You'll notice how even mediocre games are fun when played with friends. That's true for virtually every game ever made. You can look to just about any multiplayer game made in the last several years for proof.

Because it was garbo alone. When you have another person to share the experience with it immediately becomes 10x more enjoyable.
That aside, I don't understand why people seem to think that "multiplayer" and "good gameplay/story" are mutually exclusive. It's just... retarded. Why would anyone come to such an illogical conclusion?
I think the point they're trying to make is that multiplayer should never come at the expense of a campaign.
Wolfenstein TNO is a good example of this. It's not the greatest story ever told or anything but it's got a very good campaign and wasn't bogged down by having to make any considerations for multiplayer.

>>334645758
They see the symptoms but not the problem. Regardless of how shitty the writing may be, the problem is that AAA is becoming Hollywood, with giant budgets for samey games that 'only' break even at 10 million sales. Everyone knows it's unsustainable but casuals have gotten too used to the business model and getting muh graphix.
The old solution was to include both SP and MP modes so that both crowds would buy. This worked because overly linear games like point and clicks were simpler and often cheaper to make than the next 3D arena shooter, so it only ended up happening where it made sense to. A few games experimented with in game billboards (Don't forget, even HL1-based games put ads in your loading screens), but most of the time it fucks with muh immersion, Now it's about cutting out as much as possible to sell as DLC later on, or at least designing your game with endless loot in mind so DLC makes sense. Sometimes it's cosmetics that you used to unlock as achievements, sometimes it's entire maps. No doubt once the big publishers figure out how to do early access without having to give up money to Valve, Microsoft, or the like, they'll force whatever franchise is next in the pipeline to follow suit.
Just watch, Mass Effect 5 or whatever the fuck it gets called is going to be an 'evolving' storyline, claiming influence from Telltale and their 'choice-based, innovative storytelling'. In reality, they're just going to kill off the chick that gets fucked the most for the shock value.

TLOU isn't a bad game at all.
Its story isn't anything special though and I'll never understand why it's the focus any time it's brought up. The gameplay did a great job of giving a sense that you're just barely getting by with your resources and that you aren't just a robotic video game character since your aim is kinda shitty and it can be pretty hard to find the enemies in the first place (as long as you don't use detective vision)

Skyrim had a great story, it was just rushed and an essential part of telling a story through a videogame, the gameplay, was lacking. It's pretty moving when you get involved with the lore, like all the stories since Morrowind. Arena was lame and Daggerfall's story was less visceral and more cerebral but Skyrim and especially Morrowind were deeply visceral and moving and made you feel like you were part of something ancient and vastly greater than yourself through the proxy of your character. Oblivion's main quest was shit but its lore was still good and the sidequests were top notch storytelling, it was just better as a collection of short stories than as a novel (metaphorically speaking).
TW3 was a pretty good game and a great story. I teared up at the end. Never played TLOU and FO4 was laughably badly written throughout though for once BGS made a game with decent action gameplay. FO4 legit could have benefited a lot from multiplayer though.

Great gameplay should be the story itself. In my opinion, games that create a complex system that lets players interact in variety of ways and have interesting events happen are the best ways to tell stories.

I wouldn't agree on Skyrim being the best example of freedom given the restrictions put on the player (essential NPCs etc). Haven't played FO4 yet but voiced character with a backstory doesn't sound good for an 'RPG'. Also wouldn't agree on needing great stories. They're nice, but I think more needed is great player agency and freedom.
My favourite game's Mount and Blade. There's fuck all story there, but the freedom to craft your own narrative is what makes it so great. No two games are the same, even if you play native. One time Rhodoks are on top, next time it could be the Vaegirs, and if you choose you can influence it all or just let it play out.
That to me is what makes games great. I can get great stories from myriad media. I can't get the same level of control or freedom anywhere else.
>>334666436
