is VR really the future or is it a failure?
>>
It looks like shit right now but give it a year, we'll hopefully get a full game
>>
it's a fad / gimmick just like Wii was
no one will care about it in a year, it'll just get forgotten quietly
>>
>>334636551
I don't think it's going away, no. It'll take people a while to figure out what best to do with it, but it's here to stay.
>>
It's the future but it's too soon.
>>
AR is the future. VR is an intermediate.
>>
>>334637143
I don't really see AR evolving to the point where it can do VR as well as a dedicated VR device. I'm thinking they can coexist.
>>
wheres the revolution
why isnt there hundreds of games being developed why isnt there 50 porn films allready out
why are things going so slow
>>
>>334636551
it'll do fine as long as there is porn
>>
>>334637328
>why isnt there 50 porn films allready out
pretty sure there are way more than that
unless you mean like feature film length
>>
>>334637328
why arent there celebrity endorsements

why arent there any promises being made on anything
>>
>>334637306
It's hard for me to see how, when people these days just love doing 50 things at once, they're ever going to get on board with something like VR that requires them to do one thing, and one thing only. That's why I think AR will be more popular. They can play immersive games and also check their Instagram.
>>
>>334636551
>all the exclusives are gimmicky mini-games

This thing is basically kinect 2.0.
>>
I think its the future, but i dont think it will be any good before some solid software and hardware gets released. What we have now sucks.

when a new device came out in the 90s or 80s they told u about it. they made it seem alive or make it seem like the next big thing. not clam up and say pretty much nothing
>>
>>334637496
Why not check your instagram while in VR? The Vive can already link to your phone with bluetooth. And within the virtual environment, VR can do anything AR can and then some.
>>
>>334637328
all I want is my JAVs in VR
that shit's actually amazing

but there's like a tiny handful of releases

there's a bunch of shitty western VR porn (if the girls were cuter, maybe it'd be better, but I don't want to pretend I'm fucking a hag)
>>
why did 3D fail? companies were banking on it. porn companies movie companies what went wrong?
>>
>>334637717
>Why not check your instagram while in VR?

Because it cuts against the entire point of VR, which is total immersion.
>>
>>334637815
they're going to have to develop special algorithms for making sure the pixelation is the same for both eyes aren't they
>>
>>334637845
Nonsense. Looking at my phone IRL doesn't make me feel less immersed in the world either.
>>
the kinect should have made Microsoft a ton of money. yet i don;'t think it did. why not?
>>
>>334637459
>why arent there celebrity endorsements

I know I'm not buying into any VR setup until I've had Steve Buscemi or a celebrity of roughly Steve Buscemi level tell me that it's worth having.
>>
>>334638059
because its a vr input solution without the vr display
>>
>>334638079
its like they want to do as little as possible. and just bring in the money from people who THINK its the next big thing
>>
Yes, but not necessarily headset-based VR.

The HMDs may remain a successful but niche product, like HOTAS setups. I think they're too big and goofy looking to really explode into mainstream appeal the way traditional consoles do.
>>
>>334638079
How many fractional Steve Buscemis do these people add up to?

no commercials
no demo at malls across america

something stinks about this whole thing
>>
It'll have it's moment like motion controls and stick around but become a backseat thing like motion controls did.
>>
>>334638017
>Looking at my phone IRL doesn't make me feel less immersed in the world either.

Yeah, I'm going to stop talking to you now.
>>
>>334636551
VR's future is failure
>>
>>334638339

3/8ths
>>
>>334638192
>not necessarily headset-based VR.
As opposed to what? Fucking CAVEs?
>>
>>334638416
Does looking at your phone make you feel like you're no longer in the room, or what? Because that's what you're arguing. Not that it diminishes your awareness of your surroundings but that it actively takes you out of them.
>>
>>334638437
I mean like fucking holodecks or something.

