There are reasons to hate valve, but that is not one of them. They immediately backed out of it, which is something that other companies might not have done. I think they deserve a little bit of credit for knowing when to drop something.

I don't hate DRM. I hate badly implemented DRM that messes with my hardware or gathers personal information.
Because DRM 99% of the time irritates people, slows shit down and makes you feel like you're being treated like shit even as a paying customer.
Steam is easy as hell, cheap and more convenient than pirating everything. Easy on your harddrive, easy on your wallet and easy on the eyes.
Sure it's still DRM, but most people only care about that when it gets in your face.

I would love it way more if they would make all games playable offline, though.
Like, you already have parts of your account information stored on your computer, so why not just make the game detect the account information and check if you own the game and just let you play it offline.

Of course Steam has an offline mode, the problem is that it's complete shit and unreliable as fuck. Were any of you idiots ever actually forced to use it? It works MAYBE for the first time you try to sign in, from there on it's good luck to you trying to play the games you "own" (because remember: according to Valve EULA it's all just "subscriptions" to "game services" :^])
