While I get that you're giving ALTTP credit for being the foundation of the rest of the series, I can't say that makes it a better game for me.
ALBW is in many ways more a re imagining of ALTTP than a true sequel. And I might have shared your problem if I had played ALTTP before ALBW, but the thing is, I hated ALTTP when I initially played it years ago, and never finished it. Only after playing ALBW did I go back and make in any farther than the second dungeon.

Honestly I don't like how DD controls
In earlier Mario Kart games, you could generally play the game to decent ability without using the drift.
And then Wii and onward (I never played DS so it might be there too) have a heavy focus on drifting correctly as part of the skill ceiling.
I like both of these for their own reason but DD always just felt so awkward because of the way drifting works in that game.
Also I never come back to this because 8's roster, vehicle options, and stage selection are all way better, also 200cc is a thing in 8.
I do think DD had the best items in the series though, add sound box and it's perfect. Baby Park is utter shite without DD's cuh ray zee items