>CAVEs

I didn't know what that was, but that's pretty fucking cool.
>>
>>334638880
I really don't see either of those things becoming affordable. Plus people already balk at having to clear the space they need for room scale VR.
>>
>>334637328
>why isnt there hundreds of games being developed why isnt there 50 porn films allready out
i'm not trying to sound like a fag or anything, but didn't TV when it was first invented have only like 4 channels because barely anyone could afford to produce it?
>>
Major problem is no matter how advanced the tech gets we'll always get generic shit like COD XIII and GTA 21 to play on it
>>
>>334639246
Not really. Most genres don't translate 1:1 to VR. Vehicle sims are the exception.
>>
I love how people just assume the tech is good and the games will surely come!
>>
>>334636551

Once they figure out how to make it wireless with positional tracking (ie. not the Gear) and reduce the screen door effect, then yes it the future. If it remained as it is, then definitely no, because people would rather play conventionally (big TV, gamepad controller, etc.) so why waste ~$800 on that.
>>
>>334639310
Literally just a screen attached to your face so don't see how you figure that

Valve and Oculus spread their money across Indies instead of funding 1 or 2 full fledged AAA games.

I have a Vive and love it, but I cant hide my annoyance at the lack of investment into real content.
>>
>>334636551
maybe in 100 years
AR is where its REALLY at tho
>>
>OR ships in 2 weeks
I fucking hate these delays
>>
>>334639464
The point of the screen (and the tracking, which is the most important part really) is for it to be big enough, high resolution enough and especially fast enough for your subconscious to stop treating it as a screen. At that point, making your view point in the virtual environment accelerate while your physical body isn't accelerating causes a mismatch between what your inner ear says your body is doing and what your eyes say. That can and does cause motion sickness.
>>
so what you guys are telling me is if i had $5,000 to get a big screen 4k tv and game systems and ignore vr
>>
Every decade they try, Every decade they fail.
>>
Maybe having a screen grafted to your face just won't ever be popular?
>>
>>334639127
it also didn't get a significant install base for decades

televisions were prototyped in the mid 1800s, the first regularly scheduled tv broadcasts in the US started in 1928 but it didn't become widespread until the mid 1950's
>>
>>334637328
>wheres the revolution
Define revolution? new technology has an integration period. The Iphone at launch certainly didn't have the consumer base it does now
>why isnt there hundreds of games being developed why isnt there 50 porn films allready out
there are hundreds of games out, most are complete shit. In regards to porn films, they're already out there, and there's alot of them.
>why are things going so slow
It's developing as fast as anything out there, did you expect it to bloom overnight? nothing does that.
>>334637459
>why arent there celebrity endorsements
Kevin Spacey, Stephen Spielberg, etc. There are articles on celebrity endorsements every fucking week. the fucking gearvr commercial has lil wayne in it.
>why arent there any promises being made on anything
What promises are there to be made?

VR devs are turning to the wrong crowd. This sort of thing might be interesting for simulator games, not fucking Wii games.
>>
>>334640060
>stephen spielberg
boomblocks 2 confirmed?
>>
>>334638079
Yeah, but Steve Buscemi is elder god tier. If that guy endorses something, you know it's gotta be good.

VR died the moment everyone realized how expensive it would be
>>
>>334639127
Plenty of people could afford it but not everyone wanted to invest in it right away because the TV was out of most peoples price range.

Kind of how VR is going right now in a way.
>>
>>334640060
well you responded to my posts ty
>>
>>334640112
What are you even talking about? There are several simulator games that support VR. It's by far the easiest genre to add VR support to.
>>
>>334639984
You don't even need that much for 4k tv and game systems if you use your money right.

You could easily get both VR system and pc along with 4k TV and game systems with that much money.

You'd be a fucking retard to do it since money like that should be saved, invested or used on practical purchases.
>>
>>334640261
Of course more recent technology will be more expensive. Did you think the first computer was able to to bought by any household? Notice how as time progressed, they get smaller, cheaper, and better.
>>
I won't invest until they come up with a game (a game, not a modern day rail shooter FPS or a quick time event simulator) that actually makes the tech seem invaluable. So never, unless Nintendo makes a new Metroid Prime, maybe when Zelda will be half finished in 2018 kek
>>
>>334640434
That's exactly what I meant. But instead they are pushing this with shoddy minigames, that's never going to attract a serious crowd. It also seems like ergonomics are not in their concern, it feels like a run-of-the-mill novelty gizmo without long term planning.

its like buying a laptop you read a review off cnet.
you read a review off engaget. you look at forum posts. you watch a youtube video review. but you never really know what your getting until you try it hands on. and if u cant you pay and get a mystery machine

No idea what gave you that impression. Seems pretty clear to me that a lot of iterating has gone into that.
