The biggest problem with the story in Chrono cross was how tonaly different it was from Chrono Trigger. Trigger was a fun breezy Adventure story, like something out of Indiana Jones. Cross on the other hand is a Deep philosophical exploration of the ramifications of time travel. Which makes for a really good story but it just does not jive with the kind of story that Trigger was telling. Chrono Trigger is not a game about dealing with complex consequences to messing around with timelines; it's a game about flying on a pterodactyl to a giant reptile castle and punching a T-Rex in the face.

Lucca, Marle, and Ayla actually have almost zero interaction with the overall story (Lavos, Day of Judgement, Zeal, Reptites, etc.) Same with Crono and Robo. Frog is only slightly more important, but still an overall bystander.
Magus, even when he's not on screen or in the party, is pushing the whole plot towards its finale.

Now Cross is a sequel to an established game with an established story and setting. So you had an established expectancy with regards to the game's plot among other things.

Trigger is pretty cliche and one-note, nothing really to write home to about at all. Characters are pretty one-dimensional and underdeveloped

The game was great for what it's worth, but there was
-way too much focus on the elemental aspects. If you didn't use the elements right on the last boss, you wouldn't get the "true" ending
-story was full of literally forgetable characters that you can just never meet base around 1 event
-the cast felt dry, and the number of characters didn't help
-The tie-in to Chrono Trigger felt weak, forced and an afterthought.
I'm almost glad there's no sequel, since Square Enix would just dig up the corpse and just fuck it like they did with FF.

I assume this is bait, but I will respond anyway.
Lucca is a technological genius whose knowledge and skills are constantly progressing the story, not the least of which is inventing the device that allows you to control the time hates.
Marle is a direct descendant of Schala and that connection (especially the pendant that has been passed down to her) is the catalyst that kicks off the whole story (in connection with, you guessed it, one of Lucca's inventions).
And you can't say that Crono is inconsequntial to the plot when he is the only one with the means and knowledge to save the world. The fact that he is just a random teenager is the whole point; he undertakes the mission to stop Lavos not because he is some destined hero foretold in a prophecy, but because the responsibility was placed in his lap and he is going to see it through. He could just ignore it, as he will be dead long before Lagos rises, but he doesn't because he stumbled across the power to do something and with great power comes great responsibility.

The only good new character in CC besides Leena was General Viper. That guy was a cool badass. It's too bad he was so under-utilized. You would think having the leader of the island chain on your side would get you some sweet bonuses.
