I really wish I could explain to people how vanilla was different. I mean, it's a confluence of reasons, some design-wise, some based on where I was in my life, some based on the culture of video games at the time.

But it was different, and a lot of it has nothing to do with changes to the game; however, I feel Blizz could have retained a lot of what made vanilla special through their design choices
>>
>>334381025

Vanilla WoW was unnecessarily complex garbage.

>Zones didn't lead into each other
>Zones in the 40s and 50s didn't even last a full level, forcing you to grind
>No cross-realm BGs
>No Arenas
>40-man raiding forced you to not only wrangle 39 other people, but also backups in case that small workforce of a group had any people who couldn't show up on raid night
>Elite mobs in certain areas means you can't quest on your own
>Talents were boring and you just looked up a guide on where to put points
>Spell ranks were unintuitive
>>
>those days spent sitting on the toilet flipping through each page
>>
>>334380798
But nost literally proved that wasn't the case.

I mean you can have a game where a mana bar is important, that there are professsions, that gather materiasl that craft mana potions because the potion means the difference between 8 heals and 10 heals in a dungeon.

Or you can scrap all that, and make it so faceroll that there might as well not be a mana bar, or mana potions in the game.

One of these is good game design where everything is useful and has it's place.

The other is garbage.
>>
>>334381246
I'd rather have complex garbage over modern WoW

They practically ripped the game to shreds to appeal to the most casual audience possible. Also any semblance of "roleplaying" got taken out back and shot by Activison

>>
>>334381246

And yet in vanilla I

>met people from all over the world because I saw them regularly in realm
>had in jokes with others based on events that happened on the server
>Called out ninjas in raids/dungeons (people had actual reputations)
>Quested with others and started guilds with them not because they were good at the game, but because I actually liked them
>helped problem solve with others
>learned to be patient in raids and got to goof around with 39 other people
>always had that one guy that "didn't have a mic"
>actually explored with friends "Hey, I wonder if we can get up there..."

It was just different, a different mentality from the devs and players.

Yeah I spent around 12 hours every level of pure grinding from like 50s to 60s. When some guides in started saying that you could level faster doing quests later I didn't even believe it. That seem so silly now, where you'll level so fast that you won't be close to doing all the quests.

it never bothered me, desu. they could've made PvP gearing a bit easier, to make the two somewhat equal. gating weapons behind HWL/GM was a slap to the face for anyone that decided to only PvP, but I do understand their reasoning for it.

I do feel the new system is way better in how it gives PvPers gear suitable enough for raiding, while allowing them the advantage against people wearing PvE gear.

If by meet you mean see them afk-rotations through dungeons and might as well be bots.

>there's still people so there's still in-jokes
No jokes if no one talks. Chat has declined SIGNIFICANTLY since vanilla. Surely you can't deny this.

>ninjaing and the calling out of it didn't go away
Yes it did. There's no accountability since cross realm. The whole idea of 'server reputation' disappeared.

>there's still guilds
There are. But most of the big guilds left WoW. Most of the family type guilds are long gone.
There are remnants of guilds calling it quits and leaving all at once all over the internet citing game changes.

>there's still zone chat, people actually do something about questing areas getting skullfucked by a high level player
Again, the quantity is nowhere NEAR similar. There's simply no reason for zone chat. Some guy is ganking you? Just queue for LFD you dumb fuck. "But I need to finish this quest to get this item upgrade"... lmao youl'l out-level the item upgrade from the EXP you get just doing the quest. Just dungeon lmao.

>you can still raid
Yes. We can. With 40 People. No. we can't. "Oh but it was SOOO hard to get 39 people together, it was a nightmare".... Yeah we think wel'l like it. We WILL like it, and we DID like it on Nost. Gtfo with your presumptions on what people will find fun and not fun.

>there's still people without mics
His comment is not about people without mics, it's about quirky things about actual people that you learned from being in proximity and required communication with them. Uh oh, the healer went afk claiming that his uncle bought a new puppy. We can't just kick him and re-queue like in modern WoW. Let's shoot the shit, You ever tried meth? Oh shit no way. etc.

Yes it is.

Because one means PVP is just unbalanced.

The other takes a knife to the veins of what WoW was meant to be. It was meant to be a living breathing world that was a whole.

The REASON the whole thing is hemmoraging subs isn't because of imbalanced PVP. It's hemmoraging because they killed the world and replaced it with 'instances of Warcraft'.

I guess I'm very late to the party. I started WoW for the first time yesterday and immediately noticed how almost all other MMOs took influence. There seems to be a shadow of sadness though, even on high pop servers everything feels dead and empty. Speckles of once-was rememberance of all the ads and screenshots in magazines. Hearing the stories of how great everything was, all the communication, the experience. Now, with the right kind of eyes, you can almost see the high-water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.
>>
>>334381616
It's also bred a particularly lazy type of player. My friends and I have discussed the merits of various MMOs recently, and some of them went near-autistic in despising games with a lot of abilities and options as bad design, having taken on an iPod-simple view of everything. They expect to have one button to do all their relevant whatever, with no variation or snap decision making required.
>>

Well, in a roundabout way killing NPCs would also impact lowbies. Imagine a high level constantly camping an important NPC for lowbie quests or the flight master.

