Did anyone else think this was an amazing game when it came out? Or is nostalgia factoring in how I remember GvGing in my teens...

It was amazing, OP.
It was a unique experience at it's time and did a number of cool things. In particular, I really liked how you needed to capture elite skills from bosses. It made going out and capturing those elite skills an adventure in of itself.

I think the expansions were great as well.
Anet did everything they could to ruin it though.
