MMOs are ALL about fucking grinding.

Some people are even willing to pay to skip the grind.
>>
>>334503616
>Implying Nostalrius devs weren't making bank by giving Chinese infinite supplies of gold to sell and taking some of the profits
>>
They're not about a grind specifically as they are about infinite content. The idea that you can play them forever, thus justifying the $15 a month pricetag (that most of them no longer have)

To achieve that a lot of them did use grind to make you play for a long time. The game gives the illusion of being very long and full of things to do by making everything take a long time to do.
>>
>>334503690
you're a dipshit, why involve a middleman when you could have sold directly to the consumer
>>
>>334503616
Wow, highway robbery. I could rake in 500g in a single day of RFK farming on my rogue, just pick pocket every single mob, rinse and repeat
>>
>>334503823
well no game has infinite content, but one can derive enjoyment from MMOs from the social interaction you get from them or the types of experiences you can create in a virtual sandbox world.
>>
>>334504390
it's not highway robbery for whales who obsessively play WoW
>>
>always loved mmo's despite the grind
>constantly want to play an mmo
>work 50 hours a week
>never have more than a few hours of free time a day
>feels like I make no progress
I miss when I could play 14 hours a day for a whole summer

What would you like MMOs to be? It's be cool if you could level up your own character and then the end game could be raiding and a moba and shooter and possibly more

A be all end all super game.

I dunno I'm just thinking on the fly.
>>
>>334504548
Yes it is? There were multiple ways to exploit and make large amounts of dosh easily. Pretty sure every level capped person was aware of them on nost

Putting my hopes on Crowfall and Camelot Unchained to be honest.

I see no end in sight if they don't break this stale genre.
>>
Too be fair, grinding isn't halt bad if the area you're doing it in and the enemies you fight create the right mood.
Farming in SIlithus was fun.

>>334506653
I don't know what you're smoking.

Grinding is not fun because it's repetitive.
>>
>>334507204
Most of the things people play is repetitive.
Your favourite shooter? Repetitive as fuck.
Your favourite RTS? Boy can't wait to do the same old buildorder again next game.
Action game? Spamming attack never get's old.
etc.
>>
How do you make MMOs great again?
>>
>>334509183
Combine them all into one genre. Your character does it all, platformer, shooter, puzzles, moba, normal mmo end game etc etc etc.
>>
>>334509493
You're going to have to be more specific, this innovation sounds great.
>>
>>334509183
Make them community based again.
>>
Real life is basically grinding you loser

Its how shit works
>>
>>334509880
Voting in politics is community based, but it's pretty shit. How do you prevent this in an MMO?
>>
>>334509493
dont all MMOs do this already?
GW2:
[x] fuckton of jumping puzzles
[x] some actual puzzles
[x] first-person shooter adventures (fuck those, i can barely get bronze score there)
[x] stronghold PvP mode is 2 lane-MOBA
[x] the usual dungeons, raids, and [story-]quests
>>
>>334509901
That's why people don't like grinding man. It's escapism. They want immediate gratification.
>>
>>334510604
>all MMOs
>example of one
>>
>>334505703
What's so immersive about it?
>>
>>334504695
I feel like there should be an ideal amount of hours to play for casuals and still progress with your pals. I don't really know how to fix it aside from limiting you in your hours of playtime. For like, everyone.

>Get to only play an hour of the MMO a day
>This limits everyone to have the same amount of time to play
>Creates a constant progression

Or something like

>Depending on chapter of MMO you are in, you get an amount of hours to play before having to take a break
>The longer, the more hours, the shorter, less hours until break
>Break after a mission so as to prevent addiction
>>
>>334510604
And GW2 doesn't really have a real grind, I mean you can grind for stuff. But you don't have to, you can do all the end game content without grinding a day in your life as there's no stat treadmill.

You *can* grind for that fancy skin/legendary or you can just wait for your own materials and gold to build up as you play and enjoy the game and then create it.
>>
Aren't most games about grind though? Just in a different form.
>>
>>334511675
Grind and progression through repetitive mechanics aren't the same thing.
>>
>>334503616
id much rather a server fund itself by selling gold than items
>>
>>334511554
Is PvE good yet?
>>
>>334511919
That fucks up the economy though.
>>
>>334511947
The raids are fun, at least.
>>
>>334511947
How does one make PvE ever good?
>>
>>334511427
but it limits how fast you can catch up to others so it cant be competitive and needs heavy diminishing returns, and needs to be based not on time but somthing like currency/xp earned per day.
Kingdom of Loathing (text- and stickfigures browser MMO) has such a system and it works quite well, its enough to have some daily fun, but not long enough to make you neglect other activities. Your action count recharges every day and carries over up to a maximum of a few days worth, so you arent forced to check in every day
>>
>>334511675
The difference between grinding levels in an rpg and, lets say, grinding combos in a fighting game or practising movement on an fps, is that in the former, your character gets better without you, as a player, necesarily getting better at the same time, but in the later, you are the one getting better as you play the game
>>
So I've got a question for everyone
When will we get an mmo with DMC tier combat without the game being instance based?
>>
Is Albion Online or Black Desert any good?

