MK9 didn't take itself too seriously, whereas MKX did. Kombat Kids don't mesh with the tone of the series at all. MK is basically a saturday morning cartoon plot with the occasional shit gets real episode and while MK9 had some serious faults (sindel killing most of the roster for plot convenience), it still had a better cast of characters and effectual villians like Shao Khan.
Mechanically, MKX seems to be superior though.

Mortal Kombat is about ninjas, military people and kung fu warriors battling aliens from other dimensions and murdering the fuck out of them. MKX, suddenly it's family drama, Kung Jin angsting about being a homo, Jackie doing...something and Cassie going through a minimalist hero's journey set up that doesn't really feel good because Shinnok was heavily underutilized and spent most of the plot being trapped so Cassie's victory feels cheap, especially due to last minute powers (like Korra S1).
I can't think of anything entertaining pertaining to the Kids, either.

Because it was a fresh MK game after like a decade of shit. MKX tried to recapture the magic but failed miserably. MK9 not only reinvented the MK series, but revolutionized fighting game in way that it was the first fighting game to give you a substantial single player content.
If fighting games aren't copying its story mode, they are failing to appeal to casuals, and are going to fail as a business practice, because the FGC is too small (look at SFV sales.)
