The fuck are you talking about? X-2 is one of the most open Final Fantasy games. You get the airship right at the beginning and can go anywhere you want and you can do the missions in each chapter in pretty much any order you want.

Can't defend Crisis Core but VIII is fantastic. Honestly 4, 5 and 8 are the only ones worth a damn in my opinion and as much as I wanted to like X-2 it had some of the worst design choices (especially in regards to level design) and absolutely the worst mini-games (especially in terms of their importance to the game) I have ever seen. I felt like the game was trying to piss me off while I was wrestling against it trying to simply enjoy the wonderful combat.

It provided a good look at a world recovering from 1000 years of being terrorized by a giant city destroying monster and being controlled by a corrupt church. So far the dress switching is mostly a pointless gimmick as the majority of classes are useless shit, due to the usual retarded FF enemy balance - where regular monsters are easy to just auto attack, and bosses are immune to 90% of your fancy skills so you just end up with dps + healer combination.
It's basically a matter of pinpointing the one or two overpowered abilities and using the classes just for those.
