Im going to try to work on the concept mesh for the thing that you play as, its going to be some kind of tentacle armed thing attached to the first person camera.

I fixed the camera for the bug creature you possess, made it align to the surface it walks on and got a new music track.

Fuck hands, okay?

Fucking God or Dawkins or evolution or whatever the fuck you feel like believing in has culminated in thousands upon millions of years of cell evolution for apes and people to have hands.

And hands are pretty fucking cool, I'll admit. The opposable thumb is a pretty swell idea, and I wish I'd patented it myself.

But motherfucking goddamed hands are the most bullshit part of any art project. Are you drawing? You had better hope the hands are out of the frame. Making a 3D model? Make it handless, because you're in for a fuck of a time if you want to mould that shit. Making wax casts? Slip that shit off careful, because your fragile fucking meat sticks aren't worth shit without the bones inside of them. Fisting yourself? Congrats, you found a fucking use for hands that doesn't involve people having to recreate them, you asshole.

Fuck hands. Hands fucking suck.

The world would be a better place if we had fucking flippers.

Then submit the game with the theme selected in an hour within 48 hours (then needs the source code, and be individual) or 72 hours for the JAM, no need to submit source code, and can be a team.

>>
>>334424194
Depends on what you're using them for. Paint is actually pretty good when it comes to simple pixel work, aside from the amount of undos you have and the lack of layers. (If you ever made sprites back in the day you know ways around it, but at this point learning the tricks are more trouble than they're worth). If you're trying to make more complex things, you should try photoshop or paint.net, but ultimately the best program is one you know how to use.

Hey anons, if any of you wouldn't mind answering a quick question I'd be pretty grateful. I've been working on a lewd game for a while now and been posting in these threads, but I keep finding myself trying to work on so many different things at once.

This'll hopefully give me some kind of much needed focus towards what'll hopefully be important to potential players. Thanks in advance if you drop a vote.

>>
>>334424759
Gives me a sort of Yoshi's Island feel. I like it!
>>
>>334425023
Honestly some of those don't seem mutually exclusive, I never liked reading lore as a big dump of text, it's more interesting if you frame your world-building within the context of character conversations and interactions.
>>
>>334424717
then use paint.net
it's better than paint, but not too complicated
>>
>>334425123
The lights and shadows are rushed, unlike the tiles, otherwise the rays would probably be 45 degrees and all pixel perfect, but ideally they'll have small light patch where they "land", or they'll just diapers out before reaching the ground. Which ever looks better in practice.
Thanks for noting that you disliked it, though, I'm very much interested in suggestions on how to improve readability.

It's just something I typed up when I was tired the other night, just because something comes out higher doesn't mean I'm going to drop it completely for something else.

I was debating whether or not to even include a world building section at all, or if I was just going to bundle it in with gameplay under the more "non-lewd" elements.

Thanks for the feedback though, I'd be hoping to avoid lore dumps outside of things like the intro and potential codex/atlus thing.

Explain the 48 hours and 72 hours thing... If I make it in 48 I have to give source code, but if I do it in 72 I don't?
>>
>>334427075
there are 2 categories for the competition:
the compo, and the jam
2 styles, the compo is 48 hours. It's the original way to do ludum dare. And everything has to be original. Even the fonts I think. Everything from 0 made by you.

The Jam is more relaxed, you have 24 more hours, and you don't need to release the source code. And you can use teams.

>>
>>334427075

(not that anon)

I haven't participated in about two years.

The 48 hour one is the "original" one and it's "hard-mode":
- 48 hours to make a game
- One man teams
- everything must be created by you (main code & assets. you can use frameworks, engines and libs, of course)

The 72 hour one is more relaxed:
- 72 hours to make a game
- Teams can have any size
- You can use assets created by other if their license allows for (Public domain, Some creative commons licenses)

Keep this in mind:
- Your main goal should be to have a Finished Game (mechanics, gui, some passable art and a couple of levels)
- For that KEEP THE GAME SIMPLE! I've abandoned previous LDs because I tried to do weird shit.
- Don't be afraid to use "kiddy-grade" tools. (Game Maker, Stencyl, etc) They are great for these kinds of things because they GET SHIT DONE QUICK!
- Have fun!

Heh. That sounds good, but what I really want to do is an RPG. I already have most of the lore, and according to my friends it's pretty good.
>>
>>334428785
Basically, instead of "making an RPG" you have to decompose what "RPG" actually means in general, and also what it means to you. When you say "I want to make an RPG" do you actually mean the implicit " I want to sit there coding hundreds of stat tables in an inventory system" and so on? Figure out what you actually want to do, then separate it into smaller achievable goals.

Like >>334428889 said, start with Pong. It might seem irrelevant, but you need to understand how to control movement, variables, etc. Then scale up and make the next step, and so on.
>>
>>334429474

>>334429532

>>
>>334428463
Its good that yours is smaller. What ive got is chaos on paper that i must go back through and filter the good ideas out myself because who knows how much of it is still good or usable. Its just how I do things though, it makes things harder to plan or execute, but I think has some benefits for me.
>>
>>334429407
you shit in the game, you throw pieces of feces around until you make something, then that something moves around and falls on somebody's face.

This that I just said, you tell it to 20 people, and 20 people will make you a different game out of this.

