Would you rather have UT4, completely finished right now with around as much content as UT99 and UT2004 and guaranteed fun, or would you rather have an Unreal 3 in the works where either game could be bad, decent, or great?

Or maybe a new kind of game in the Unreal universe?

Or are you a fucking casual like me and been playing UT for fifteen years and haven't finished Unreal?

CURRENTLY HOSTING UT AT 67.243.111.189

Hey /v/, since September 28th 2010, I've been hosting servers for UT99 and UT2004, and now I host Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy with JK2 maps as well.
My User Name: InspecktahDeck - Steam Group Name: Speck's Unreal /V/idya. You don’t need the steam version to play, but having steam lets you receive announcements when we play. Discussion boards are now on the group page for users to discuss the games, servers, or suggest tweaks/changes, with some other fun stuff. If you have any problems joining, please post them in the thread, or steam group.

I've played the absolute shit out of the 1st unreal, Its one of the best FPSes of all time. Despite that, I don't trust any modern developer to make an Unreal 3. Hell, they even fucked up on Unreal 2.
I'm no buisness expert, but I think that in order for UT4 to be good, they should maybe not develop 3 other fucking games at the same time.
They're relying on community support to add content for UE4, but they don't realize that modders can't create assets that can compare to developer content, unlike the old days. Modders won't churn out high quality assets even if they can make money off of it, they simply don't have the spare time that it takes.

I think this anon is right >>334748101

Except I'd rather do it for 2k4 because it's better

TF2 and Dota 2 are nowhere near as graphically complex as UT4 though.
They are both are much more cartoony (especially TF2) and don't need as complex textures or models.
Don't get me wrong though, Im not saying creating assets for these games are easy, it never is. But we are reaching the point where even professional developers have to take large amounts of time to create content. Modders can no longer keep up.

Downloaded UT4 today. Was pleasantly surprised. They still have a lot of work to do in terms of content but the game runs REALLY well, the load times are super quick and the gameplay is pretty good.

The problem I see though is that the game will be stuck so long in development that people will completely forget about it.

if anything we need more shills, ut2k4 is almost dead. the new game has a small playerbase despite being great and free and epic doesn't seem to want to invest in advertisement at this point. all the hype died down and at this rate it will be DoA.

i wasn't aware about how much advertisement seems to matter until i saw all those empty servers.

Since Unreal Engine 2.0 is vert-, it means the top and bottom are trimmed off and the sides stay the same, having even less viewing space than 4:3. Usually people would try to convince you that it isn't a problem if you just increase the FOV to 100, but you are just lessening the tube vision, it doesn't fix the fact that your gun is lowered off screen and you are missing top and bottom peripherals. What you are supposed to do is set your FOV to 90 (standard Quake angle), then let the game engine use hor+ to scale it accordingly so you end up with 106.26 when playing in 16:9.

The hud is also stretched, so your crosshair is probably an oval which may bother some people. This unfortunately applies to a lot of other Unreal Engine games unless they specifically fixed it, like Killing Floor.

Huh, interesting.

I always thought the top and bottom seemed kind of clipped, but never noticed the lowered gun bit due to playing with centered guns so they always look kind of wonky anyway and never really looked into the clipping issue, I figured it was just an oddity of the engine (having a lot less experience with Unreal than with id tech and its Valve offspring).

Thanks for posting that guide, then!

Because your frame rate is uncapped and it's using all of its power to push as hard as possible. Meanwhile a 980 Ti is good enough that it only needs some of its power to reach 60 fps or whatever your refresh rate is.

I want a return to the actual "tournament" aspect, where you have a team, sponsors, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a twitch shooter guy through and through, but it would be neat if they touched on that aspect more, where you're the captain of a team in a tournament and have to navigate hurdles like funding, sponsors, trading team members, that sort of thing. Maybe deal with corrupt judges and shit.

As for the actual game, I want hitsounds and lots of wacky crazy player models, not just variations of SPESS GRUNT

If you're REALLY lucky, they'll be a cosmetic you can unlock, because character AND gun customization s in this game.

But if epic hasn't thought of that, get on the forums and ask someone to make a "glowing skaarj eyes" cosmetic and put it on the market placw for a free download.
>>
>>334760769

That's strange.

Krall sucked. The one player on ut3 that used them was a guy named "Godzilla".

For some reason my mouse is screwy as all hell in UT2004.

The sensitivity is all over the place whenever it starts up a map, though going into a few menus and back usually fixes it. At first I thought it might be some fucked up acceleration setting, but changing that seems to have no effect.

