WoW was a casual MMO compared to any other at the start, but compared to today, at least it felt alive, at least it felt grand and like a living world. They made games that were playable in LAN, they made games with unrestricted modding tools, they made games for nerds, made by nerds, but once they became famous, they realised they could make even more money by focusing on a completely different demographic of players, people who jump on the bandwagon because their friends are playing a game.

You max out, do the raids and dungeons that everyone who plays the game does, and you'll do it with people you'll never see again, and you'll fill in the downtime with tedious dailies. Blizzard's biggest problem has been listening to the wrong feedback, or just assuming they knew best. They have been so awful about listening to their communities for years and years. This is why WoW went to shit, why SC2 is 1/10the the player base it used to be, why D3 started out crap, etc.
