What happened to point and click adventures?
They are still around.
Deponia book of unwritten tales etc
>>334400583
tip top tet
People stopped playing them because theyre fucking shit
Point and click thread?
Speaking of, I just got the telltale humblebundle
>Back to the Future
>Sam & Max Devil's Playhouse
>Puzzle Agent 1 & 2
>Walking Dead Season 1
Which of these should I play first?
>>334400975
Puzzle Agent for sure
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4SUYRhHC88
>>334400424
The longest Journey - 2000
Beneath a Steel Sky - 1994
I have no mouth and I must scream - 1995
They stopped making good ones over 15 years ago.
>>334400424
Kids want mature shooters to make them feel old.
>>334401150
Already started sam & max
Will play this next though forsure
>>334400424
Too difficult for kids today
>>334400424
it's hard to balance tedious solutions and fun dialogue into a game. not to mention 3d is standard nowadays
>>334401185
King Arts games and Frogware Sherlock Holmes are pretty good, although the later is becoming more Telltale like in the last games.
>>334401363
>asks which to play first
>already started playing one of them
>>334400424
They turned into Telltale games
>>334401446
>King Arts games
Kickstarter.
Pass.
There's that one indie adventure game series with a woman and a ghost dude with a fedora. There's just no market for these games because they don't push hardware sales for having XXXtreme graphics and frame rates.
>>334401447
Still taking your advice, I had been wanting to play a sam and max game for some time now anyway
The Last Door series îs the best
Dig could've been much better if not for cryptic literal alien-like puzzles
Beneath a Steel Sky is my favourite and needs a sequel, or better yet a prequel.
>Oh I love point and click games!! All those escape games for smartphones!! :D
>>334400904
this
the game designers were too autistic
>>334400904
>>334403170
M I L L E N I A L S
The evolved. They split into interactive stories like Telltale games or walking simulators. Some still exist, like how you'll rarely get a new traditional RTS.
>>334403264
you're probably a fucking millennial too, lmao
unless you were born in the 70's
>>334403264
Literally you.
>monkey island is dead forever
I'm both sad and a bit glad it isn't going to be defiled more than it already was.
>tfw telltale actually did a decent job
>tfw if was before telltale exploded and they had no money so it's budget was next to nothing
>disney won't let them do another
>telltale is shit now anyway so it wouldn't matter even if they did
>disney won't do anything with it because pirates of the Caribbean
Fuckin shame
>>334401185
The first Broken Sword game is my favourite game of all time.
>>334402643
Patrician taste you got there anon.
>>334403734
>Disney
You, what?
I've got "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" gathering dust on my hard drive. Should really get around to it at some point.
I used to like them as a kid, now I wonder why.
The challenges don't stick to logical, elegant guidelines like in strict puzzle games.
Like in exploration games you can only really beat them once. Once the mystery is solved, there's no reason to play them again.
Furthermore, and because of the points above, they relied extensively on narrative and graphics in order to attract players. This is the opposite of what strict puzzle games do, where the gameplay drives the game.
To top it off, their mechanics were pretty stagnant. I recently finished Loom (played the demo as a kid) and it was pretty original, but it's an exception.
>>334400424
Tim Schafer essentially killed the genre for a while because he kept going extremely over budget/deadlines, and sunk LucasArts.
They've experienced a resurgence in the past five or so years.
>>334404152
LucasFilm/LucasArts was bought by Disney, mostly for the Star Wars license.
>>334404815
Oh shit that's right, I only ever thought of Star Wars.
Fucking damn it Lucas, you piece of shit.
Pixel art takes effort
3D point and click games have no audience
>>334403332
>too
Kill yourself mil cancer
Does anyone else here actually like broken age? I thought it had nice presentation and the characters were fun
>>334400424
They split into puzzle games and Telltale games.
>>334406041
to me it doesnt even matter if its good anymore
it could be the best game of all time for all i care, i refuse to support mr. shitface in any way
How did Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief turn out? I remember really liking the first episode, but I never got around to 2 and 3 for some reason.
>>334406041
The first part was nothing amazing, but I still enjoyed it. The second part completely shit the bed.
>>334400424
>leading a small dev team making a new original adventure
>people are really got at what they are doing
>mfw I can't get financing because everybody asks for inovation
>>334406462
Do a VR point'n'click game.
>>334404815
Good thing they haven't even touched the series.
>>334407306
I hate you so much for this. Mainly because that was actually a question of one investor.
"Can you implement VR somehow?"
>>334400424
Do not worry, Ron Gilbert will save us.
>>334407757
Ron Gilbert is the true hero we deserve, not Mr. Shitface.
>>334407619
Life isn't worth living.
>>334407619
I wasn't really being serious though.
Do you know what I really enjoyed back in the day? Gabriel Knight 3 had some 'puzzles' where you had to research information on a laptop, and you actually learned something because you were researching history.
Do something like that maybe, but on a bigger scope, I don't know.
Best of luck on your game anon.
>working on my own point n click adventure
>tfw lazy and probably never going to finish it
It's been my dream project since I was a little kid to make my own adventure game, and now that I'm making one I'm really exhausted after just thinking about making all the sprites etc.
I don't have any friends to collaborate with.
who /wadjet/ here
>>334407757
Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiit. This is my first time hearing about this and I'm hype.
>>334408104
Love the wet jet eye.
>>334407757
I have such high hopes for this...
>>334407995
I also dream of making one anon, but yeah sprites are hard, if you don't know what you're doing.
