How do you even respond to piratefags who use this argument?

Don't argue in the first place? Are you the dev's marketer? Are you getting a handjob under the desk by converting pirates into a sale?

No?

This is a weak argument, that is not always the case. Plenty of small developers who make lesser known games suffer because of piracy.

Undertale is a small completely story-driven RPG with freely circulated DRM-free pirate copies since day one and tons of full let's play videos covering every aspect of it in the weeks after its release and it managed to sell at least 1.5 million. I pirate out of sheer spite desu. I got fucked in the ass from monday to friday since 06 with shitty games, shitty ports, shitty rehashes of shitty games, no demos, bullshots, bullfucking e3 demos, hell I got a huge stack of games over here for which I fucking HATE myself having paid money for. That's a lot on a consumer to have him hate himself buying your product.
You see the problem is that these corporations don't give a fuck about their consumers, because they got us by the balls. You can either eat their shit up or not play anything at all. Majority of so-called developers in this industry are untalented passionless hacks. The studios may have a good art department but the main teams are filled with 9 to 5 wageslaves and buisness suits that have no buisness make games in the first place.
In the end I don't give a fuck anymore, I supported this hobby and this industry since it's babysteps. I'm one of the many reasons why Activision still exists for example. I still remember their logo from the 8-bit times where piracy was way more than it is today, everyone copied that floppy. But oh wonder look at Activision, they are still here.
It all becomes a very clear picture if you have seen it all with your own eyes.
Back in pre 06, /v/ as a whole knew all this, it doesn't anymore, and that's what people mean when they say neo /v/. Even if you kids misuse that too nowadays.

Hasn't it been proved that "pirates" are the people who spend the most on media? I mean, video games, movies, books, music. I think there was a study out there that pretty much said this.

Also, taking into account that most pirates are people who have understand PC's (even if just a little, my GF or my Dad can't pirate anything, they don't know how to), aren't they the demographic that actually care about games? I can't see many normies buying Dragons Dogma, no, casuals will only buy games from the biggest franchises. the nerd with 200 games in his steam account is a guy that has or still does, pirate games.

The biggest victim of piracy are niche games. Tech savvy players taking what they want for free(why bother with games that aren't good?) and withering the part of the industry that they like.

While mainstream AAA grows like a weed that further damages it because they're too big for piracy to effect. Pirating niche games instead of supporting them only helps AAA win out.

>The biggest victim of piracy are niche games
And those games either die out because they're too niche to be sustainable, regardless of whether they're even piratable. Or they become big enough that they can pander to the wider audience and abandon the audience that got them their in the first place.

Piracy is the biggest scapegoat in this entire industry. Porn get pirated ∞ times more than video games. Literally anyone who argues against piracy on 4chan is a fucking mong.
>>
>>334460123
The fundamental problem with that rationale is that the people who pirate were never going to buy the game anyways. It's not any different than if you made an RTS and then complaining that fighting-game-players didn't buy it. If your business plan assumed that people who weren't in your target audience were going to buy it then you deserve to go out of business.
>>
>>334460278
You're not convincing anyone faggot. You still don't understand basic concepts even when you've been told straight out that denuvo threads and other anti-piracy b8 gets posted here every day making your hypocritical bullshit null and void

>The fundamental problem with that rationale is that the people who pirate were never going to buy the game anyways.

If piracy was not an option, it just didn't exist at all, do you seriously think sales for all games would be exactly the same as they are now?

Let me guess, you think they'd be less, right? Because of "word of mouth"? As if that argument still stands in the age of Twitch and Youtube.
>>
>>334460771
>he doesn't have friends
Word of mouth is still very important, even just getting the initial namedrop out helps loads
>>
>>334460512
>is that the people who pirate were never going to buy the game anyways.

That's bullshit. The DS proves that once introduced a convenient method of piracy can turn willing paying customers into pirates.

In 2009 when the DS still sold 20 million hardware each year and was getting tonnes of Software the software sales in Europe dropped by 50%, if the systems growth was pirates the sales should have just held steady but they plummeted.

People who would otherwise buy the game would pirate it once the option becomes available as it becomes an opportunity to play the game they want for free and save their money to spend on something they can't pirate.
>>
>>334454137
>Plenty of small developers who make lesser known games suffer because of piracy.
plenty of small developers BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT MAJOR AAA COMPANIES also suck at marketing their games and have a convenient "piracy" issue to fall back on

congratulations

you have figured out the magical ingredient to sell games even if you suck at developing - pandering to target audiences

everyone has to market their games to an audience for it to sell holy shit, too many indie devs for some reason seem to completely ignore this though and seem to think of themselves as artists, creative producers or some shit
>>
>>334461353

Some indie devs just want to get their game out and how profitable it ends up being is only a secondary consideration.

>>334458053

What are BDs and DVDs? Import if you must. Anime is cheap if you're buying in region, and if it isn't available in your region then import and pay the extra fees. Hell, importing anime may be expensive, but importing manga is cheap as fuck. I've done it and its great. Its better quality than R1 releases are, even in manga.
>>
>>334461517

Of course word of mouth is still important. Twitch and Youtube implies you already are interested in the product and want to learn more. Word of mouth has the ability to pass interest to people who were previously indifferent/unaware.

Not even a pirateboo, but c'mon.
>>
>>334461502
>and how profitable it ends up being is only a secondary consideration
or it never gets brought up because they got lucky or had a natural sense for an audience in the first place

you can bitch about yandere sim and undertale for being shit but the creators with or without research knew exactly what the audience would slobber over since they are sort of embedded in the community

Nintendo Estimated a drop of 45% in Europe after the release of that device. That drop is over 4 times larger than was estimated in the US and over 6 times larger than was estimated in Japan.

Now either people in the US and Japan are more honest (they aren't) or there are clearly other factors involved.

Example: doesn't Europe have some pretty bad censorship laws on video games? Perhaps they were pirating less censored US versions?

Example2: Europeans pay far higher prices for video games for absolutely no good reason?

Naturally. Most of /a/ can't read or speak moon, they aren't going to import anime or manga. At the same time localization companies/publishers are shit and we would be ecstatic if they went out of business so we aren't going to buy from them.
>>
>>334461589
Ok, i'll bite.

Do you buy this stuff purely for moral reasons? Logically and economically it makes no sense to do so from the perspective of the consumer. Free is objectively better than having to pay for the exact same product.

Does it make you feel better? IE are you spending money to generate positive emotions (which is a transaction I understand) because otherwise I cannot see the logic in your actions.

Being from the UK I can tell you it's because it was ridiculously easier to pirate. Store owners had no problem selling R4 with dozens of games pre-installed on you could have absolutely no idea how to download games but in one purchase get dozens and rarely if not never have to buy a game again.

When the lowest common denominator can pirate without thinking then it spins out of control. I think valve believes it-s all abut service. However if on Steam there was a free download button next to every game called "pirate" I don't think think they'd retain their success.
