Its by far the most accessible entry in the series. Some of the streamlining and visual upgrades may make it hard to go backwards though. Strange Journey is modern enough to be relatively accessible but is still hardcore SMT and the Soul Hackers remake is very oldschool with a fresh coat of paint

I mean, to be fair, both of those are true. Even Catherine had an excuse, because Atlus Japan redid all of the mouth flaps to match the English audio (even though it wasn't always great and even though they should've made the game so that they can swap out flap routines at any time with an audio toggle). It's mostly just Atlus USA that still has this problem, though. The data is there to support that you get more sales being dub-only vs sub-only beyond a certain niche level, but every other company that gives their games dubs also gives dual audio. Blame the anime-loving losers who suck Atlus' dick on almost all social media and who cop to buying multiple full-priced copies of the same game, just to support the USA branch.
And SMT IV's dub was mostly solid, even if the Japanese track was still better. If you want a recent Atlus dub that had some really bad parts, check out Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold's.

It's not a total wash, because some of the actors actually give the Japanese ones a run for their money, but I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to think that Atlus USA is incompetent at casting and directing and that the good performances are despite their missteps.

I look back on it with a bit of nostalgia. I think 4 had better character and tarot card routes, but I totally agree. Persona 3 and 4 were fun but by no means amazing, good games that maybe were great.
After playing 4 (around 100hrs) I felt like I was leaving some friends. But I was also working by myself in the freezing cold in bufallo and missing home so maybe there was some personal stuff tied up in that.
