The episodic nature was revealed like a day or two after the trailer, and some of the first tidal waves of bitching was either "oh no this looks linear", "cloud looks like a gangly white trash teen", and "they fucking butchered the gameplay and made it mash x to win kingdom hearts fuck you nomura you talentless hack"
