I'm not a fan of 2.5D platformers. Fixed camera angles and tileset-esque level design puts me to sleep.
You may as well just use sprites if you're going to go through so much effort to ape a 2D platformer.
If you want a good platformer, play Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse with Garterbelt & Knuckles.

Castle of Illusion and Kirby 64 are prime examples of how a 2.5D platformer should be: The levels look like you're in a 3D world, but you just happen to be moving in only two directions.
