How does /v/ feel about Alien Resurrection on PS1?
IMO It's one of the most terrifying games ever and legitimately highly underrated.

even the fucking opening is disturbing as fuck.

unaware of its existance
>>
Probably one of the best PS1 fps's made. Sound design and aesthetics were superb. Controls were awful though. Only the first Dead space has come close to the level of atmosphere on a scary space ship.
>>
Dead Space wouldn't fucking exist without this masterpiece.

I tried playing it yesterday and it's STILL GOOD. Like this is the only game where I fully understand needing to take breaks on account of how terrifying and unnerving it is.

>you're never fully safe
>aliens will drop in through vents when you're AFK for more than 10 minutes.

>pixelated face huggers jumping your face
Not being able to completely make out a monsters shape is the most terrifying thing.
>>
>WILL ALL NONESSIENTIAL PERSONNEL PLEASE REPORT TO LIFEBOATS

I can't fucking play this shit man, this is the only game that actually scares me.
>>
>>334683557
pretty impressive for ps1 and nails the atmosphere alien trilogy is much better though
>>
>The absolute blind panic of burning eggs with the flamethrower before they hatch and seeing one that is already open.
>>
Legitimately scart game.
>>
>>334683557
It sure as hell outdid its source material.
>>
Damn looks like a real hidden gem. So can you emulate and play it with a mouse? Looks like he's using a mouse in the video.
>>
>>334683920
it came out after ps2 was released in fact i think it was the last game from argonaut (who also made croc)
>>334684707
it was originally supposed to come out along side the movie but was delayed a bunch and ended up having almost nothing to do with it.
>>334684718
i dont think so but it was one of the first games to do dual analog move/look controls, reviewers even complained about it.
>>
Real talk some parts of this game are virtually unplayable it gets so fucking scary

One of the only game movies that ended up bring better than the actual movie

the guys that made Colonial Marines should make "Aliens" next and use this game as reference
>>
>>334684941
Did they complain because the controls were bad, or new and unfamiliar? (This will never catch on!)
>>
This game shits on every horror game ever made.

It's practically pure terror and unnerving paranoia from start to finish.
>>
>>334685267
The latter. Which is hilarious considering how things turned out.

>>
Only game I couldn't finish purely from the insanely overwhelming atmosphere of terror.
>>
What's so scary about it?
>>
>>334685727
You're slow and alone and have next to no ammo. Your enemies are fast and are in numbers greater than the ammo you could hope to carry.

It is dark and you will never see them coming.
>>
>>334685727
I remember this game and I dunno about scary but it had some great level of tension

>get facehugged
>you don't die but you now have an alien growing in you
>must figure out how to kill it before it bursts out of you

Mind you this wasnt some plot point, it was a game mechanic that made the facehugger a terrifying enemy
>>
>you could be attacked and impregnated by an facehugger at any time.

>game had very dark lighting, minimal sound design, aliens were fast and hard to kill

It's little things like that that made this game such a huge standout horror title, it was sublime as fuck. Argonaut should still be around making games
>>
>>334683557
shit these are some impressive visuals for ps1
>>
>>334685906
>if you ignore it for too long it will start fucking bursting out if you'd chest and all you see is blood splatter on the ground after hearing your character drop to the ground screaming in agony and then alien newborn screaming as the screen fades to black

First time that happened I just shut the game off and just rocked myself in the dark
>>
>>334683557
does this hold up? might emulate
>>
>>334685727
Incredibly tense atmosphere
>>
>>334686136
>hard to kill
The player in the video in the OP killed a surprise alien so out of hand with the shotgun that he had to stare at the bloody wall for a few seconds in amazement.
>>
>>334683557
I beat it as a kid. The only thing I didn't like much was the bullet-sponginess of some bosses, mainly that "queen" with wide head, but I guess it still all worked out in the end
>>
Turns out something good came out of the existence of Alien:Resurrection after all.
>>
>>334686383
That's the best part, it's really hard to kill them that easily so the gravity of the moment hits you hard as fuck.

I've been able to time up a shotgun kill before but every time you do it ends up surprising and unnerving you.

Game is brutal and unforgiving, even when you see an alien shooting them with low damage weapons like a pistol is scary because you know it's not going to kill it and now you've just angered and alerted it to your presence.
>>
>>334686605
Why is it hard?

Is it because the controls are ass and player speed so slow that aliens are simply hard to hit? Because damage is damage and the video tells me that the shotgun can one-shot aliens. Assuming no RNG bullshit, a player with good aim should be able to consistently destroy these aliens.
>>
>>334683557
Thanks for the share. I wish I knew about this game when growing up, It would be pure nightmare fuel for me. I had a hard time with DOOM 64 but really enjoyed it regardless of my fear. Next time I visit my local disk resale store, I will look for this.

