Daily reminder that open world is a meme. Anytime a classically linear game series go open world, it ends up shit.
>>
>>334543549
Depends, an open world game can still be linear, but it gives you the ilusion that it's open world.
>>
>>334543549
Trying to recall linear game series going open world, but can't, help me out

Burnout. Burnout Paradise is such a turd compared to Burnout 3 and Burnout Revenge. Unless you play multiplayer, but multi got old after a week.

Mirrors Edge (don't know how that'll turn out).

Tony Hawk. Once one huge map replaced smaller maps or levels, the series went to shit immediately.

MGS V could've arguably been broken up into levels or areas. The area size did allow for a lot of infiltration and ex filtration methods, but you could still have a large enough area to do that without making the game open world.

Mario
>>
>>334544405
i dont know if that really counts, since it wasn't "classically" linear. witcher 1 was linear, 2 had the illusion of being open world, and 3 went full open world didnt it? havent played it

id say MGS is a perfect example, absolutely no need for an open world MGS like V

Witcher 2 has a lot more in common with Deus Ex when it comes to game space than any open world game, I'd say.

Having to drive to fucking stop lights to start events, going to garages to change your car, any menu shortcuts meant a fuck ton of load times. If you want to do a bunch of races, it was a pain in the ass to do so.

Also, no real Crash mode/levels. You know, the secondary type of mode in Burnout in the past that was fun as fuck.

Burnout Paradise is an okay racer, but did nothing for the Burnout series besides faggy mulitplayer.
>>
>>334544716
right, i actually prefer that type of game space over an open world. every area feels different and well thought out.

Final Fantasy went from open to linear to open again.
Strange
>>
>>334544740
It wasn't horrible, but it was a huge step down from Revenge.

Just what do you mean by open world OP?

If you mean shit like you ubisoft games then yes it sucks.

But a lot good classic games like Zelda Or Castlevania are 'open world' in the sense of nonlinear map design, do they suck now?

Metroid says Fuck You.

Mario says Fuck You.

Open world to me means GTA3 designed games. Go to a labeled marker on the map, start a linear mission in the open world, complete it, get reward, rinse and repeat.

OoT is like A Link to the Past but in 3D.

>>
>>334543549
what typically happens with open world games:

- graphics downgrade
- framerate issues
- generic combat
- tons of cut content
- AI with pathfinding issues
- ridiculous amount of bugs
- awful filler content
- large empty spaces

the list can go on and on. i would rather have tiny areas crammed with content than games that waste my time with little to no payoff

I wonder if people are going to look back upon today's "open world" games in the same way we look back upon the 5th gen's graphics and emergent 3D game design.

None of those are inherent to open well-designed but. With the exception of open space and what the hell is wrong with given the player room?

I'm hopeful the new Deus Ex game will be 'open world' done right with the city of Prague. I enjoyed exploring those massive maps like Hong Kong in the original.

XBX (open world) is a big improvement over Xenoblade Wii (linear). The combat system and quest board work perfectly for the open world style. There's a variety of low and high levels in each continent to grind. Leaving the city with your flying mech to do what you want or to reach your next mission feel so good. Because of this, XBX have a better post game and feel less like a chore to play.
>>
I only like fake open-world. The kind that kind of pretends it's Open World, but it isn't. It's just really big linear levels with multiple approaches.

Deus Ex. Bloodlines. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Witcher 1 and 2.

When it becomes actual real open world, it becomes, without fail, boring.
>>
the longer a series goes on for the higher chance a mech suit will be introduced

IM LOOKIN AT YOU KIRBY
>>
>>334552953

On the most literal of levels, this stands to reason. There's only so many ideas you can exhaust before you get to mechs.