Might be a defect with the gog version I guess?

>>334760773
I wouldn't mind if they just went with the UT99 style thing of referring to the tournament around you. Just so long as they don't do that stupid shit from UT3 again.

Source is a toaster engine, I think we can all agree to that. The only way to make Source crank up your GPU is for you to play Dota or CSGO uncapped upward to 300-400 fps. Generally speaking, seeing your GPU do work is a positive sight, and in your case it's with a very new, advanced engine. The time when you should be concerned with CPU or GPU usage is when it's mysterious and unjustified.

I wouldnt say it's any more or less fair than something like Quake.
It's just that the weapons are very hard to use so even seasoned players still have difficulty getting kills.

This game has more atmosphere than any other game ever made, only thing that came close was Metroid Prime.

>>334761694
that can ONLY happen if they don't lose that atmospheric feel of isolation that Unreal managed to grasp so well. Part of the reason was the fact that not once during the game you hear a single human speaking, the closest thing to it was your trusty translator's Beep

I can't see that happening nowdays. Consider what happened with Unreal 2 and take it to the next level.

I like the idea of a game where you play as small band of Nali warriors. You could use a small amount of tribal weapons and weapons taken from Skaarj, Krall, and Mercenaries to drive the fuckers off the planet. Maybe get help from Nali Ghosts and shit.

It could be called Unreal: Reclaim Na Pali.

It'll never happen because it's a lame fanfiction tier idea so maybe I'll draw a little comic about it.

Half life had a lot more that caught the eye when it came out. Good atmosphere works forever, but back in 1998 that cold opening was pretty cool.

The only difference between HL 1 and 2 is that HL 1 had factors that stayed good.
>>
>>334762190
Done right, bumping into small group of survivors hiding out in a cave somewhere, or one being hidden by a resistance cell and such wouldn't break things too much, but it would be essential that you're mostly on your own out there.
>>
>>334762190
>>334762841

A compromise would be nice just to make the moments of isolation that much better, and interesting to see others.

I liked how Metroid Prime 3's opening was heavy on interaction with other people and showed the greater universe at large, something no other Metroid game had done to that scale. After ten or so games of isolation, a change of pace was welcome.

Wandering around on that floating island reading all the journals about the occupation was great. The large town in the mission pack was also pretty good for that.

That kind of area could be done really well now if you drew on the AI work that's been done in open world games since then. The language barrier thing would justify sticking to relatively simplistic interactions between the player and the locals.

I was gonna say Mortal Kombat has a great deal of variety with environments, with some futuristic/techy ones mixed with modern cities and fantasy worlds. The great majority of it was chinese/kung fu themed though.

Funny how MK and UT both centered around tournaments, had Predator parodies, made fun of a ton of different things from pop culture and didn't really take themselves seriously. Until UT3's awful story and MKX losing a lot of the self-parody.

>>
Alright UT99 buffs, is the game played best with Direct3D or OpenGL? I know Half-Life works best on OpenGL.
>>
>>334766496

It's the fact that they tried to take it so seriously that made it even more laughable.

Like some character and map descriptions in UT99, UT2003/4, and Unreal Championship made reference to respawners. Like the one that said Gorge pushed someone into a pit of lava and he was still screaming when he teleported back in the room. But it was played for laughs.
>>
>>334764981
This is exactly why when the ending cutscene with the escape pod hits you everything is so absolutely brilliant
It goes for so long, and you go through so many different areas while encountering such a different number of species and aliens that at a certain point, you lose track of how long it's been since you left the wreck of the Vortex Rikers. You're just there, stranded on an alien planet, sort exploring and sort of trying to survive to eventually GTFO.
And not once during the gameplay the levels feel stretched (except maybe for a couple of underwater sections at Chizra).
>>
>>334766670
Direct3D gives me some funky mouse lag. Set the unsupported renders to show and pump some of that delicious OpenGL
>>
>>334765695
Setting a sci-fi game on a late medieval alien world with at least two groups of other aliens exploiting the natives as well as the wrecks of some human ships really gave the original massive scope for juxtaposing different styles without it being disjointed.

Something I think games have lost atmospherically since then is in the environment design, people need to get comfortable with using simple geometry again where it makes sense. When people build shit the walls are mostly just flat surfaces, not festooned with a million bobbly bits to show off all their static mesh work. Even on a high tech ship most of the walls are just going to be paneling.