One of the last important note by the head developer was a cancellation of a content they promise for the expansions, the new legendary set. But hey, they will shit out more and more cash shop items!

>>334511947
No. Everything that use to make it fun was nerf. Dungeon reward was nerf. Fractal (high end dungeon) was nerf. Raid is only once a week and it's a mess with meta of Zerker. PvP is P2Win. WvW is ignored. There is literally nothing to do other than to grind legendaries
>>
>>334511554
>I mean you can grind for stuff. But you don't have to
That is the entire existence of HoT. Fuck you.
>>
I'd give my left nut for a pre-EQ style hardcore MMO like Ultima Online or Meridian 59.

Skill-based, full loot, no instances; that's my shit.
>>
>>334513171
That´s a joke right? That shit can´t be real? What company that´s profit-oriented would actually allow something like that to happen?

I hate to use this term, but sheeples. They let this happen. They bought a 50 dollar expansions in promises of content like the Legendaries, and they just cancel it after making the 3 one out of 20. Many were outrage that they literally paid for half of an expansions but you got people defending this saying that they might add more content in the Living Story 3, ignoring the fact that they could have done both. Keep in mind that they are making another expansions with 70 people working on it and they didn't bother finishing HoT.
>>
>>334511427

i feel like this is the stupidest idea ever thought by a human being.
>>
>>334514757
that wasnt an argument?
he states his opinion, says there is a current problem that needs fixing, and brings up a potential solution. nowhere in that post does he argue anything
>>
>>334511427
tell your friends to not play the game without you moron
>>
>>334503616
how fucking stupid do you have to be to buy gold on a private server
>>
>>334515746
People buy things on private servers all the time though.
>>
>>334515746
money well spent
>>
>>334515746
Enjoyment doesn't have to last forever, it just has to last a certain portion of your life and that's it. Keep your memories of the good times and move on to a new game.
>>
>>334503616
>every online game ever

You act like lvl/selling services are unique to MMOs and this doesn't happen all the time in DOTA/Leage/CS/HS
>>
>>334503616
>87% of our customers receive...make a purchase and see why

seems sketchy, does anyone know why?
>>
>>334516760
Because people who buy the first time are going to buy the next time. It's like drugs, don't ever buy it and you won't suffer.
>>
>>334515746
it's not stupid. the prices are so low that it makes sense if you dont have time to farm or just dont want to.
>>

>>
>>334503867
Because that way they can pretend they're in the right because they aren't making money off the server

Players, or groups of them, defending large castles and buildings providing resources to their guild-faction-server.
Unit collision in pvp.
Horizontal gear progression, with any veritcal progression at endgame being dictated by pvp.

I just want Warhammer online again
>>
the original version of Ultima Online had it right. There was no grind, no "quests" you were forced to partake in order to stay competitive, no legendary items that you needed to collect to be the best. they made a world and you lived in it....the economy was 95% player based. you could own land, tame animals, go to dungeons, fight other players, join large guilds and war each other or just chill and do something like fish or mine for ore and then build armor and weapons to sell.

UO did it right and everyone since then has failed....even WoW
>>
>>334525812
>failed
>12 million subs at it's peak

wut
>>
News of Nostralius made me want to play Everquest again so I tried project 1999 and holy shit I wasn't prepared for how 1999s Everquest was.

Took me like an hour to get from level 3 to 4 on my Magician. It was awesome.

Now I'm sitting in Eastern Commons trying desperately to sell bone chips so I can afford all my spells.
>>
>>334521978
There are no boost service for DotA because levels do nothing at all
>>
>>334527516
You still need to have a certain amount of games (or was it a certain level?) before you can play ranked.
>>
>>334525812
This. SWG wasn't half bad either.
>>
>>334529530
God I miss those SWG days.

I just want to be a simple weapons trader again who dabs into occasional cooking.