And this is just an idea about shapeshifting shit.
There are tons of ideas for making a game with a theme. The theme itself is not bad. It will be very varied.
>>
>>334429532
>For certain reasons, I want my first game to be my only one. So I'll put everything I got into it.
This is a bit like saying
>I want my first song to be my only one, so I'm just going to pick up this guitar and start jamming
You have to learn how to hum, how to read music (even if only to know how to write it down), how scales and chords work, etc. Don't get me wrong, jumping right in and doing is great, but you have to have at least a little understanding and direction.
>>
>>334429759
yeah, different things work for different people. iv found that a lot of my "great ideas" are actually awful when i implement them, so i try to just prototype and iterate rather than have a grand plan. the game gets made organically as i go, attempting to fix whats shit and reinforce what turns out good

im always surprised at how bad my ideas turn out in reality

Hello my fellow creatures of the night, my name is Vamp Seed (You can call me VSEED) I'm the lead programmer of the upcoming game NEO-Transylvania.

I had to take a few months off from working on it, as I wanted to write more to the plot and find inspiration for the game. It's a huge adventure game, one of the biggest ever made in flash. It is just over a half hour long, a true epic in swf form.

I'm hoping to have it done in a few short months, it's a game where I write, compose, and draw all the art.

It's about fighting an evil vampiric outbreak, even though you are a vampire yourself. You will find out more as release date gets closer.

For now, I will leave you with this screenshot, and word that there will be more in the future. Remember, don't accept any imitators, only the true VSEEDâ„¢

And remember, when you go out at night... Watch your step!

This sort of negativity is not needed. I'm a one man crew making a huge epic of a game, you can't expect perfection. But, you should expect something that is pretty much near what perfection can be, if one person is making it. You will be eating those words when this game is released, and you realize how you were talking to the next great game director of our time.

I appreciate this, it's always great to talk to one of my fans (I like to call them VampFanz), please take a piece of art from my game..Signed (digitally) by me!

dont burst his bubble he just wants to feel like a game developer without actually putting in any effort
>>

Hah. When you say it like that it sounds stupid. I don't know what to say, it just sounds easier in my mind.

If you're using RPG Maker, it takes care of a lot for you, but there is a learning curve to everything. Go download a version, open any tutorial, and learn fundamental things like movement and states. You're still going to need prototypes.

Everything is always easier in your mind, especially with programming. The only way to make it less difficult is to start doing.

He's just being realist, like an older brother. But I'm really stubborn, so I'll try even if it takes me a lot of time and effort

I already messed with RPG maker. I've been using it for a couple of years, but I haven't considered my ideas as good as I think they're now. Now I have a somewhat creative and likeable setting which I think hasn't been exploited yet. Besides it'll have bonus points for being indie.

Most core gameplay stuff works, making online multiplayer work properly, then more features, then real graphics and presentability. Already probably busy tonight though

I use PyxelEdit and it handles tiling and animations well enough for me. I think it was like 10 bux.

>Now I have a somewhat creative and likeable setting which I think hasn't been exploited yet.

everytime I heard this, I laugh.
Because all settings have been used. One way or another.

Nobody give a shit about your snazzy setting or unique one of a kind story. Jonathan Blow learn that lesson well.

All that matters is how well your execution is.
How well you make the game. How fun it is to others you are focusing on.

This is why people who keep making the same crap year after year still gets a lot of money than idiots who think their special snowflakes deserved to shoved into everyone faces.

The video game industry is a free market. If you make something people like to play, they may support you by paying you for your game.

You make a piece of turd, nobody cares no matter how unique the turd look.

Working on making a few areas in 3d to see how they come out then choose to either go on with 2d or 3d for the actual game.
>>
>>334427945
nope
most shit, I just implement as the need/desire comes up

please keep posting this for 3 days.
It motivates the hell out of me not to be a giver-upper

And a question for all:
variable naming, one of the 3 hardest things for a game programmer;

Let's say I have a timer for how often a guy can shoot.
so I have:
TimeLeftUntilCanShootAgain = DefaultTimeBetweenShots;

And then the TimeLeftUntilCanShootAgain is reduced until 0 every update();

How would you name these?!?!
>>
LD idea:

fps but you can change the environment like create cover, or make doors in walls

?
>>
>>334434045
terrain shapeshift
can you do that in 71 hours?
>>
>>334434196
i would cheap that shit somehow. just make a block animate out the wall or floor..
>>
>>334433717
I'd name them shotTimer and shotTimeDefault
>>
>>334434529
thanks
I need to work on my naming skills
>>
>>334433717
2 variable here. "fireRate" and "lastShot"

if (lastShot + fireRate < current time){
shoot();
lastShot = current time
}

just ask yourself what you would read, and instantly know what it meant. probably different for everyone. i keep my variable names short cause i hate reading long vars.. its ugly
>>
>>334434871
but firerate is wrong
that would mean "2 shoots per second" or something, not time left until the next bullet
>>
>>334435308
read it again and learn to code faggot
>>
>>334435781
fire rate doesn't indicate a time length
it indicates amount of projectiles in a given second/minute
you can't use it like that and it making sense.

"The rate of this weapon is 5 bullets per second" is correct
"The rate of this weapon is 0.2 seconds"
that's not what rate means.
if you use it like in that code, it's just wrong.
the name is incorrect.

>>334436479
so change the name senpai. whatever

I'm going to through the tutorial for Defold, King's engine that went public recently.
I was intrigued by Lumberyard and Cryengine but I've heard they're both hugely disappointing, is that still true?