>>334766046
Throw in the fudges used for flanking/squad tactics and cover usage from some later games to supplement the AI of the Disciplined Soldier enemy types and you'd be pretty much golden for pawn AI even in a modern game.

You're probably seeing Dark Souls shit on /v/, but honestly it has some of the greatest atmospheres in all of vidya. It's a balance between creepy, solemn, and comfy. Even the earlier games pull this off despite their mediocre graphics.
Other games I can think of are
>sonic generations
Even though you're speeding through most of the game, if you stop and look, it actually is filled to the brim with detail. It helps if you've played the older games though.
>Bioshock
It has one of the best intro sections in vidya even though it's pretty scripted. I also love the style they went with.

lots of levels that feel like they're from a dream, the music adds to the atmosphere too.

So whatever happened to UT2003?

It seems as if people only talk about UT99 and UT2004.
>>
>>334774209

I'd say shell out ten bucks to order a copy then, I'm surprised they're so cheap online.
>>
Is there any concept art out there for older UT weapons, like the ones from 2K4?
>>
>>334774379

UT2004 IS UT2003. It's just updated.
>>
>>334774379
UT2k4 is literally 2k3 with a bunch of extra stuff added to it

Apparently UT99 has Linux support

tfw I miss the chalk-white Necris with the weird liverspot freckles. I hate how UT3 just made them pale borg wannabes. UT4 necris are an improvement on that at least, but still. Also UT99 Freylis is my waifu. Remake when?
>>
Does the steam version include the mega pack and Epic's semi-official map packs?

N prob, gonna add this to the guides page.

>>334775117

I'm not sure about the CBP, but I think it has the mega pack content.

>>334774943

The UT4 Necris bore me. They all look like tacticool Quan Chi, and look too "assimilated" rather than just being reanimated killers and assassins.
>>
Ut 99 had the best console command ever
>addbots
I don't remember what was the limit before the game crashed but you cloud add literally hundreds of bots with that command.
Me and a friend had good times making maps specifically for the cluster fuck that created
>>
>>334775797

Having the enemies from SP/Horde mode face each other is still one of my favorite things to do in UT.

I'm not sure it wasn't really elaborated on in UT99, they were originally just an organization of professional killers like >>334775512 mentioned. The nanite reanimation thing didn't get built on about til Unreal Championship 2 but UT3 retconned that to LOL SLIGHTLY PALE HUMANS WHO DRESS UP LIKE GoW VILLAINS.
>>
>>334776230
The concept art version looks like something out of a legacy of kain game.

Speaking of games with atmospheric music.

Metroid, Unreal/UT, Soul Reaver, and a lot of the calmer/asian tracks in Mortal Kombat are top tier.

as kid I'd always spawn random shit from Unreal in UT99 maps. I'd spend time making stairs out of wooden tables that'd float or just spawn a bunch of wooden boxes and explode them all. It was like Garry's Mod years before it. Here's an old ass screenshot from some time in the early 00's.
>>
i'd rather they remade the original Unreal in UE4
>>
>>334776230
wait, found the bio I was thinking of:

>Member of an alien race known as the 'Necris', Kryss is possessed of a dark beauty. Beware, however, for it hides an even darker mind.

from when you get her as an opponent in Stalwart

it refers to the Phayder secret society as well, rather than a Phayder corporation, and implies the Necris are engaged in a presumably lukewarm war with Earth
>>
I would give my left testicle for another game like UT2004. That was the game that got me into pc gaming.

Found a collection of all the profiles from UT99 Necris here
https://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Necris_Black_Legion

yeah, it looks like they were designed as being aliens with a nebulously doomsday cult with added bondage style religion, with the phayder secret society waging a covert war against humans.
>>
>>334777754
I like the idea of just the Necris being space assassins.

I was already lost.
>>
>>334777840
That's pretty much what they were in UT99, going by the profiles

I was never a fan of them being not!zombies made by yet another corporation that's apparently at war with everyone else somehow and then also sometimes apparently Liandri got to use their stuff too even though they're at war maybe

Can't join servers with an edited XGames.
>>
>>334778225
I suspected so, I just confirmed it myself earlier. But the XGame.u is only for allowing the fix to work in single player as well. You don't need it otherwise. I just joined the server without the SP XGame.u and I was fine.
>>
>>334778307
Is the XGame portion just for the or does is that doing the fov as well?
>>
>>334777976
I fully support a return to sexy bondage alien assassins for the Necris.
