It was after a huge surge of future/war games between Oblivion and Skyrim.
The popularity of Fallout at an alternate FPS introduced sideboards to what would have formerly been too boring for them.
And the end of the console generation, so everyone needed a game to play.
Because as much as /v/ hates it, it's a good game. It was also the first Elder Scrolls game that got the "casual" audience. They had never experienced an ES title before, so it was pretty shocking for them to see a game with so much content shoved into it.

It's obvious looking at those figures which game really made a breakout. Morrowind put the ES series on the path no question, but Skyrim is what blew open the series.