Bro fuck this game

Like I love horror games and this game is still too fucking scary for me, the atmosphere was fucking spectacularly done

>that room of staff screaming for you to let them out because of the alien coming to kill them

>the rising screams and cries getting louder and louder and more desperate are suddenly interrupted by wails of pain, splattering noises and an alien shriek before silence

>room is covered in their guts, hand on the fingerprint scanner is ripped off the arm

Prepare to shit bricks from a fucking decades old PS1 literally who alien movie tie in
>>

Well shit with that logic you could badass your way through real life too mr.navy seal sharpshooter.

The shotgun only one shots the aliens if you get them right in the head.
>>

Except AvP2, while awesome, is nothing like Resurrection. One's a claustrophobic horror game, the other is a shooter with a pretty strong focus on narrative and asymmetrical multiplayer.
I wish we could get another AvP like 2, though. 2010 was just... Ok, from a plot point. Alien and Predator campaigns could have been a bit better.

>>
>>334689636
Naw, it was pretty awesome. Made by the same guys who did AvP2 and even re-used assets. I only wish it had been released on PC instead and given multiplayer and a skirmish mode.
>>
>>334689636
That game was dope as fuck brah.
>>
It was good, preferred trilogy though
>>
>>334683557
I never got to try this, I do remember reading about people crying about how fast and hard the aliens were.

I thought we were speaking about Resurrection for a moment. One of the first games for the psx. The atmosphere there was pretty good.

This game is fucking brutal and terrifying.

If you don't save enough ammo for Ripley, in one of the later stages (6 I believe) you can actually make the game unbeatable, making you restart the entire game.

And fuck hard mode. that shit is nigger dicks.
>>
>>334683557
the slightly-off aspect ratio in this video is triggering me
>>
Didn't this game have a demo? It was fucking creepy as fucking hell
>>
I couldn't deal with this game, it was a time before dual sticks properly caught on and between all the;
>Xenomorphs crawling on the ceiling and walls
>Facehuggers which could lay a fucking egg in you forcing a desperate rush to find a portable auto-surgeon kit
>Rare ammo pick ups
The clunky aiming was just too much.

I played 007 The world is not enough instead and saved my sanity.

It's not even the best Alien game on PS1, let alone ever.
>>
>>334694638
In all fairness that was a different Colonial Marines to the one that Gearbox ended up releasing. They've tried a few times to make such a game happen.
>>
>>334694903
Why are facehugger deaths so sexual?
>>
>>334684323
>Dead Space wouldn't fucking exist without this masterpiece.

Dead Space most likely inspirations came from RE4 and Doom 3. Not this obscure game that is long forgotten.
>>
>>334695078
That's still waiting over a decade.
>>
>>334695165
They considered originally naming them face fuckers apparently.
>>
>>334695418
You know damn well that's exactly what the CMs would call them.
>>
>>334695165
Because everything about Alien was designed to play on sexual horror. The facehugger is basically a vagina on legs that orally rapes people to death. In fact, the eggs themselves were originally meant to have a single slit opening like the 'I' in the original movie's logo, but it was felt to be a little on the nose.
>>
>>334687293
Croc 1 was great but 2 was pretty awful.
Really wanted him in Sony Smash Bros though.
>>
>>334695532
>>334687293
My only memory of Croc was that they were bullshit hard and confusing.
>>
>>334695624
>>334695532
both are pretty good but they each have 1 or 2 really brutal levels which mustn't have been tested or something
>>
>>334695519
So is the Alien itself a giant BB..

..you must know where I am going with this right?
>>
>>334696094
The first Alien starts with their "birth" as they awaken from hypersleep. The movie has multiple cycles of death and rebirth, killing those who were never alive and showing the multiple stages of life of the xenomorphs, from eggs to facehuggers to the alien we know.

There are many sexual aspects to the series, from the obvious facehuggers representing anxieties of men performing oral sex/fear of pregnancy/birth, the xenomorph's phallic head as the dominant character in the movie, even down to the cream-white "blood" of Ash when he dies, and his attempts to choke his attackers with a pornographic magazine. It's surprising how deep it goes.
>>
>>334696602
As Geiger (I think it was Geiger) said in an interview about Alien and his thought process for the imagery used, "I'm going to attack them sexually".
>>
>>334696602
>his attempts to choke his attackers with a pornographic magazine

This was a great horror game, modern AAA shits take notes.
>>
I'd honestly rank this up with the top 10 horror games on Sony consoles, the atmosphere is lonely, brutal and downright horrifying.

>dat ambient sound design
>dat dark color balance
>dat mission where you are staring an alien face to face on startup.
>>
>>334694903
AR was better DESU
>>
To date this is the only game that made me straight up stop playing because i couldn't relax ever, one of the most claustrophobic environments ever.
