Most in this thread haven't been too helpful, so I'll try my best to go through everything.
Firstly, it's possible the NX will be out by 2017, but not a guarantee. Whether or not it is imminent is as good as an opinion given how little information is out there to support this beyond baseless rumours. Having said that, if you're hesitant due to the expectation of the NX arriving, then wait a while longer as that way games may get more releases under the Selects range, as well as the homebrew scene expanding so you could easily pirate. However, if your intent is to play online often (in games like Splatoon, Sm4sh, MK8, Mario Maker etc.) then this viewpoint won't ve useful to you, as online communities in games don't last forever.
With that out of the way, here's games I'd recommend (put some notes under ones I've personally played):

Best platformer I've played in years
>SM3DW
Superb multiplayer and fun level designs; quite easy throughout until around world fireflower
>NSMBU+Luigi U
NSMBU is okay, but easy - the challenge mode is good. Luigi U actually provides a good challenge - would recommend.
>Splatoon
Addictive, supported by regular updates (although allegedly they were supposed to stop updating it, they seem to keep going anyway)
>Mario Maker
Takes some digging, but there's some genius levels in there from various users. Little lacking in assets and themes, though.
>WWHD+TPHD
Well-done remasters. Both look great and play better than their original versions - I'd especially recommebd WWHD as that's improved the most.
>Bayonetta 2
Solid sequel to Bayo 1, marginally easier (but still provides a high challenge for the top difficulty level); opinion among fans is split over whether this or the original is the better game, but personally I preferred this one.

Gamestop recently said new consoles will hit their shelves very soon, meaning its really soon when the manufacturers are already fully working with them.
AMD said they provide 2 console SoCs this year(PS4.5 and NX).
According to WSJ production of NX started this year as 3rd party factories produce certain parts

Yeah yeah it's not exclusive, but I'd argue this is the definitive version, ideal fir multiplayer whilst also allowing you to use the gamepad's touchscreen for the Murphy levels. Overall great game but it's very easy. Most Rayman Origins levels are unlockable and have been tweaked.
>Sonic Racing Transformed
Decent port of a great game. Don't be fooled by the fact it's a Sonic game, as this is seriously good shit - it's big gimmick is transformation, both with tracks that change by the final lap, and with vehicles that transform into land, air, and water variants respectively. Solid drift controls and a strong variety of modes make this a must in my eye, just beware of the bugs

Opinion is fairly split on whether this sequel lives up to its predecessor, but for me it was still a good game - by far its biggest selling point is the beautifully-crafted game world, but the plot and music is a very mixed bag.

SM3DW is longer and has better multiplayer, but I slightly preferred DKTF's level design and better challenge.
I guess it boils down to whether you fancy playing something longer but easier, or harder but shorter (you'd probably spend about the same time on each in total anyway). If you plan on playing their multiplayer though then I'd say SM3DW is your one.

i got the NEW super mario and me and my girlfriend love the mario game. make sure you get two wiimotes and nunchucks. We also have a blast playing Donkey kong tropical freeze, i personally think COD black ops 2 is a great port with zombies and all that. having backwards compatibility with all original WII games is great and they are upscaled to HD

Tropical dong is arguably the best 2d platformer ever made. Tough (but fair), beautiful, incredibly area variety with toms of unique set pieces, and GOAT-tier soundtrack.
Fuck the haters, this game was a labor of love for retro and it shows.
