Can you do this with the Dark Sword and a Dex build with a Sharp gem? Kinda getting bored of my Estoc, Pharron Greatsword is fun to use but difficult to get through the game with and the wolf greatsword from the covenant is kinda hard to use properly without using Arts.
>>
>>334774024
A longbow (Any). Bows aren't primary weapons, and you mainly use them to aggro enemies away from groups or break up mobs, which means they act more like tools.
>>
>>334774157
Why would dex melee be any different? Put points into vigor you fucking retard.
>>
>>334774157
you need to wear sorcery boosting rings, dusk crown, and to upgrade your staff

great soul arrow is for harassing, great heavy soul arrow is the real damage dealer

40 int isn't enough either, stats scale to 60

Then that's a monscimmy situation and those weapons need a nerf. The act of parrying, however, does not, especially not a nerf on the level of "if you partial parry you take full damage and full stamina drain", because that's fucking stupid. It's only marginally nerfing the weapons you're talking about because they still have excellent frames, while making medium shields abso-fucking-lutely unusable to parry with unless you have literally perfect reads on your opponents. It's also making parrying shit in PVE and holy fuck I never thought I'd say "I won't bother parrying those NPC knights" because the associated risk, combined with the difficulty of execution, just isn't worth it.

As far as I know a sharp gem won't get you A scaling, so it's not as effective as using a heavy gem and running a STR build. I don't know for sure though, so it would be better to check at the blacksmith to make sure.

You don't need to read someone's parry to punish it. A mistimed parry punishes itself.

I'd actually agree that the medium shield class needs a bit of a hand. They have a lot of start up and like 2-4 or so active frames. I don't agree completely that parrying in general doesn't need a drawback though, maybe if it didn't apply to medium shields it would be a better situation.

Considering you're using a medium shield I can see where you're coming from. They're practically unusable, you're better off getting a weapon arts shield and going for stunlocking/guard breaks/shield pierce/whatever more often.

Probably best to wear a full-face helmet for now. Having helms off near bonfires crashes people running Nvidia's latest drivers unless they're on low lighting, and even then the shit resets itself sometimes even with auto detect off.
>>
>>334775114
Frames need fixed but the partial parries do not need to punish you so hard, because right now a partial parry is worse than no block at all. Parries, as they were in previous games, were fine. Excluding the monscimmy which was obviously broken, I'd be hard pressed to say parrying ever needed a nerf. It's preposterous to say it wasn't a high-risk, high-reward move. There's a reason you'd only go for it when you were 90%+ sure it would work or at least partial, because a whiffed parry was a terrible thing to have happen to you. You were gambling your ability to precisely predict your opponent's next attack against a sizeable chunk of your own health bar.

Someone who's been mostly spoiled on the neat lore bits and hasn't bought yet but is very much planning on it:

Honestly, I liked DaS2 a little more. But having said that, I liked DaS1 more than DaS as well. Haven't played Bloodborne but they're all better than DeS. So my ranking would go like this I guess:

>DaS2 > DaS3 > DaS > DeS

>>334765562
I just ran up to it and slashed the graboid it until It died. It never moved once it came out of the ground.

>>334775993
It's a continuation of Dark Souls 1's story, only set very far in the future so it can occasionally reference Dark Souls 2 aswell. It is very explicit in its relation to Dark Souls 1.

Nobody can rank the series objectively, but let's just say it's up there with Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
>>
>>334775507
>because right now a partial parry is worse than no block at all
Yes, and it probably should be, assuming we still have instability damage for sprinting/rolling and knowing that we have guard break ripostes that are easy to pull off. I already said that I'd be fine with the full damage/stamina penalty being waived on medium shields, but anything else is brain-dead easy to pull off and needs a nerf one way or another.

I think you're absolutely blowing the risk out of proportion and underplaying the overwhelming reward, especially as it stands in the current game.
>>
>>334775993
Seems that way. You do go to Anor Londo at one point, but I was hoping I might see an area from Dark Souls 2. I remember in the trailer there was a background that looked a lot like the steps leading up to the ruins of Drangleic Castle. I would have loved that.

Why were people saying pyromancy was fucked in this game? It makes most bosses a literal joke, literally because I laugh after I 5 shot them.

Sulyvahn being the biggest joke, it's like his fight was designed entirely to be perfectly countered by GCFO.

Those alligator mutated things? I threw one at it's head and it literally took over half it's health just with the initial damage and also knocked it into a fucking reposte position, I had no idea before this that you could reposte those things.

And PvP is a fucking cakewalk, 1v1 duels are a bit challenging but I get a raging boner when I invade a gank squad because I have the opportunity to end 3 lives with a single spell.
