Because Blubalz was made by largely the same people when they couldn't get the rights to Guilty Gear back, so they made a spiritual successor where a lot of the cast are copies, or very similar to Guilty Gear characters.

From the gameplay side of things, the only similarities I can remember is both having DPs with a hard knockdown axe kick and I guess Bandit Revolver and Gauntlet Hades are vaguely similar.

Blazblue is a game full of characters that are desperate. Desperate to save something or someone, or desperate to hold on to them. Ragna pretty much has nothing else to lose, everything of value to him was either taken or destroyed.

I've never been able to play BlazBlue properly, the story and characters just seem too complicated to learn for me, but I was able jump right in the deep end with Guilty Gear Xrd without much worry.

Blazblue story wasn't that complicated until ChronoPhantasma which I feel was the weakest in the story despite it having good moments in it. I still somewhat understood what was going on but with the different routes sometimes having contradicting events it made things more confusing because you have pick up what most likely is and isn't canon in the routes besides Chronophantasma since they end in non-canon endings. Also the whole Kagura office crap amounted to nothing.
Xblaze and BEE could be consider their own universes that some of the character AU selves happen to exist in the Blazblue world. It's good learn about them from their sources to have a better understand of the characters and setting they come from but it's not necessary.
