I'm in the mood for a sidescroller / brawler / metroidvania and stumbled over this one. Is it one of these throwback games that everyone praised but no-one actually likes?

Additionally I've been looking at Phantom Breaker and Rabi-Ribi, any recommendations in this regard? Don't care for the anime style, am okay with it though.
>>
i`m a huge metroid/castlevania/megaman fan but i dropped this shit after 15 minutes
>>
>>334587040
It's really good but forgetable. Might as well have called it "Not Metroid"
>>
>>334587040
Rabi-Ribi is the best of them. Axiom Verge is shit, phantom breaker is polished shit.
>>
If you haven't played Rabi-Ribi you may as well kill yourself.

Thanks, will take a closer look. Any other recs along these lines? I'm not really into bullet hells (and that's why I'm looking for metroidvania), always been interested though. Touhou is a bit much to be honest.

You tried Shantae yet?

>>334587040
It's great. I like the art style, enemy variety is obscene, weapons are interesting and there's like 20 of them.

Also check out environmental station alpha.

>Hyper Light Drifter has amateurish pixelshit copies of Evangelion monsters
>Axiom Verge has amateurish pixelshit copies of Ghost in the Shell imagery

Why do indieshit devs do this.

Well, at least AV didn't unfulfill its promises if it made any. Boss design is pretty shit.

Again with this Rabi Ribi. What makes it so good and don't say it's good becuase you're a moefag

The aquatic adventures of the last human was pretty fun.
It is really peaceful, right up until its not.

I don't have footage of me playing it but I'm sure you can find some on YT. Based on what you see there I can add that even if it looks speedy and clunky as hell, everything you see is stuff you can easily do yourself. Game has amazing, responsive and easy to learn controls and the bossfights are hard but fair because the game already gives enough tools for you to work with like healing items/abilities, rapid fire, homing shots, close-up combo attacks, etc. all with controller. Hell, I play it with 360pad and its viable. Music is pretty nice for the theme its got going. Metroidvania exploration is nothing groundbreaking but it works and there's tight but not impossible platforming. The moe is something you either love, don't care or can deal with because its what the game is made out of so if you can't handle it, don't play it.
>>
>>334588484
Well to be more clear there are no regular enemies. Its one of the only games I played where just going around looking at the scenery was fun.
Then you run into a boss and he shit stomps you into oblivion.

OP here, the reason why I thought about getting Rabi despite of the bunny bullshit is this:

These boss fights look challenging and fun
and I kind of like the music
>>
>>334588630
Well it looks like pixelshit but I will try it out.
>>
>>334588725
The fish art though. And most of the bosses are very unforgiving. Its pretty damn short though to be honest.
>>
>>334588704
I will try the game out but that bossfight doesn't look too well designed. Anyone can do simplistic bullet hell patterns. In fact I prefer monster going after you directly rather than just watching for the projectiles.

Like in webm related despite clunky animations.
>>
>>334588830
Well I like games that don't waste your time with padding if they're good. Underwater is definitely a setting not explored enough in metroidvanias.
>>
>>334587040
In terms of really strong Metroidvania games, Environmental Station Alpha has a ton of great bosses and an immense amount of content and secrets to find. Only thing is that the graphics are insanely low-res.

Well the bosses are bullet hell based mostly so I don't think you'll like it as much. There are some that actively go after you, not that many though.

If you want bosses like that, have you tried YS series?

Why?

The soundtrack really is 10/10 material. I actually bought it just to get the soundtrack.

Yeah, I like Ys, outstanding gameplay. It's just that I've noticed that most devs (at least in the west) tend to go for several bullet hell patterns in an arena and call it quits. Soon every bossfight feels deja vu. I don't think that bullet hell model itself is outdated, but the presentation often rubs me the wrong way.

i don't know why this made me lol

Guacamelee is pretty good- ignore the meme billboards and its just a solid metroidvania with a fun grappling combat system. Theres something inherently satisfying about wrestling skeletons
>>
>>334587040
Axiom Verge is very good, very metroid and very Giger

Phantom Breaker isn't worth the price tag

Just tried it, very competent beginning, I like it. Have you played Hero Core? Remar is a great designer.

Do you anons think that standard 2D presentation of Metroidvanias (though I prefer Metroid-likes due to more emphasis on exploration) games limits the innovation? What else can you do with map design in these games? It seems that you have to have really good movesets to utilize the perspective to the fullest, and innovate. I like how La-Mulana used backgrounds to tell the tale and present puzzles.

Its an easy way to instill a sense of challenge after all since direct combat might prove clunkier if you can't work out the hit/hurtboxes right yeah FROM, looking at you. If you think about it, its not so different from having an enemy/boss go for you directly. You still have to deal with the attack coming at you, you still have to figure out the patterns and you still have to find the opening. In that sense I believe its the same thing and what each person likes is purely in preference and not in what's considered better design.

YS is so good because it can incorporate both bullet hell and direct combat. Its also got the best controls, action and music to accompany it. I mean fuck, this is probably the most underwhelming boss music in all the series and its still one of my favorites.

In the case of that specific Rabi Ribi bossfight, it was made even simpler due to the fact that the map design doesn't play a role in the fight at all which is another problem with gameplay designed solely around bullet patterns - if you put obstacles in the way, the fight becomes trivial, like most encounters in Enter the Gungeon.
>>
>>334590184
gungeon is trivial because you get iframes
>>
>Still no Blame! Metroidvania as a mixture between Tomb Raider and Vanquish
>>
>>334590003
I'd take a few wonky hit boxes here and there over Gherman being a fucking bullet hell fight.
>>
>>334590184
The are multiple way to make a game challenging.
Even without obstacles Rabi Ribi can be pretty challenging.

>>
>>334587040
Fuck yes I loved this game. If you want something like the old metroids then get it. It can be a challenge too
>>
>>334591938
Absolutely worth it, it sucks you in with the atmosphere and the music fucking rocks your socks.
>>
>>334592748
Yeah it really does have underrated music. I have a lot of respect for this game considering one guy pretty much made the whole thing.