I dont have as much time to play now as I did when I was 15, but with that being said I'd be 100% ok with not being as good or getting as much as someone who dedicates way more time than I do. Like, I can still make a casual guild's raid schedule, but why should I (now a casual player), get as much reward as a hardcore player?

The answer is simple, I shouldn't, and if you think you should get more for playing less, because you're "grown up", you're what's wrong with video games. If I was, say, playing tbc now, I wouldn't expect to be raid ready in a week, or doing ZA bear runs right off the hop, I'd expect a slow build-up to that shit because I cant dedicate that much time to the game.
>>
Thanks OP. I think I remember you from other threads. You got a fuckhuge collecyion of booze if I remember. I just drink swill but i'm a barely functioning alcoholic.

I hated Vanilla. Not because it was bad. Because it caused me to waste WEEKS on it. STV nearly ruined my life with how often I would get ganked trying to level as arguably one of the worst specs. Still, I made it to 60, then 70. I'll admit I liked BC more for what it did for my class and spec but god do I miss the massive amount of abilities all classes had. It may have been 'complex' but good god did it have variety. Do they even have farsight anymore? Or Div Sac? Can pallies still super bubble not allowing for attacks?

Nah, the time for that has sadly gone.

Both "gaming" and the internet and the respective cultures have changed too much for that to ever truly happen again. There totally are casuals running around with 730-740ilvl gear with models that look identical to mythic shit, which is just the exact same encounter as normal just with damage/health turned up. I was 10/10 m brf, and quit shortly after the hfc/tanaan patch, and there really wasn't anywhere close to as much satisfaction in doing that as there was when I was playing 10 years ago. Boss kills actually used to mean something. You dont need to farm as many consumables, or world buffs, or boss-specific items, or resist gear, mechanics are way more forgiving, every class can more or less do everything, and the designers basically just said "fuck it, good enough" in regards to basically every aspect of the game (one big example being the gear, which looks almost identical no matter how good it is)

I was thinking about this the other day actually. We wont even be able to convey to our children (ok lets get realistic, our nephews/nieces) about awesome it was. Like how will we even be able to explain the whole gravity that was the internet and WoW-culture in 2004-2010ish (the end date is pretty debatable)? It was a cultural phenomena the likes of which has never been seen, or will never be seen again, and unless you were there, I dont know how you could ever really appreciate it.

Reminder that WoW was the most basic, normie, brainless shit that every neckbeard played when it came out
>>
>>334389560
the earliest versions of the game were basically just slightly rescripted/reskinned WC3 that multiple people could join at the same time. The progression from alpa to release is astronomical.
>>
>>334389957
It wasn't really normie at all, as in people thought you were a fucking loser for playing it. And it wasn't until people started hitting 60 that they released that it wasn't as casual as a lot of the purists/hardcores were saying. Then after about 9 months they all started jumping ship from their other respective games (EQ, lineage, etc)

>Class quests
Still don't know why they by and large stopped doing these.
Getting an ability through a quest makes it feel kind of special. It feels like you earned it. Like you had to go through a trial and in doing so your character is stronger and wiser - and that makes you feel like you've truly advanced your class, more so than gaining a level or a new piece of gear does.
>>
>>334390717
>Still don't know why they by and large stopped doing these.
A class quest means content exclusive to 1/10th of the playerbase AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO AND GET EVERYTHING!!!!

Agreed. The reason why Druid was my favourite class was because they not only had cool class quests where you spoke to spirit animals but they also had their own personal zone - this peaceful, green glade (complete with Keeper of the Grove) hidden away in northern Kalimdor. It not only helped the class feel unique but it helped tie druids from different factions together.

It was cut off from the outside world by a tunnel of high-level furbolgs. One of my favourite memories was trying to stealth through when I gained Cat Form. I kept getting closer and closer to the other side until I got to level ~40 or something.
>>
>>334381246
>Zones didn't lead into each other
Every starting zone led to the next zone, which then led to another. Even after that, breadcrumb quests were very common.

>Zones in the 40s and 50s didn't even last a full level, forcing you to grind
Tanaris, Feralas, Searing Gorge, Un'Goro easily gave you 1-2 levels. There were some zones that didn't have as many quests (Azshara, Dustwallow, for example), but they weren't the majority. The only problem was that you'd often have to revisit zones because the levels of the quests could vary a lot.

>No cross-realm BGs
This was a good thing.

>and you just looked up a guide on where to put points
Not much different from now.

>Spell ranks were unintuitive
How?