What engine are you using?
>>334408263
AGS, I've seen people do some really impressive adventure games with that.
>>334408142
Where have you been?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnjqcITQ6wY
>>334408358
I head the engine wasn't very good, but what the fuck do I know.
Good luck m8.
>>334408376
Yeah I just watched that and it already looks the best adventure game in 20 years.
>>334408376
I like this trailer more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFPnAbYqmMw
>>334400424
They evolved survival horror games and then SH evolved into action.
>>334400424
Telltale still makes point-and-click stuff.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing though.
>>334409558
YOU wATCH YOUR MOUTH YOUNG MAN! OR I WILL WASH OUT THAT FILTH WITH SOAP!
They died along with peoples' attention spans.
>>334400424
they evolved into telltale type games.
Last one I played was the newest Broken Sword, and it was really good compared to the 3D games(which were shit).
What's the name of the game Mike and James played?
>>334408104
Technobabylon was pretty good
>>334410625
More like degraded.
>tfw played through all the monkey islands a few months ago
Yet to play the 3d one though that was released on ps2 though. Played it years ago but hadn't played the previous ones at the time
>>334410761
My nigga.
Altough I wish they had returned to hand drawn grafix.
>>334410879
Don't bother, the gameplay is disgusting.
>work for lucasarts
>toil night and day over freelance police
>they cancel it because the adventure game market "didn't shrink, it just vanished"
>they switch to producing nothing but licensed garbage
>quit
>form own company, with own game about the freelance police
>carve out niche among adventure game enthusiasts
>years later
>adventure games don't make enough money
>fuck adventure game fans
>make nothing but licensed feelsy garbage
>tons of it
>by the fucking shovel load
Is there a more hypocritical company than the fucking Judases at Telltale Games?
>>334411141
I thought it was hand-drawn?
Pic related.
>>334400424
Here's your answer, OP: http://web.archive.org/web/20160324125405/http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/77.html
>>334411476
Sorry I meant to say the character models.
For some reason I think they're mediocre.
>>334410879
Do it dude
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbWZjfLO2Z0
>>334411620
They kind of are, but I think they are vastly better than the full 3D shit of the previous 2 games imo.
>>334407580
They probably never will.
Pirates of the Caribbean started out as a monkey island movie
>>334408104
>>334411707
3 is GOAT
>>334400424
the average gamer is way too fucking stupid to deal with these games
look at the walking dead, it barely even counts as a fucking video game, you make a menu choice every once in a while and that's it.
RIP the lucasarts era of point and clicks.
>>334400424
They started making real games.
Beat point n click game in a long time.
>>334413198
spooky
>>334413198
Fran Bow is amazing
>>334413490
It's not spooky just to be spooky, the dialog is really compelling and the alternate reality theme is really fun. The environments are so great.
>>334400424
Died out due to lack of multiplayer support.
They turned into walking simulators.
>>334413579
Glad you think so it's quite unique and very morbid at times.
>>334411851
goat
The bubble died again.
Mr Shitface failed you
>>334402368
I like you
try this, it's on gog and the lore is great. The voice acting is a little cringy in english but if you know french it's a lot better.
>>334413819
Double Fine Adventure was pretty shit though. As as a fan of P&C adventures I did not want to play more than 15 minutes of it.The documentary is great and was worth the money
>>334400424
Shu Takumi made a step forward and no one was talented enough to follow.
>>334412236
DON'T GO PUTTING YOUR LIPS ON EVERYTHING
Dropsy was the last good p'n'c I played but it still seemed stale. Core mechanics are simply outdated no matter how nice art/music gets.
Kentucky Route Zero is kinda nice to play late at night
>>334414893
So painfully pretentious. It's amazing that numales can't even design simplistic 'use this or that item' puzzles.
>>334408104
This game is awesome. Great characters, great voice acting, actually mature and not in the juvenile sense.
The puzzles are great too, even though they are not too hard. One reason is probably because they are set in very limited environments of 3 screens or so tops, and you don't need to cruise over the entire city for items or puzzles to get more items.
>>334403309
That's not evolution in the same way a man who gets paralyzed doesn't "evolve" into a man with a wheelchair.
>>334411851
Resonance I never could get into because I never found a way to delete topics from your short term memory and because I was overwhelmed by controlling four characters at once.
>>334413579
>>334413198
>first half is 2spooky
>second half is The Never Ending Story with some spook
>>334415613
I hear you, still haven't finished the game because of this.
>>334400424
Technology allowed developers to create more entertaining genres and people stopped playing them. They still exist though.
The Samaritian Paradox is pretty good.
It is not as polished as Wadjet Eye Games' , but I think that adds to the charm for me.
Give it a shot, even though Yahtzee can't write. At least he tried something to do with the gameplay.
Is Gabriel Knight 3 good? I can't play two because I can't get used to FMV adventures.
Heroine's Quest was fun. And it isfree
>>334416732
my nigga
>>334416685
It's very dated it terms of grafix, but if you can get past that then you won't regret it.
Prepare your anus for some bullshit puzzles though.
>>334417587
I think the graphix is only dated if the art design is bad.
>>334407757
Does this run on SCUMM?
>>334417928
Problem with GK3 is that the game is from that retarded era when 3d games where just starting to become a thing, so the game aged like used up hooker.
>>334418882
Again, I disagree in a sense that it is not an excuse. Especially since I still think that low poly 3D games (disregarding GK 3) are the pinnacle of vidya art direction.
