I never attack pokemon I'm trying to catch due to possible recoil such as struggle+crits. I just chuck balls at it with an immune pokemon in the front slot. Some require setup like Zekrom/Reshiram to negate their mold breakers, but otherwise just Shedinja plus one pokemon with heal pulse will do just fine. That should actually work easily. Struggle can be healed up and Shedinja is immune to Cobalion's attack. Works with Sableye + Mewtwo as well. Just bring lots of balls and lead with a quick ball.

Got the fucker to like 5 HP (was a dumb kid, didn't know to use False Swipe) and had it paralyzed, and threw Dusk Ball after Dusk Ball at it until it Struggled and KO'd itself. This happened about three times before I succeeded.
Honorable mention to Latias in Sapphire because I wasn't smart enough to save my Masterball for the roaming Legendary, chased that fucker for weeks before I caught it. I miss roaming Legendaries, I don't care what the detractors say they should not have removed roaming Lati@s in ORAS.

I always use my Masterball on one of them, and if I ever replay GSC it's always Crystal with edited wild encounters (so GS exclusives like Mareep can be caught) so I only would have to deal with one of them.

Yeah it pretty much requires a very specific setup unless the pokemon can't damage Shedinja or Sableye (i.e. gastro acid + spite). For early stuff you do have to do the whole weakening+status thing. I feel good about bringing some pokemon/moves just for catching (i.e. quagsire damp or smeargle with void) though, so I haven't lost any rare/shiny pokemon yet because I've never attacked one and I've always been able to heal them if they were somehow hurt andlook up if it had explosion/selfdestruct on the 3ds browser.

Fuck this shit, in the original R/S/E this thing was an absolute pain in the ass. You couldn't reliably lower its HP or hit it with status because it had Rest, and Outrage would more often than not cause it to kill itself out of confusion anyway. Plus, the thing hits like a fucking truck so you'd better be packing one hell of a tank or a gorillion hyper potions if you want to last more than 6 turns against it. I eventually worked out that just flashing it/double teaming until it can't hit you worth a damn and then just spamming it with Pokeballs while you watch TV or something was the optimal strategy, but this thing caused me so much rage it's unbelievable.
And then they made it insultingly easy to catch in the Delta Episode in ORAS. (Catch rate boosted from 3 to 45 lmao)
